CPS Integration

CPS units HandoutSetting up your database:Open CPS from the start menu. Start>programs>einstruction>CPS>CPS. The first time you do this, you should get a window like this one. You want to create a new CPS database. Input the information it asks for, and you should have a brand new database. Next you need to add classes. This is done under the prepare tab. Create a class for each section you teach. After you have all your classes, you need to create students in each class. This is the tedious part. Input the names of each of your students. Now you are ready to create lessonsVerbal engagementThis is the easiest way to use the clickers. It requires zero setup. Make sure you are on the engage tab, and click on verbal engage. Choose a class, and make sure you title your session, because there will be no other way to identify what it is you were assessing. This task bar will appear. Click on verbal, and then choose the type of multiple choice question you wish to use. Now you provide your students with multiple choice questions. You can do this by giving them a handout, pulling a PDF up on your screen, writing questions and answer choices on the board, or simply saying a question and answer choices out loud. The task bar will float on top of any PDF or word document you put on your screen. These questions have 3 answer choices, so I chose Multiple Choice a-c in the drop down menu. You can choose different question types for different questions. When you have finished a question, a graph will pop up with students’ answers. Be sure to use the drop down menu to choose the correct answer. To move on, just choose the new type from the menu as shown below. When you have finished your assessment, click on the red x in the bottom left corner to close the session. Creating teacher led lessonsMake sure you’re in the lessons and assessments tab, under the prepare tab. Then click on new lesson. Give it a title. It should show up in the tree on the left. But it doesn’t have any questions yet. Click on new>new question to add questions. Type in the question and the answer choices. Make sure to put a check in the box next to the correct answer. Don’t forget to save each question. If you would like to change the number of answer choices, there is a drop down menu for that right next to the gear icon. You can also add graphics using the template drop down menu. Once you have input all the questions, you are ready to close the window and engage your lesson!Teacher lead engagementTo lead your students through a lesson question by question, start by making sure you are in the engage tab. Highlight the correct lesson, choose the correct class period, and choose engage. When the following task bar shows up, click on the next button to proceed to the first question. You must press start at the beginning of each question to allow students to answer. When all students have answered, press the end button. Once you press end, a green check mark should appear to the left of the correct answer. The numbers to the right of each answer indicate how many students chose that answer. To move to the next question use the green arrow. You can also use the timer to limit the amount of time students have to finish a question. Adjust the timer with the plus and minus buttons. Engage it with the > button. The question will end automatically when the timer runs out. When you have finished with the quiz, use the red x in the bottom left corner to close the window. ReportsReports are available to show you how well your students did on the assessments. Check under the reports tab. Select the session you would like a report on. Each session will have a different listing. Once you have a session selected you can press generate. A new window will pop up. If all you need is to find the grades for your students to transfer to your gradebook, use the instructor summery option. This gives you a list of students by name and the percentage of correct answers. If you want students to have a printout of their results, you can use the study guide option. It will list the correct answers and the answer the student gave for each question. Guided PracticeFollow along with the instructor and the handout to create a database and convert your multiple choice quiz into a verbal engagement.Independent PracticeUsing the handout, create a new five question teacher led lesson. Be sure to include at least one question with a graphic, and make sure the correct answers are marked in each question. Pair up with your shoulder partner and take turns engaging in your lessons. Give feedback to your partner about their lesson.AssessmentPresent your two lessons to the class - the verbal mode quiz, and the 5 question quiz you created for independent practice. Ask the following questions: Is the attitude of the lego men pulling the cart helpful to them? How does this relate to teachers learning new technology?Explain why taking the time to learn new technologies is important, and how the CPS devices help save time and gather useful data for formative assessmentSuggested Text: Many times teachers are reluctant to learn new technologies because they feel they don’t have the time to devote to learning a new tool. But just like these lego men and their wheeled cart, a little time upfront would give them a much more effective way of doing things, and in the long run, save them time. The objective is using the CPS software and assorted PDF guides (CN), students will implement the clickers in a classroom setting (B), using an appropriate subject in two different modes with fewer than 5 errors (CR).Prerequisites (4 minutes)In order to implement the CPS units successfully in your classroom, you should have basic computing skills and be able to create short multiple choice quizzes in your subject matter.
