Dear Parent/Guardian:

A case of the pink eye (conjunctivitis) has been in your child’s classroom. This information is being passed onto you so you can help control the spread of this infection and protect the health of your child. Please observe your child and if he/she presents any symptoms of pink eye, keep him/her at home, and contact your child’s physician.

Symptoms

The symptoms consist of; dark pink or red discoloration of the eyes, white or yellow eye drainage, eye pain, and a swelling of the eyelid. This is often accompanied by cold-like symptoms (runny nose, low grade fever sneezing, etc.)

Treatment

The doctor should confirm the diagnosis and advise you about the course of action/treatment to take for your child.

Method of control

Direct and indirect contact with eye and nasal drainage of any infected person is mode of transmission. Children should not attend school until 24 hours after prescribed treatment is initiated. Good hygiene, including hand washing and sanitary disposal of eye and nasal secretions, will help control the spread of the infection.
