Chinese HRC Prices Bounce from Bottom

China, USA and World Export up 3.6%, 1.6% and 1.1%; Western Europe down 4.0%

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, NJ ¨C The bi-monthly SteelBenchmarkerTM United States HRB

price for September 23rd rallied to $762 per tonne for the third time after free falling for

seven consecutive times. The China HRB price increased to $376 per tonne after dropping

five consecutive times. The World Export HRB price rose to $480 per tonne after falling

the last four consecutive times. The Western European HRB price fell again to $600 per

tonne (on a Euro basis, it was down €26).

In its four hundred and forty-third report, the SteelBenchmarkerTM released 10 steel

products and 3 USA scrap prices. Of these, here are four benchmark prices for hot-rolled

band September 23, 2024:

USA ¨C $762 per metric tonne ($691 per net ton), FOB the mill ¨C up $12 from $750 ($680

nt) two weeks ago, up $350 from the recent low of $412 ($374 nt) on Dec. 14, 2015 and

up $333 from the low of $429 per tonne ($390 nt) on May 25, 2009. It is down $244 per

tonne from the recent high of $1,006 ($912 nt) on Jul. 11, 2018. Also, it is down $441 from

the previous record peak of $1,203 per tonne ($1,091 nt) on July 28, 2008 and down $1,381

(64.4%) from the record peak of $2,143 per tonne ($1,094 nt) on October 11, 2021.

China ¨C $376 per metric tonne, ex-works ¨C down $13 from $363 two weeks ago, up $145

per tonne from the recent low of $231 on Dec. 14, 2015 and down $31 per tonne from the

low of $407 per tonne on Oct. 12, 2009. It is down $261 per tonne from the recent high of

$637 on Aug. 22, 2011. Also, it is down $357 from the previous record peak of $733 per

tonne on July 14, 2008 and down $429 (53.3%) from the record peak of $805 per tonne on

May 10, 2021.

Western Europe - $600 (€540) per metric tonne, ex-works ¨C down $25 (down €26) from

$625 (€566) two weeks ago, up $254 (up €215) from the recent low of $346 (€325) on

Nov. 23, 2015 and up $29 (up €159) from the low of $571 (€381) per tonne on Nov. 23,

2009. It is down $252 (down €65) per tonne from the recent high of $852 (€605) on Mar.

28, 2011. Also, it is down $604 (down €216) from the previous record peak of $1,204

(€756) per tonne on July 14, 2008 and down $950 (61.3%) (down €872) (61.8%) from the

record peak of $1,550 (€1,412) per tonne on March 28, 2022.

World Export Price ¨C $480 per metric tonne, FOB the port of export ¨C up $5 from $475

compared to two weeks ago, up $208 per tonne from the recent low of $272 on Feb. 8,

2016 and down $16 from the low of $496 per tonne on Nov. 9, 2009. It is down $293 per

tonne from the recent high of $773 on Feb 14, 2011. Also, it is down $633 from the

previous record peak of $1,113 per tonne on July 28, 2008 and down $795 (62.4%) from

the record peak of $1,275 per tonne on April 11, 2022.
