Typing Test Formula and Illustrations The following parameters and formulae are used to calculate the speed and accuracy of the typing test conducted in the Unrestricted mode:
1. Gross Words: This is the total number of words typed by the candidate; it includes both correct and incorrect words.
Gross Words is calculated as: Typed words.
2. Gross Words per min (GWPM): The total number of words typed in one minute.
GWPM is calculated as: Gross Words/Time taken in minutes
3. Net Words: The number of correct words typed.
Net Words is calculated as: Correct Words
4. Net words per min (NWPM) = Net Words/Time taken in minutes
*Note: The above parameter has been considered for evaluation and preparation of merit with defined criteria of @35 wpm for English and @30 wpm for Hindi in CBSE Exam.
5. Accuracy: The number of correct words entered.
Accuracy of content is calculated as: NWPM*100/GWPM
Sample Illustrations of above formula are as follows;
1. Candidate A - typed total 390 words out of which 388 are correct and 2 are incorrect in a duration of 10 minutes. Hence,
Total Typed Words = 390 Correct Words = 388 Incorrect Words = 2 Gross words per Minute (GWPM) = 390/10 = 39 words per minute Net words per Minute (NWPM) = 388/10 = 38.8 words per minute Accuracy = 38.8*100/39 = 99.49 % Hence, actual typing speed of the candidate is 38.8 words per minute. 2. Candidate B - typed total 447 words out of which 447 are correct and 0 are incorrect in a duration of 10 minutes. Hence, Total Typed Words = 447 Correct Words = 447 Incorrect Words = 0 Gross words per Minute (GWPM) = 447/10 = 44.7 words per minute Net words per Minute (NWPM) = 447/10 = 44.7 words per minute Accuracy = 44.7*100/44.7 = 100 %
Hence, actual typing speed of the candidate is 44.7 words per minute. 3. Candidate C - typed total 316 words out of which 316 are correct and 0 are incorrect in a duration of 10 minutes. Hence, Total Typed Words = 316 Correct Words = 316 Incorrect Words = 0 Gross words per Minute (GWPM) = 316/10 = 31.6 words per minute Net words per Minute (NWPM) = 316/10 = 31.6 words per minute Accuracy = 31.6*100/31.6 = 100 % Hence, actual typing speed of the candidate is 31.6 words per minute. 4. Candidate D - typed total 521 words out of which 401 are correct and 120 are incorrect in a duration of 10 minutes. Hence, Total Typed Words = 521 Correct Words = 401 Incorrect Words = 120
Gross words per Minute (GWPM) = 521/10 = 52.1 words per minute Net words per Minute (NWPM) = 401/10 = 40.1 words per minute Accuracy = 52.1*100/40.1 = 76.96 % Hence, actual typing speed of the candidate is 40.1 words per minute.
5. Candidate E - typed total 550 words out of which 390 are correct and 160 are incorrect in a duration of 10 minutes. Hence, Total Typed Words = 550 Correct Words = 390 Incorrect Words = 160 Gross words per Minute (GWPM) = 550/10 = 55 words per minute Net words per Minute (NWPM) = 390/10 = 39 words per minute Accuracy = 52.1*100/40.1 = 70.90 % Hence, actual typing speed of the candidate is 39 words per minute.
