How to Cite An Online Source in Your Paper:

When you do citations in a paper, you need to A. cite your source in your actual paper; B. include a “Works Cited” at the end of your paper that lists all the sources you used. Right now I’m only talking about citing a source in your paper, not the Works Cited. I’m also only talking about online sources, not books or magazines.

If your source has a known author:

Say you read an article called “The Best Way” by someone named George B. Jones. In your paper, you decide to mention something you learned in that article.

Sometimes people aren’t sure of the best way to do things. For instance, one man in New York spent twenty hours thinking of the best way to reorganize his house (Jones, “The Best Way”).

Notice I’ve put in parentheses the author’s last name and then the article title in quotes. Notice where the period is. It should be this: (Author’s Last Name, “Title”).

If your source has no known author:

Say you read an article called “Memories of Cleveland” and it had no author’s name listed. In your paper, you decide to mention something you learned in that article.

In Cleveland, for example, one out of every three teenagers hates the color red (“Memories of Cleveland”).

In this case, you use the whole title in parentheses, no author name. It should be (“Title”). If the title is very long, you can shorten it to the first few words.

Every time you mention a source in your paper – or you mention information you got from a source – you need to cite the source using parentheses.
