CHESS Christian School

The Green and Purple PagesIssue 3 Published Bi-Monthly April, 2017Jungle Jim’s Field TripArticle by Joshua BakerOn Friday, March 17, CHESS took a field trip to Jungle Jim’s in Fairfield, OH. Jungle Jim is a real person who is still alive today. He had a dream that came to life. That’s how the store originated in 1971. Jungle Jim’s looks like a theme park due to the unusual displays. The candy section has Coney Island bumper cars. There is a singing, Chuck-E-Cheese Elvis in the candy section. The world’s largest gummy python and frog sit next to each other. The store is gigantic! There are 6.5 acres of floor space and 180,000 items for sale. Over 60,000 items are international. We tried some samples and shopped for food. I ate a cheddar larvae! It tasted horrible! I would recommend Jungle Jim’s if you are looking for a bizarre shopping experience. It offers unique food and entertainment. This issue is going to be a little different, as I will be talking about our school's musical Beauty and the Beast Jr. Many students at CHESS are involved in Beauty and the Beast Jr., and they are all very excited to put on the show. They stay after school for rehearsal on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The cast is working tirelessly. The wonderful creative team of Mr. and Mrs. Robertson, Mrs. Rondeau, and Mrs. Smith are hard at work to make the show goes off without a hitch. Please come out to see the show and support CHESS on May 5th and 6th. This 75 minute show is not to be missed! Tickets are on sale before/after school and at lunch for $5 each. 00Elective HighlightColumn by Bethany CrankHello CHESS family! Toby Mac brought in some of the best singers including Mandisa, Matt Maher, Capital Kings, Ryan Stevenson, Hollyn, and Mac Powell of Third Day. The crowd was ecstatic! Most people did not sit down for the three and a half hour show. There were many styles of music played. Mac Powell shared new music from his secular country record. Toby Mac and Capital Kings rapped, spun records, and performed hip hop music. Ryan Stevenson and Matt Maher sang praise and worship style. Mandisa and Hollyn hit all the high notes and kept the crowd energized. My favorite song was “Light Shine Bright” by Toby Mac because everyone took their phone out, put the light on, and waved their phones in an arch. The concert ended with a party where pre-selected concert attendees joined the artists on-stage. Confetti rained from the ceiling. It was an awesome and unforgettable evening.00Toby Mac Hits Deep TourArticle by Kyle GeitgeyMany CHESS students attended the sold out Hits Deep Tour on Friday, March 10th. The March issue of Dance featured Aran Bell, a dancer with the American Ballet Theatre (ABT). Aran Bell got his fame at the age of 11 from starring in a documentary called First Position. I want to draw attention to men in the field of ballet. I've heard a lot of people say that ballet is not manly enough for boys. However, ballet requires a lot of athletic ability. As a dancer, I know! Every day I perform cardiovascular exercise and stretching. Men in ballet are expected to do the same stretches and moves as the women. When I go to Dayton Ballet performances, I stay for a Q&A with the cast. The dancers report that after a day of ballet, they head to the gym to workout. So you see, ballet takes a LOT of athletic ability. I hope that changed the way you think about dancers, especially men that perform ballet.00Music and DanceColumn by Bethany CrankHello CHESS family! According to my mom, cooking is a very beneficial thing to know how to do. I feel the same way. I believe that everyone should learn to cook one meal well each year.First, learning to cook is a great way to help your family. Say your mom was sick and your dad was out of town. Would you want to eat sandwiches for a week? I sure wouldn’t! If you knew how to cook, you could make dinner for your family. Also, if your parents were preparing to host a big family gathering, such as Thanksgiving, they might need your help to get ready. If you could cook, you could make the mashed potatoes!Second, cooking is fun! There are so many things you can make. You could bake sweets for your family. I love baking cookies for my friends and family! You could also have cooking parties with friends. You could bake cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and savory foods for others to bless them. I love baking with my friends! Most importantly, someday you might have your own house and family to take care of. Your small children will need to eat! Even though they would like to live off gummy bears and fish crackers, you will want your kids to eat nutritious foods to nourish their growing bodies. If you learn to cook healthy meals now, you’ll be more able to feed your own family later. This year, set a goal to learn how to cook one meal really well. Better yet, learn to cook two or even three really well. You just have to take it one step at a time- from teaspoon to tablespoon. Your parents will you be happy you did it, and so will you! 00From Teaspoon to TablespoonEditorial by Evelyn HuffIf your mom was sick, would you be able to cook dinner for your family? Besides the Chincoteague Pony, they are most likely the first breed you heard about.Mustangs were first brought over from Spain by Captain Cortez as Spanish moor horses. They must have thought wild was better than spurs so they made it happen. Morning after morning the men kept finding their mounts missing. “Oh well,” they said. “The Indians will do the work for us instead.”???????????????The plan backfired as the Indians took off with a “four legged friend beneath them”*.The Indians soon learned how to ride these steads and used them to hunt buffalo. “To them, a man’s wealth was how many horses he had”**. But the horses broke off into the wild in little bunches. The next time they were seen, they hardly remembered the ones who had set them free. The Indians still rounded up foals and young horses to train, so they were not horseless. The Mustang populated and grew till they were like ants at a picnic; only much less annoying. About ten years after the Civil War, cattle ranchers were complaining, “They are all over! We need to get rid of them…but how?” So they came up with a plan that would work, and has worked, until 1959. It was to get a plane and chase them, until they were more dead than alive, into a pen, then the ranchers tie them each tightly to a big tire so they could not move. They then loaded them into trucks that then took them to a slaughterhouse where they were made into cat and dog food. A woman named Annie Bronn went to the nation’s capital to stop it. Her plea was not ignored. On September 4, 1959, President Eisenhower signed the document that outlawed this mistreating of the Mustang. Sadly, this still goes on with special permission from the government. ?If the sight of the mustang running with the wind goes extinct, then the “Spirit of the West” will go with it. To me, the Mustang is definitely worth fighting for. ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? *from Album of Horses by Marguerite Henry page 68 **from Album of Horses by Marguerite Henry page 68 00The MustangBy Lexi VitasThe Mustang is one of the most recognized horses in the West. Winter lost her tail after being caught in a fishing net. Once Winter was rescued, she went to Clear Water Aquarium in Florida. One of the doctors at Clearwater Aquarium had the idea to make a prosthetic tail for Winter. This movie is based off a true story. I have been to Clearwater Aquarium and saw Winter. It was very cool. I rate this movie 9 out of 10 stars. 00Dolphin TaleReview by Samantha TerryDolphin Tale is about a dolphin named Winter. Winter lost her tail after being caught in a fishing net. She has a difficult time at first, but soon everyone knew her and liked her a lot. I like These Are My People because it is exciting and full of God’s Word. Gladys went on a dangerous trip and reads the Bible to people who have never heard it. I give this book 8 out of 10 stars. 00These Are My PeopleReview by Josh HuffThese Are My People is about how Gladys Aylward, a missionary, spread the love of God through China.
