at the “Korea International Women’s Invention Forum 2008”

Distinguished guests,
Distinguished delegates,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today, together with all of you, I am so delighted to be invited to attend the Korea International Women’s Invention Forum in the beautiful and friendly country – Korea.
May I take this opportunity, on behalf of the Vietnam Women’s Union, to extend my sincere thanks to the World Intellectual Property Organization, the Korea Intellectual Property Office, and Korea Women Inventors’ Association for such an innovative idea in organizing this Korea International Women’s Invention Forum and Exposition to get together and promote the dedicated, knowledgeable and talented women, and at the same time, to create an opportunity for exchange, partnership, cooperation and experiences sharing among the Korean women and women from other countries.
On this occasion, I would like to convey my best compliments and wishes to the distinguished guests and delegates. May our Forum and Exposition be successful.

Invention implies the creation of new values or value added, materially and spiritually. It could only be originated from our lives and will serve our lives. With this significance, invention is an important activity, it is the right of everyone, regardless of men or women, ages, occupations and education obtainments…For women, despite numerous difficulties and obstacles, the fact has indicated women’s infinite inventive competence, that our exposition today is a typical manifestation. Having visited the Women’s Invention exposition, we are so impressed and highly appreciated the products made by women being displayed. For men, having inventive ideas and making them visible is not easy, but for women, it is more and more difficult.

In Vietnam, thanks to the renovation policy over the last 20 years, our economy has grown continuously, more than 7% per year. In this great achievement, women have made tremendous contributions. Accounting for 50% of the total population and nearly 50% of the labor force, participating in various sectors: economically, socially, culturally, educationally etc…and being facilitated by the Party and the State, the Vietnamese women are able to indicate their hardworking, dynamic and inventive competences in various areas , that has enabled them to make great contributions to the society.
Overcoming the social prejudice on women’s roles and gender labor divisions, women have tried their best to indicate their great potentials, active participation and significant contribution for the development of the country. The businesses run by women account for one fourth in total and most of them are SMEs. They have inherited and developed the fine qualities of the Vietnamese women: dedication, dynamics and creation in the new era of development in Vietnam. Many of them have made valuable inventions in business and in scientific researches…, making great contributions to the socio-economic development of the country. They have provided great employments for our society and kindly given donations to the target groups and communities as well.
In our delegation today, there are two prominent businesswomen, representing Vietnamese entrepreneurs in Vietnam.

As the unique organization, representing all groups of women in Vietnam, with more than 13 million members throughout the country, the Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) has many initiatives and programs to encourage women in invention. The motto “Women are active at study, dynamic and creative at work” is launched by the VWU on nation-wide. We have cooperated in organizing various activities such as: expositions, trade fairs, clubs and associations of businesswomen, study tours, training courses, workshops and forums…to promote women’s greater participation.
To recognize and indicate our high appreciation to the prominent women in various areas, the VWU has conferred the Noble Awards such as: the Vietnam Women Award, the Golden Rose Award, the Kovalepskaia Award and other Merit Certificates to these women. Their achievements have been widely disseminated by the mass media. Over the last 3 years, about 100 outstanding women have received these Awards. These activities have encouraged women continuously to make significant contributions, inventions, and to achieve more and more successes.

In the development of our countries, the international cooperation, especially in invention is very significant. Attending the Korea International Women’s Invention Forum and Exposition today, we all expect women will be strongly facilitated, and given support from the family, community and society to enable them to develop their great potentials and creative competence. We do hope that their achievements and products are highly recognized and expanded oversea. With this in mind, we are committed to strengthen our partnership, networking and cooperation for women’s advancement and for the prosperity of our respective countries, of the region and the world as well.
In this regard, we, the Vietnam Women’s Union and the Korea Women’s Invention Association have signed the Memorandum of Understanding with expected prospects, indicating our strong commitments in supporting women inventors.
We do hope that our friendship, networking and cooperation will be strongly developed among women all over the world.
