Solar System Trading Cards

You have probably seen various kinds of trading cards. Some of these feature sports figures or even Pokémon and include information about the player, statistics relating to their skills, abilities and, a picture.

Goal:

Your job is to create a set of eight (8) trading cards for the planets in our solar system including; size, planet features, distance from Sun, etc. Upon completion, on trading day, you MUST trade all 8 cards with students in the room. You will be graded on the cards you end up with so make sure you CHOOSE CAREFULLY.

Materials needed:

Nine (9) 4 x 6 index cards, colored pencils, markers, etc. and possibly pictures from magazines or websites if you are not artistic. (However, all pictures must fit on a 4x6 card).

Procedure:

COVER CARD

1. You must also include a cover card that includes: your name /class period / date and represents the ALL the planets in correct order. This diagram must be in full color with ALL the planets labeled.

Planet Cards:

FRONT OF CARD

1. Gather the information and make a design for your cards.

2. Statistics must include:

• The diameter or size of your planet/object (in km)

• Surface and atmospheric features

• Relative distance from the sun (in km or AU)

• Ability to support life

BACK OF CARD

• An accurately colored picture of your planet

• Three (3) ‘fun’ facts about your planet/object. You may want to include any known satellites or missions to observe your planet.

• Planet’s period of rotation

• Planet’s period of revolution
