INTERMEDIATE DIVISION GAME RULES
• Each time slot is 70 minutes long.
• Games may not run over. If a game is not complete at the end of its specified time the game will end automatically whether complete or not. NO OVERTIME.
• Pre-game warm-ups will be a maximum of 5-minutes, but may need to start sooner to stay on time. There should be no break at half time unless the referee asks for it.
• We will use volunteer parents for the scoreboard and game book. Each coach should have a volunteer for each game.
• Each quarter will be a 12-minute running clock. During the last minute of each quarter the clock should stop on all whistles.
• EACH PLAYER SHOULD PLAY AT LEAST HALF OF THE GAME. NOTE THAT PLAYERS WHO ARE NOT SHOWING UP FOR PRACTICE WITHOUT EXCUSES SHOULD BE PLAYED LESS.
• MATCH PLAYERS OF EQUAL ABILITY. 1ST TEAM PLAYERS SHOULD PLAY AGAINST THE OPPONENTS' 1ST TEAM PLAYERS. 2ND TEAM PLAYERS WITH 2ND TEAM PLAYERS. COACHES WILL MEET BEFORE EACH GAME TO DISCUSS THEIR PLANNED 1ST TEAM AND 2ND TEAM PLAYERS.
Match players of equal ability. If a team is short players, the opposing coach may select which 1st team players will play with the 2nd team players. The intent is to match players of equal ability so the best 1 or 2 players should not move down to the 2nd team. Instead, the 5th best player (and 4th best player if needed) should play with the 2nd team. On the bench, you may have the best 1 or 2 players asking to go into the game. Please remain firm that they cannot. If team attendance is very low for a particular game and the best 1 or 2 players must play with the 2nd team players, stress to them that they are to pass the ball to their teammates. The time can be used to reinforce their passing skills and court vision while ensuring that the 2nd team players have a chance to contribute.
• Plays should not be designed to set picks for the ball handler. We encourage setting screens for teammates without the ball. In years past, teams would run set plays that only screened for the ball. Since ball handlers are generally the more developed players, games became a series of screens and layups for these players. Our intent is to ensure that all of the boys learn to move throughout the court without the ball. By running the Pass & Cut offense and setting screens for teammates without the ball, all of the boys will develop.
• Remember, winning is not the focus; it is about teaching the fundamentals of basketball; MAKE IT FUN!
• Game Player Rotation – Starters and game finishers should rotate on a per game basis (Example)
o Game 1 – 1st team starts each quarter (plays 6:00 minutes). 2nd team plays second half of the quarter (plays 6:00 minutes).
o Game 2 – 2nd team starts each quarter (plays 6:00 minutes). 1st team plays second half of each quarter (plays 6:00 minutes).
o The Intermediate Group Coordinator will explain how playing time is to be divided that will accommodate 11 or more players on each team.
Man-to-Man defense. NO ZONE DEFENSES ALLOWED. Man covering ball and one pass away should be with their men. Two passes away can be in lane. Switching, hedging and help defense is allowed.
• No pressing. Pick up at half court. It is open basketball once the ball crosses half court including trapping, etc.
• Each Team will be given a total of three (1-minute) time-outs per game.
• Foul Shots must start behind the foul line, but there will be no violations for going over that line.
