As a consequence, students should take SSE 4333 in the first Fall semester after being admitted to the program in order to graduate in three additional semesters.Criminal Background check (fingerprinting) must be completed with the appropriate district PRIOR to starting any field experience course (currently SSE 4334 and SSE 4335). Please contact Jordan Gravlee at jgravlee@usf.edu for questions regarding this. Practicum:SSE 4333 (Middle School Methods) is a prerequisite for SSE 4335 (Practicum). Ideally students will complete SSE 4600 and 4334 prior to Practicum as well, but they can be taken concurrently with Practicum to facilitate timely degree progress.Proof of having passed the appropriate county’s criminal background check is required to register for Practicum and is verified before the first class meeting of 4334 and SSE 4335. Practicum placements are primarily in Hillsborough County. SSE 4335 Teaching Social Science Themes: Students must contact the instructor of SSE 4335 while in SSE 4333 to request a placement (on a space available basis) for a different county and will be required to obtain the criminal background for that county (if not already completed) at his or her own expense if approved. Students without the required criminal background check will be required to drop the course. Students spend approximately one full day each week under the direction of a supervising teacher in an assigned middle or high school observing and teaching.SSE 4334: Secondary School Methods: Students must contact the instructor prior to enrolment in SSE 4334 to request a placement (on a space available basis) for a different county and will be required to obtain the criminal background for that county (if not already completed) at his or her own expense if approved. Students without the required criminal background check will be required to drop the course. You will be observing in one middle school and one high school. Then you will work directly with secondary school students under the direction of a supervising teacher. We recommend that you take ESE 4322 (Classroom Management) before or with your Practicum course, SSE 4335. You must have 60 or more earned credits in order to register for EDF 3604. SSE 4333 (Middle School Methods) and SSE 4600 (Reading in Social Science) are typically online courses, however both have a set time each week when you must be available online to take a quiz. Both also have a required on-campus orientation day at the beginning of the term.EDF 4430 should not be taken until you have completed at least one social studies teaching methods course (SSE 4333, SSE 4600 or 4334). You may also need to get a permit for EDF 4430. The contact information for the permit will be in the section information in Schedule Planner.Final internship: (See ) Official passing scores on all four sections of the General Knowledge Test (GKT) must be submitted to Student Academic Services prior to internship (SSE 4940).SSE 4936 (Senior Seminar) and SSE 4940 (Internship) must be taken together. Students must register for both at the same time in Schedule Planner. You apply for your final internship two terms before your final internship term (i.e. apply in spring for the coming fall or in summer for the coming spring). Our college recommends that you do not take any other courses during your final internship term given the time constraints of the internship and senior seminar requirements. If you need to take any additional courses during or after the final internship term, you must note them on your internship application and submit a College of Education Petition to Student Academic Services (EDU 106) requesting special permission to register for the additional course. This petition must be approved by your Academic Advisor, the Social Science Education program, and the Clinical Education Coordinator and will only be considered for students with excellent GPAs and excellent scores in their practicum experience.Graduation requirements:You must apply for graduation through OASIS. Note that this is separate from registering for Commencement. You must complete all courses within five years. You must complete all upper-level College of Education courses with a C- grade or higher in each. You must have at least a 2.5 overall GPA, as well as at least a 2.5 GPA in your Education Professional Core and Teaching Specialization courses to graduate. You must pass both the FTCE Professional Education Test and the Social Science 6 – 12 Subject Area Exam to graduate. We highly recommended that you take both exams prior to the start of final internship. ................
