Ceramics professor JoAnn Schnabel serves on the Board of Directors for Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts and was a Discussion Leader for the Annual Conference of the National Council for Education in the Ceramic Arts.Photography professor Noah Doely had a solo exhibition of his work at the San Diego Museum of Art.Drawing professor Mary Frisbee Johnson exhibited her work at Museo Franz Mayer in Mexico City and the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft.Graphic Design professor Roy Behrens Delivered a major keynote address titled "Khaki to Khaki (Dust to Dust): The Ubiquity of Camouflage in Human Experience" (in August 2013) at an international conference on Camouflage Cultures at the Sydney College of the Art, Sydney Australia and spoke in Washington DC at an opening and symposium for an exhibition sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution, titled The Origins of Camouflage: The Extraordinary Life and Work of Abbott Handerson Thayer (March 2014).Printmaking professors Aaron Wilson and Tim Dooley exhibited their collaborative work at the Des Moines Art Center and The Front in New Orleans. They were also visiting artists at Vanderbilt University and the University of Minnesota. Graphic Design professor Phil Fass has published work in Graphic Design USA: In House Design Annual for the past three years.Department Head Jeffery Byrd published Forever Ephemeral: John Cage’s ASLSP in Performance Research, Vol. 17, No. 5 and presented work at the Island Gallery in Bristol, England; ArcadeCardiff in Wales; Mobius in Boston; and the Dimanche Rouge Festival in Helsinki, Finland. BIOLOGYThe Department of Biology received almost $160,000 from Carver Charitable Trust to purchase microscopes and laboratory specimens and models (Enhance the teaching of General Biology: Organismal Diversity Lab, Entomology, Developmental Plant Anatomy, Plant Diversity and Evolution, and Plant Systematics). The Department has received nearly one million dollars in funding from the Carver Trust over the past four years for classroom and laboratory teaching enhancement.Jeff Tamplin received federal grant funding ($60,000) from the U.S. Fisheries and Wildlife Service. This will allow the study of seasonal habitat usage, home range size and population structure of North American Wood turtles. “Upper Midwest Riverine Turtle Habitat Improvement”. This funding helps to support graduate students.Kenneth Elgersma received a $49,960 grant from the University of Michigan Water Center to collaborate on an effort with University of Michigan researchers to determine which land management practices are most effective at combating non-native invasive plants in wetlands in the midwest.? Dr. Elgersma is also using this project as an opportunity to involve UNI undergraduates in ecological research.Kenneth Elgersma received a $49,990 matching grant from the Li-Cor Environmental Education Fund to purchase state-of-the-art carbon-monitoring system for measuring photosynthesis and respiration.? This grant will improve undergraduate education by exposing students to this equipment as part of their regular coursework in several classes.Carl Thurman received a Board of Regents, State of Iowa Award for Faculty Excellence.Jeff Tamplin received the 2013 College of Humanities, Arts, and Sciences Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence in Departmental Programs.Mary McDade received the University of Northern Iowa Beta Beta Beta teaching award.Mark Myers received a Fulbright Fellowship in the U.S. Scholar Program to teach and conduct research in Colombia during the spring 2014.Julie Kang was an invited speaker and guest lecturer at Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS, Canada.Angela Wrage, a Biology undergraduate student, under the supervision of Mark Sherrard was invited to present the poster of her research work at Research on the Hill, Washington D.C. Angela was the only student from an Iowa Institution of Higher Learning who was invited to attend.A total of six Biology undergraduate students have been invited to present their research work at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research at Lexington, Kentucky. They will be accompanied by Carl Thurman and Darrell Wiens.A large number of our students are now pursuing advanced professional and graduate degrees at well-respected programs within and beyond Iowa. Students are gaining acceptance into programs at Harvard, University of Pittsburgh Medical School, University of Auckland in New Zealand, University of California – Santa Barbara, University of Minnesota Medical School, Southern Illinois Medical School, Duke University Physical Therapy Program, etc.CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRYThe University of Northern Iowa chapter of the American Chemical Society Student Affiliates has been selected by the national organization as an Outstanding ACS Student Chapter for the past two years. This award is recognized and presented to a few selected groups from across the country at the Spring American Chemical Society meeting. To receive this level of recognition two years in a row is very high praise for the types of activities held by the students and their continued effort to send several students each year to the national meeting to present their research.The quality of our program is also recognized by our success in obtaining funding through grants and contracts. For example, in just the past two years our Department has been awarded nearly 25 newly funded grants totaling over $580,000. We have also just recently received a $150,000 award for instrumentation to update our quantitative analysis course. Hamzehee received the award at the 2013 ICA conference in Des Moines.Donna Uhlenhopp, Office Coordinator for the Department of Communication Studies, was selected as one of the 2013 Regents Staff Excellence Award recipients. The award is the highest recognition for staff at UNI and Iowa's other Regents munication Studies MA graduate Katelyn Santy won the 2014 Outstanding Master's Thesis Award from the University of Northern Iowa Graduate College.The UNI Speech Team finished ranked #10 in the nation in 2012 and 2013 at the American Forensic Association National Individual Events Tournament (AFA-NIET). Harrison Postler, senior communication studies major, was the national champion in impromptu speaking.The UNI debate team of Abbie Shew and Zach Simonson were 5-3 in preliminary rounds, defeating teams from Kansas and West Virginia, at the 2013 CEDA Nationals, the largest national debate tournament in policy debate. Three Electronic Media Students won ADDY awards at the 2014 American Advertising Federation - Cedar Valley regional awards competition in February at the Waterloo Center for the Arts.The UNI Interactive Digital Studies program's animated web video won a silver award at the 2014 American Advertising Federation - Cedar Valley regional awards competitionAlumnus and Adjunct Instructor Eric Braley Releases "Iowa Icons: Dan Gable" Documentary. The DVD is the product of a one-on-one interview with Gable, conducted by Eric Braley, owner of Around the Corner Productions.? Braley earned video production degrees -- and teaches courses on the subject – at UNI's Department of Communication Studies.Dussadee Oeawpanich, a 2002 graduate of the Communication Studies masters of arts program and native of Thailand, was one of 12 finalists in the first season of?The Apprentice Asia. These sessions, advertised throughout the Cedar Valley, are a means for identifying key areas of need among the Spanish-speaking population locally. Spanish students at UNI, along with Dr. Cooley, meet with groups and also collect feedback from drop boxes located in strategic areas. Then they conduct research to identify area service organizations, businesses, or government agencies that meet these needs, drafting Spanish language materials to inform people of how to contact these organizations.Spanish MAMA Spanish student Nicholas Chizek won an award for his presentation at the Graduate College Symposium in 2013.TESOL, TESOL Teaching, and TESOL Spanish BA Student Annette Putnam is presenting at the “Research at the Capitol” event this spring.Student Christina Goering is presenting her work this semester at the American Association of Applied Linguistics Conference. She delivered a webinar on the topic of English Listening Skills that was attended by more than 1,000 teachers.TESOL and TESOL Spanish MAStudent Kate Hein is presenting her paper on Critical Thinking Tasks and Second Language Vocabulary Learning at the TESOL and Applied Linguistics Graduate Student Conference in Cullowhee, NC. She is also presenting her results in a poster presentation on Collaborative Strategic Reading as Sheltered instruction. While teaching at UNI, current faculty musicians have performed and presented in more than 30 countries and 38 states of the United States. This faculty travel has taken them to prestigious events/venues throughout the world. More than 50% of the music teachers currently teaching in the state of Iowa are graduates of the UNI School of Music. The program has a 100% placement rate for placing teachers in schools.The UNI Panther Marching Band is the largest in the history of the ensemble at 280 members. The group, under the direction of Dr. Danny Galyen, has been invited by the Lord Mayer of London to travel overseas to perform in the London New Years Day Parade in 2015. Under the direction of Dr. Rebecca Burkhardt, the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra, , and several UNI faculty members received an invitation to tour Brazil to perform and share in cultural exchanges with students and conductors in Caxias do Sul and Porto Alegre. The group visited Brazil March 14-24, 2014, with a brief stop in Panama City where the group participated in a boat tour of the Panama Canal. The UNI Varsity Men’s Glee Club, under the direction of Dr. John Wiles, has been invited to tour Spain to perform and share in cultural exchanges with students and conductors. The group will travel in May 2014 after the conclusion of classes and finals. Dr. Rebecca Burkhardt, conductor and Dr. Amanda McCandless, clarinet, both faculty in the UNI School of Music, performed with the Orquestra Sinf?nica da Universidade de Caxias do Sul, Brazil, for their fifth season subscription concert on August 8, 2013. The program included Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A with Dr. McCandless as soloist, Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony, Overture in the Italian Style, Schubert and Darius Milhaud’s orchestration of his Saudades do Brasil. Dr. McCandless also gave a masterclass for clarinet students in the Caxias and Porto Alegre area. Both she and Dr. Burkhardt consulted with UCS faculty about the Northern Iowa Symphony tour to that area in March 2014 and about future student exchanges in several study areas including Music Education and Brazilian folk music.Dr. Angeleita Floyd participated in the National Flute Associations 41st Annual Convention held in New Orleans, LA, August 8th through 11th, along with 14 of her current UNI flute students. At the Gala Awards Celebration, held on Saturday, August 10, Angeleita Floyd was officially presented the NFA's Distinguished Service Award for her contributions and service to the organization over the past twenty-five years. Alumnus Mark Walters will sing the title role of Don Giovanni wit Seattle Opera Company this spring.Samantha Kantak (B.M. Voice Performance, UNI; and pursuing a M.M. in Voice Performance, UNI) will be pursuing a doctoral degree in Voice Performance and Pedagogy at the University of North Texas in the fall. She was nominated by the Division of Vocal Studies and selected by a university-wide faculty committee to be one of a handful of students university-wide to receive the University of North Texas’ prestigious Robert B. Toulouse Fellowship.Rhys Talbot, senior BM in Vocal Performance, was chosen to perform in the Schwabacher Dubut Recitals in San Francisco in February, 2014. Recognition of Students2013 Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)@NSTA Curator Program (Marcia Powell, MA Science Education Alumni)TECHNOLOGYThe Metal Casting option of the Technology Manufacturing Program was awarded a full reaccreditation by the prestigious Foundry Education Foundation (FEF).The Graphic Technologies Program completed a self-study report and an on-campus visitation by the ACCGC accreditation team early March. The visit went very well and we expect full accreditation for the program.The ATMAE (Association for Technology. Management and Applied Engineering) self-study report was completed. The accrediting team on-campus visit is scheduled for April 6, 7 and 8, 2014. Four programs are expected to be re-accredited for six more years. The programs are: Construction Management, Graphic Technologies, Technology Management and Manufacturing Technology (including options in Advanced Manufacturing, Design, and Metal Casting). These four programs have been accredited since 1994.The Construction Management Program applied for accreditation by ACCE and is in candidate status now. The full process should be completed and accreditation realized in 3-5 years.The Metal Casting Center was awarded $1.4million and purchased a 3-D Printer which is now housed at Cedar Valley TechWorks. The newly acquired printer is the largest of its kind and the only one in North America. This will facilitate UNI’s Partnership in the new effort of the Advanced Manufacturing Centers initiatives by President Obama.Two faculty, Dr. Scott Giese and Dr. Douglas Hotek, were promoted to the rank of full professor.Industrial projects from Caterpillar and Grupo Curimbaba totaling over $100,000 were awardedDr. Giese received AFS Division 4 recognition for Best Presentation and received award for Best PaperDr. Giese, Gerard Thiel, and Sairam Ravi are presenting three papers at the 71st World Foundry ConferenceTHEATREThe department has just received accreditation through the National Association of Schools of Theatre.WOMEN’S AND GENDER STUDIESWe have donors who are committed to the WGS program.
