The program is currently being redesigned to further reduce smoking in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, based on the University of Canberra review. The Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS) has been providing holistic health to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders for over forty years. POSITION SCOPEWith guidance from the Health Promotion Team Leader, the Health Promotion Project Officer will work as part of the Healthy Lifestyles and Tackling Tobacco Team to implement local health promotion activities with a focus on tackling Indigenous Smoking initiatives. The position is located at the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS) to ensure ongoing community ownership in closing the health gap in the region. This is an Aboriginal identified position. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIESTobacco Cessation ActivitiesDelivery of regional smoking prevention and promote cessation social marketing campaigns and events.Deliver tobacco cessation and prevention education programs within schools and other settings as requested.Deliver smoking cessation and support programs, appropriate to the worker’s qualification level, to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, and refer people to other health programs as appropriate;Work in partnership with the Tackling Indigenous Smoking workforce in the region, and with the broader national network coordinated by the National Coordinator.Undertake a program of ongoing learning and development leading towards a relevant VET qualification at Certificate II (initially as entry level), III or higher.Participate in appropriate training programs and networking opportunities, including national conferences, workshops and seminars.Collect data to assist in the evaluation of the tobacco cessation social marketing campaigns, programs, education and events.Promote and support smoke-free workplace strategies at VAHS and with other partner organisations including but not limited to; Yappera, Fitzroy Stars Football Club, The Aborigines Advancement League and the Collingwood Knights Football Club. Refer clients and Community members to the Aboriginal Quitline services. Exemplify non-smoking and quit smoking behaviours.Health Promotion Develop, implement and evaluate local health promotion activities.Conduct information sessions with individuals, families and other groups such as at schools and community events on:how lifestyle choices can make a difference;how to make and maintain healthier lifestyle choices;what are chronic diseases and how to avoid them andthe reasons why chronic diseases are not inevitable.Encourage, assist, partner on or facilitate community events that promote physical activity and healthy eating.Support people to undertake appropriate physical activity sessions.Support improved eating habits through joint activities with VAHS dietician such as, but not limited to, community store “walk-throughs” to discuss healthy food choices, cooking groups and involvement in community gardens.Refer people for Aboriginal Health Checks.Refer people to existing lifestyle modification and other health programs as appropriate.Refer people with established chronic disease to other health care professionals for clinical advice on their chronic disease. Support the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and projects to achieve the strategic aims of the team, including the Six Week Challenge and Coach Programs. Managing data collection and analysing and evaluating data from all programs, including the Diabetes Vic RTGH (Six Week Challenge) program and the partnerships with sports clubs. Develop and coordinate content for social media, video, and print materials related to projects and health promotion focus areas. Implementation of COACH program lesson plans at Yappera Children Services and Bubup Wilam for Early Years. Coordinate the VAHS Messages on hold answering service promoting VAHS upcoming VAHS events and health messages.3. General DutiesProvide project management support in a range of areas, including strategic communications planning, program development, digital communications, internal agency communications, and stakeholder outreach.Develop and manage projects that contribute to the goals and strategies of the team in line with the objectives of VAHS and overarching funding agreements.Work collaboratively across VAHS to leverage capabilities, talent, and knowledge. To build new and maintain pre-existing partnerships with key stakeholders within the region.To attend camps, programs, and other informal settings as a positive role model to build relationships with Community and organisations and promote VAHS services/programs. Seek and apply for grant and funding opportunities in line with team and VAHS objectives. Undertake other duties, which are incidental and peripheral to the main tasks, provided that such duties are reasonable and within the employee’s competence and trainingTo understand and promote the philosophy of the Victorian Aboriginal Health ServiceCollect, analyse and report on data to assist in the evaluation of our programs.Promote and support smoke-free workplace strategies at VAHS and with other partner organisations;Exemplify, role model and encourage positive physical activity, nutrition and non-smoking and quit smoking behaviors through building relationships in a variety of settings. 4. Mandatory Requirements Observe safe working practices as far as practicable to protect personal safety and the health and safety of others. Comply with the Victorian Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 and all the rules, regulations and relevant Codes of Practice.All employees are required to participate in the continuous improvement at VAHS and are required to understand and perform their responsibilities in relation to quality in their daily work and to ensure compliance with statutory and quality related requirementsAttend supervision sessions on a weekly basis.Maintain confidentiality in all circumstances in accordance with VAHS policies and procedures and Privacy Legislation..Attend unit meetings and staff meetings as required and in accordance to organisation practice.Work within the bounds of relevant legislation/regulations (e.g. Privacy, Duty of care, OHS, etc.) and relevant professional codes.Participate in on going professional developments and training as requiredParticipate in case management, general staff and unit meetingsBe able to work after hours and on weekends. A three month probation period applies. Annual performance reviews are undertaken. VAHS is a Smoke Free Workplace VAHS staff are required to familiarise themselves with and abide by VAHS Policies, Procedures, including the Code of Conduct.Successful applicants are required to have a current full Victorian driving license (unless otherwise agreed to), undergo a police check and possess a current working with children check. Relevant convictions will be taken into consideration when considering applicants for this position The VAHS offer some programs / services outside of normal business hours.
