Job Description

1. GENERAL INFORMATION

Job Title: Security Officer

Grade: Currently A&C 3

*Salary is subject to agenda for change

Salary: £15,431 - £17,453 inclusive of London Weighting

Hours of duty: 37.5 hours per week

Annual Leave: 27 days per annum

Post summary: The post holder will be responsible for providing a comprehensive security service to the Trust, therefore, protecting patients, visitors, staff and assets against all acts of crime and other risk.

2. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. To maintain all equipment and uniform supplied to you in a clean and presentable manner, full uniform must be worn at all times while on duty in line with the uniform protocol.

2. To patrol either on foot or in a vehicle the areas specified in your duty instructions, taking note of items of security interest and corrective action as necessary. To follow duty instructions as issued by the Team Leaders.

3. To respond as speedily as possible to all calls for security assistance however received and take action to resolve incidents.

4. To respond to calls for security assistance from ED staff to deal with visitors and patients who are being verbally or physically abusive or disruptive, assess the situation and take appropriate action to resolve the situation taking all relevant factors into consideration.

5. To respond to calls for security assistance from ED medical staff to assist in resus with patients who need to be restrained in order to receive treatment.

6. To respond to calls for security assistance from ED medical staff or Mental Health teams to assist with patients being held or assessed under the Mental Health Act.

7. To respond to calls from ward staff to deal with patients who are being violent, abusive, disruptive or have absconded from the ward, assess the situation and take the appropriate action to resolve the situation taking all relevant factors into consideration.

8. To respond to calls from ward staff to deal with visitors who are being violent, abusive or disruptive, assess the situation and take the appropriate action to resolve the situation taking all relevant factors into consideration.

9. To assist Medical and Nursing staff in the restraint of patients using the minimum of force following the successful completion of the Physical Control & Restraint Techniques Training Program.

10. To respond immediately to all fire alert calls, taking action in line with the Trust fire and emergency procedures, to minimise risk to life and assets. To ensure fire escape routes and equipment are in working order and fully accessible at all times and current relevant fire legislation is being complied with.

11. To provide an escort service to members of staff moving around the hospital after dark.

12. To provide an escort service for the movement of cash and valuables.

13. To record all occurrences of security interest in log books and complete written reports.

14. To fully investigate crimes, taking statements and writing full reports and making recommendations to prevent a reoccurrence and provide crime prevention advice to clients.

15. To cover the Security Control Room and Reception Desks following guidelines/practice in place.

16. To operate Access Control, Intruder, Fire, CCTV equipment, and communication equipment.

17. To liaise with outside contractors and call in as necessary to maintain the correct working of security systems.

18. To report any defects found in the fabric of the building that may cause a breach of security or safety to the Estates department and take follow up action.

19. To pay attention to all steam, gas, electrical, oil and medical gas installations, detecting break down or wastage, taking immediate action that is necessary in the interest of safety or security once trained by Estates.

20. To attend calls for out-of-hours facilities assistance, advising the clients, solving problems and passing requests if necessary to the appropriate on-call cover.

21. To have a responsibility for the job holders own training and continuing professional development and attend training sessions as arranged either directly or through Team Leaders/Patient Services Manager.

22. To take part in lift evacuation following successful completion of training and certification as a ‘competent person’.

23. To provide a confidential and discreet service to all customers at all times.

3. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

3.1 Health & Safety Policy

Employees must be aware of the responsibilities placed on them under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, to ensure that the agreed safety procedures are carried out to maintain a safe environment for employees and visitors.

3.2 Security

It is the responsibility of all employees to work within the security policies and procedures of the Whittington Hospital NHS Trust to protect the patients, staff and visitors and the property of the Trust. This duty applies to the specific work area of the individual and the Hospital in general. All staff are required to wear official identification badges.

3.3 Data Protection

You should hold data only for the specific registered purpose and not use or disclose it in any way incompatible with such a purpose and ought to disclose data only to authorised persons or organisations as instructed. 3.4 No Smoking

The Hospital has promoted a No Smoking Policy as part of its responsibility for the provision of health. You will be required to work within the framework of this policy. Smoking is not permitted in offices.

3.6 Confidentiality

You are required to maintain confidentiality of any information concerning patients which you have access to or may be given in the course of your work, in accordance with current policy on confidentiality in the Whittington Hospital NHS Trust.

3.7 Method of Payment

Payment of salary is made into bank account/building society account by direct bank system. Details of a bank account or building society account will be required on the first day at work. There is no facility for any form of payment.

3.8 Customer Awareness

The Whittington Hospital expects it’s employees to communicate with colleagues, patients and visitors in a polite and courteous manner at all times.
