Black History Month: 7th Grade English

African American Icons - Spotlight Project

Directions:

You will work with a partner on this project. You will be given time to work in class with your partner. However, you are allowed to work outside of class with your partner if you choose to. Choose an important person in African American History. Between the two of you, your project must answer the following questions about your person.

1. Who is your person? (background/biographical information about the person – where is the person from?, where did they go to school?, what experiences in their early life helped shape who they are? Etc.)

2. What did this person do that makes them an African American Icon?

3. Where did this person accomplish the things that made him or her an important person in African American History?

4. When did this person accomplish the things that he or she did? During which time period in American History?

5. Why did this person decide to do the things he or she did?

6. How did the person accomplish what he or she did?

Options:

1. Conduct an interview with your Black History Month icon. This will require one of you to act as the African American icon and the other to act as the interviewer. You must create a list of questions that will allow your icon to provide the information listed above. You must research your person so that you know how they would have answered the questions. You may create a video of your interview or present in class. You must turn in a written copy of your interview questions and the answers your icon would have provided.

2. Create a powerpoint presentation about your person. If you choose this option you must create a slide for each of the items listed above (who, what, where, when, why, how). You must also find a video (through discovery streaming or other library video sources) that describes why your person is important to Black History. Each slide must also include a picture. You should turn in a printed out version of your powerpoint presentation when you present.

Research Requirements:

Both options will require you to research your topic. You must use at least one PHYSICAL BOOK from the library and at least one other source from the reliable sources list posted on the library website. You may use other reliable internet/digital sources for additional information outside of your two required sources. You must create a bibliography in MLA format crediting your sources used. Your bibliography must be turned in with your project.
