CURRENT RETIREMENT & BENEFITS ISSUES

Mini-Workshops on April 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18, 2008

You are invited to join the UNMC Benefits staff and other presenters for the following free mini-workshops regarding current retirement and benefits issues during the week of April 14, 2008. You may attend any or all of the workshops offered. The workshop topics are as follows:

• Who Wants to be a Retiree? (Thinking of Retiring?) - Jo Watkins and Dana Teeters from the UNMC Benefits Office will discuss the requirements for retirement from UNMC, including the impact on your insurance. They will also address any other benefits questions you may have.

• Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Social Security & Medicare – and Aren’t Afraid to Ask! What can you expect from Social Security? What’s the best decision for you – drawing at age 62, 65, or later? Can you still work and draw Social Security? What about social security disability? Join Jackie Baer from the Social Security Administration and learn the answers.

• Your Medicare and Supplements in Plain English - Medicare Parts A, B & D (new prescription plan). What are these coverages? When do you enroll? Basically, how do Medicare supplements work? If you’re planning for your own retirement, or have parents on Medicare, join Aimee McKim from the Senior Health Insurance and Information Program (a division of the Nebraska Department of Insurance) to learn more. This information will help you make a decision regarding keeping your UNMC insurance as a retiree, as well as understand the options with Medicare.

• Getting Ready For Retirement – Developing a sound financial strategy for retirement can make a big difference. Now is the time to get answers to some important questions and begin planning. How much income will you need? Where will it come from? Is there a shortfall? Do you need to save more? How will you pay yourself in retirement to meet your needs? What income options best fit your situation? Come join Dale Mitchell and find out how TIAA-CREF can help you get organized, identify your goals, and develop a strategy to help achieve your goals today. Topics will include:

Evaluating your retirement income needs

The importance of examining your asset allocation

Income options available from TIAA-CREF

Taxes: How they may affect your retirement

Lifetime income, systematic withdrawal and other income options

Helpful Web tools and individual retirement counseling options

• So I’m Retired – Now What? - You’ve spent hours poring over the financial issues and now you’re completely prepared – right? You may be surprised. Retirement is another of life's transitions which require adjustments. In this workshop, Marlene Schneider will focus on the process of retirement from a non-financial perspective. This course will concentrate on the tasks that are suggested for a successful retirement. Program objectives include: (1) Understanding the phases of retirement; (2) Discovering the keys to a successful retirement; (3) Exploring the challenges of retirement.

Wills, Living Wills, Trusts - Who will make the decisions regarding distribution of your assets upon your death? What if you are too ill to make crucial decisions about your medical care? What are death taxes? Amy Longo with Ellick, Jones, Buelt, Blazek, and Longo will explore these issues and more with us.
