1. Executive Director’s Reflection *

While the winter has weighed on us and seemed to have lingered way beyond its welcome, the Lenten season, like so many others, seems to move quickly. My challenge is always staying in the moment of the Lenten journey and allowing God to touch and transform me in some way. Staying thirsty and hungry for God’s presence so often can be lost in the crammed and fast-paced days. Each Lent some prayer helps me and becomes a type of mantra for me. This year’s is a prayer by Joyce Rupp that was shared with me right at the beginning of Lent by Cindy Bridges, who had it forwarded to her by another friend. Don’t you so appreciate those who want to feed your spiritual hunger? I have used this prayer on most of our NACC network calls during this Lent so some of you will have heard it…

Marilyn Bucheri is often asked, “How do you go into such horrific situations?” But in responding to attacks such as the Newtown school shootings and the Boston Marathon bombing, she knew that she carried the strength of others with her. To read her reflection in the March/April Vision, click here.

5. Continuing the healing ministry: Reflections from a Retired Chaplain *

This begins a new feature in NACC Now, “Continuing the Healing Ministry,” which will provide a forum whereby our retired members can provide an update on what they’re doing and on all the ways they continue to minister. This week’s piece is by Jane Smith:

I came to chaplaincy relatively late in life. I raised 7 children, went back to school for a Masters in Pastoral Ministry when the youngest of our brood was in kindergarten, then worked for 6 years in a Catholic Education for Social Justice organization for 6 years, before venturing into CPE, certification in NACC in 1992 ,and then my first chaplain position. I earned a DMin degree in 1998, then accepted a position as Director of Mission Effectiveness and Spiritual Care at a state long-term forensic psychiatric facility, where I worked happily for 11 more years.

New in the meditation room this year is the Spirit Walk, a self-guided reflection inviting you to consider your role in compassionate leadership from four contexts: from a renewed spirit, in new settings, with diverse partners, and through innovative services. For those looking to receive further continuing education hours before the conference, the task force is pleased to offer a selection of five pre-conference workshops. These four-hour workshops are offered in the morning on Saturday, May 17, prior to the official start of the conference. Don’t spend your morning looking for something to do; spend it with others learning new and exciting things about pastoral care.

Full descriptions for each of the pre-conference workshops can be found in the registration brochure. Additionally, objectives and educational resources for each pre-conference workshop can be found on the NACC website.

Register for a pre-conference workshop for a cost of $75. To be eligible for the $75 rate, registration and payment must be received by April 25, 2014. Registrations for pre-conference workshops will be accepted onsite at the conference for a cost of $80.

13. Night Out in St. Louis - Monday, May 19, 2014

While you are in the beautiful city of St. Louis we hope you will take time to experience a bit of what the city has to offer. The conference planning taskforce has planned two special opportunities for conference participants.

Select one and get a “taste” of St. Louis.

1. Anheuser-Busch Brewery Tour ~ Join fellow conference participants on a tour of the Anheuser-Busch Brewery in the city where the company got its start in 1852

2. St. Louis Trolley Tour ~ Join fellow conference participants on an evening tour of the city of St. Louis from the comfort of a trolley provided by the St. Louis Fun Trolley Tours. This guided driving tour will offer an informed and entertaining look at major St. Louis sites.

For more information on each of the special events and for a registration form, visit the NACC website.

14. As you register, please consider a donation to NACC Scholarship Fund

Please consider a donation to the NACC Scholarship Fund. All donations received help NACC members to attend the NACC National Conference. For those members who have contributed at past conferences through the purchase of Silent Auction items, please know that this year we will not have a Silent Auction. We ask that you consider making a donation directly on the conference registration form (Box E). Every dollar counts; no amount is too small or big. Thank you for your support.

CHAPLAINCY NEWS, EDUCATION, PROFESSIONAL SUPPORTS

15. What are you doing to educate others on spiritual screening? *

As healthcare continues to change, educating physicians and nurses to perform spiritual screening to recognize spiritual distress and other spiritual/emotional issues that might need to be referred to a chaplain is a critical need and skill. Have you and/or your system begun such training? We want to share both resources and practices in training/educating on spiritual screening. Would you be willing to share what you do and be interested in sharing your practice with others? Please contact David Lichter, dlichter@. We plan to convene those interested in learning from one another and helping us share leading practices.

16. April 2nd, U.N. Sanctioned World Autism Day *

Our ministry has us regularly encountering and ministering to individuals and families affected by autism. This Wednesday, April 2nd, is World Autism Awareness Day and April is dedicated to increasing awareness about autism. Shine a blue light that day. Go to for more information.

17. Register today for the first 2014 NACC Webinar, April 10th! *

Next week, Thursday, April 10th, will be the first 2014 webinar with its second session being Thursday, April 24, 2014, Discerning Leadership: Purpose Informs Your Vision, Informs Your Leadership Skills, presented by Bonnie McCulley, D.Min., BCC. It will be a good primer for your attendance to the 2014 Annual Conference, and even more so for your own thinking about you and your present and future leadership. For more details and registration information visit the NACC website.

18. What is a webinar? Why not our usual audio conferences? Can’t I participate by phone? *

Most remote education today is done via a webinar which is an online event, using a computer via the Internet, hosted by an organization and broadcasted to a select group. This way the participants can follow the presenter’s PowerPoint or other visuals as he or she presents. However, please note that NACC members (either by preference or because they do not have access to a computer with Internet) can also still follow the webinar just as they have done the audio conferences, using only their telephone. All participants will be provided the call-in conference line phone number.

19. Register now for the NACC 2014 webinar series *
