COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes that it undergoes. Chemistry I focuses on the properties and reactions of matter with emphasis on real-world applications. Topics of concentration include scientific measurements, symbolic representation, properties and structure of matter, chemical reactions, and relationships between energy and matter. These concepts are developed through inquiry-based labs, demonstrations, problem solving, and other interactive activities.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

❖ Be able to understand measurements and conversions

❖ Be able to identify, understand, and apply key concepts

❖ Have a basic understanding of elements, atoms, compounds, and solutions

❖ Be able to work reaction problems and understand mechanisms of reactions

▪ Students are expected to complete all assigned work and to actively participate.

▪ Makeup of missed labs will be scheduled to accommodate all students at one time.

▪ Student is responsible for making up classroom work within 3 days of returning to school.

2. Tardiness

▪ Students not in their seats WHEN THE BELL RINGS will be counted as tardy.

3. Preparation

▪ Students must bring all required materials to class and be ready to work when the bell rings.

4. Lab Exercises

▪ Safety is paramount. Students will wear an apron and goggles when directed. Horseplay WILL NOT be tolerated.

5. End of class

Homework – NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. DON’T EVEN ASK! THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS!

Major Tests

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR

• When you enter the class, you should be in your seat before the tardy bell rings. All "business" (that includes buying/selling candy) should be handled before the tardy bell. When the bell rings, student should be ready to begin class.

• You may leave your seat only when you are given permission by me to do so. There will be no sitting on desk-tops or tables.

• You should stay in your seat or assigned location until the end-of-class bell rings. You are not to congregate at the door at the end of class.

• You should have all necessary materials with you each day. You will not be allowed to return to your lockers.

• You should not talk (without permission) or cause disruptions in class.

• Talking is expressly prohibited during tests or while I am talking. At other times, when working on text assignments or worksheets or group projects, whispering to a close neighbor about class work is usually permissible ... especially if you are helping someone (and that doesn't mean just giving them answers).

• Students may work on class work from other subjects or read outside material only after all work for my class has been completed to my satisfaction.

• There will be no card playing in class. There will be no radios, disc or tape players in class.

• Violation of class and/or school rules will result in disciplinary action. Written work will be assigned for minor infractions. Major infractions will result in a parental conference and/or a trip to the office.

• There will be no writing on desks, stools, walls, etc. Any student partaking in such action will be required to clean the defaced item and may be referred to the office for vandalism.

• Students will not be allowed to leave class to go to their lockers or to the rest rooms. If the student has a medical condition that requires special consideration, the student will be excused if a note from a family physician is on file in my records.

• All rules in your student handbook will apply in this class.

ABSENCES / MAKE-UP WORK

• Students are responsible for making up material covered if they are absent. It is the student's job to find out what was missed. Missed notes should be obtained from a classmate.

• Students need to bring a valid excuse within 3 days of their return in order to be eligible to do any make-up work. With a valid excuse, you will have 3 class days after returning to school in which to make up tests. After 3 days, you will receive an F on any tests that are not made up (even if you had an excuse).

• Since test dates will be given in advance, students who are absent the day before a test will be expected to take the test if they return to school on the test date. If you find yourself at home without study materials, call a classmate to assist you in getting the information.

Classroom Discipline Plan:

• Classroom Rules

• Be prepared for class.

• Be courteous to fellow classmates, teacher, and visitors.

• Be attentive and on task.

• Respect others property and bodies.

• Consequences:

• 1st Offense = Warning

• Name on board

• 2nd Offense = Final Warning

• Check by name

• 3rd Offense = Classroom Detention & Letter to Parent

• 2nd check by name

• 4th Offense = Student-Parent-Teacher Conference

• 3rd Check by name

• All future Offenses = Referral to Office

• Rewards for Good Behavior

• Students with exemplary behavior will receive rewards such as the “star award” which is a star they write their name on to place on the wall for that six weeks.

• Students may also earn good behavior homework passes when they receive five stars. These homework passes can be used to substitute a homework assignment or cashed in at the end of the six weeks for ten bonus points.
