2771775-42862500A Brief History of CanadaTeacher’s NotesThe reading text is adapted from Being Canadian, 3rd Edition by Judy Cameron and Tracey Derwing. The text below can be used in several ways:Each student could be given one strip. After reading and looking up new words, students mingle and share the information on the slip. The text is adapted to do as an information gap activity. In groups, students could read the strips and put them in order. Students write down new vocabulary (see bolded words) in their notebooks. After the strips are returned the teacher, students try to complete the cloze exercise. Students read the text. Groups are assigned to write comprehension questions for parts of the text. Students write the questions on the board and class goes over questions, checking first for correct question formation and then to answer the question.Read the text and do a jeopardy-style game with comprehension check/vocabulary questions of varying complexity and worth more points. Students read the text and make a visual representation (perhaps a timeline with pictures) to show the historical events. Using the visual clues, students practice retelling the history to each other. After reading the summary, follow up by reading the full detailed text in Being Canadian, 3rd Edition.2771775-42862500A Brief History of CanadaThe first people to come to Canada were the Aboriginal Canadians.Scientists think that the Native people (Aboriginals) came to Canada about 30,000 years ago. They lived by hunting and fishing. Some First Nations people who lived in central and eastern Canada were farmers. In 1497, John Cabot, an Englishman, sailed from England to Newfoundland. After his first trip, every summer, many English people would sail to Newfoundland to go fishing. Then they would return to England for the winter. In the early 1500s, the French came to Canada. They were the first permanent settlers from Europe. Some of the Native people showed them how to survive. They helped the European settlers grow food and hunt animals. The first French settlers to Canada set up trading posts, and they lived by hunting, farming, and fur trading with the First Nations people. When the Europeans came to Canada, they brought serious diseases such as measles and tuberculosis. Tens of thousands of Native people died. There were many struggles between the French and English for control of Canada. The English and French had a war. In 1763, England won. Once the Europeans gained control of Canada, they forced the Native people off their lands onto small reserves (land for Native use only).2771775-42862500A Brief History of CanadaInstructions: Read the text and fill in the blank. The first people to come to Canada were the _____________ Canadians.Scientists think that the Native people (Aboriginals) came to Canada about ________________ years ago.
