The Datastream Dynamic Data Exchange Server enables you …

DSDDE on BUSLAN Workstations (Datastream via Excel)

Datastream provides access to long runs of historical data on stocks, stock indexes, bonds, commodities, exchange rates, interest rates and economic data (IMF, OECD, and individual governments). Through an Excel interface, it is easy to make a request and have the data delivered directly into an Excel spreadsheet. Here are the basic steps:

1) Double Click on the "DSDDE" icon found on the BUSLAN main menu.

2) Pull down the "Datastream" menu bar and click on "Time Series Request".

3) Fill in the form (below) using Datastream codes (a discussion of using the online codes is on the reverse of this sheet) and then click the "Execute" button. The data will drop directly into an Excel spreadsheet.

EX: Find the daily price and market value for Gateway 2000 and Dell Computer stock from

January 1, 1996 to December 31, 1997

Using the Online Codes

The codes used to extract data from Datastream are mnemonics representing the items you're looking for (Dell stock, for example, or dollar/yen exchange rate). Click on the CODE button appearing on the template to look up your code. You may enter multiple codes in a single request. Commas will be automatically inserted to separate codes.

Datatypes: The Datatypes represent the subsets of information available for a particular item or code (for example, market value for an equity code). Available Datatypes are listed when you select "Datatype" from the drop down menu at the top of the screen. Keep in mind that not all datatypes work for every code.

Start/End Dates: Enter dates in mm-dd-yy format. Data availability varies by item. Consult the code lookup screen to find out how far back your data is available. In this case, for example, Dell data goes back to 1988, and the Gateway data starts with 1993.

Frequency: This also varies by item. Most market data is available on a daily basis, while much of the economic data is available monthly or quarterly.

Code Lookup Screen

Choose the Code Type (ex.: "Equities", or "Datatypes"), then begin to type the item you are looking for. Double click on your selection to automatically enter it into the time series request form. If you experience difficulty, enter the 6-digit codes by hand separated by commas.
