Rochester Institute of Technology Quarantine to Reduce Community Risk of COVID-19If you have been in a Level 3 or 4 Travel Health Notice country or in other areas such as cities, locales, and/or events where the exposure to COVID-19 is likely, you will need to quarantine yourself for 14 days (). Please ensure the Health Center is aware that you are in quarantine (studenthealth@rit.edu or (585)-475-2255).Monitor your health and practice social distancing:Take your temperature with a thermometer two times a day and monitor for fever. Also watch for cough or trouble breathing. (use attached form)Stay home and avoid contact with others. Do not go to work or school for this 14-day period. Discuss your work situation with your employer before returning to work.Do not take public transportation, taxis, or ride-shares during the time you are practicing social distancing.Avoid crowded places (such as shopping centers and movie theaters) and limit your activities in public. This means DO NOT ATTEND CLASS. DO NOT ENTER THE DINING FACILITIES. DO NOT WALK AROUND CAMPUSKeep your distance from others (about 6 feet or 2 meters).What To Do If You Get Sick:If you get sick with fever (100.4°F/38°C or higher), cough, or have trouble breathing:Call the Student Health Center (585-475-2255) (students) or your personal physician (faculty/staff/students) to discuss your recent travel and symptoms.Your health professional will provide guidance about where best to seek care.Avoid contact with others. This is now considered isolation.(coronavirus/2019-nocov/travelers/after-travel-precautions/html)The SHC recommends that students be prepared for the possibility that they may be confined to their rooms or apartments for a period of time. Also-students should consider their options for returning home or staying with friends/relatives in the unlikely event of a campus closure. RIT Community Actions:Dining Services will supply meals to students in on-campus quarantine/isolation. Facilities has increased area cleaning.Public Safety is monitoring hallways, elevators and the community to ensure adherence to quarantine.Require quarantined/isolated students to strictly maintain physical separation from rest of RIT community .Recommended Supplies to have on hand in the event of illness: Disposable tissuesHand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol) Fluids such as tea, water, packets of Gatorade, packets of ramen noodles or chicken soup and juice.A disposable or digital thermometerSalt for salt water gargling for sore throatHoney—alone or mixed in tea for sore throat and coughsAcetaminophen (paracetamol, Tylenol) for fever and aches. Follow dosing guidelines carefully to avoid excessive amounts. Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed—the kind you have to ask for at the pharmacy counter, not Sudafed PE) for nasal congestionTWO WEEK SUPPLY OF ANY CHRONIC MEDICATIONSFood sufficient for 2 weeks if living off campus. Those on campus will have meals provided by Dining ServicesNot recommended: Aspirin or bination cold remedies—most of these contain Acetaminophen and can lead to taking excessive doses of medicine. Over the counter cough medicines—these are usually not very effective. A student with a significant cough should be evaluated in the SHC. Zinc lozenges, Airborne—not proven to be effectiveWhen in doubt, contact the SHC for advice about self-care. If you think you need to be seen, contact SHC to make an appointment. Students who experience significant cough, worsening of chronic asthma symptoms, fever that lasts > 2-3 days, dizziness and/or dehydration should be examined. If symptoms are severe and urgent assistance is needed, contact the Student Health Center and/or 911 for transportation.
