Login Procedures

1. Open your web browser

2. Navigate to the Newington Public Schools homepage

3. click on Schools and choose John Wallace’s website

4. You will be brought to the home page.

5. Click on the Power School link on the right

6. The PowerSchool login screen appears

7. Type in your web ID (username)

8. Type in the web Password (password)

(If you do not know your username and

password, please call the school)

9. Student name and grade information are displayed above the toolbar

10. By default, the Grades and Attendance view is displayed upon login. Lunch Balance and My Calendar are not currently being used.

NOTE: If you are not actively working in Parent Portal, your session may timeout automatically. If so, you need to log in again.

Viewing Assignment Details

1. Be sure the Grades and Attendance screen is displayed.

If not, to view the Grades and Attendance screen, click on the Grades and Attendance icon on the toolbar

2. Click on the letter grade or percent in the appropriate column (T1 for Trimester 1, E1 for Essentials Cycle 1, S1 for Semester 1, etc.)

3. The following information is displayed:

• Due Date for the assignment

• Category for the assignment

• Name of assignment

• Score for assignment and points possible

• Percentage earned for each assignment

• Letter grade for each assignment

• Final grade to date (on the top row)

4. If the name of an assignment is blue, the teacher has added a description about the assignment. To view the description, click on the name of the assignment.

5. To return to the Grades and Attendance screen, click the Back button or click on the Grades and Attendance icon on the toolbar.

6. To exit the Parent Portal, click on the logout button in the upper right corner of the screen above the toolbar.

Grades History

1. Click on the Grades History icon on the toolbar.

This screen displays student grades for the previous grading period within the same school year.

2. Until the end of a grading period, this screen will not have data to display.

3. Grades are stored for the following terms:

Academics – Trimester 1, 2 and 3

Essentials : Depends on the particular class. Options are:

• Semester 1 and Semester 2

• Quarter 1, 2, 3 and 4

• Essentials Cycles – E(1 - 8)

4. To exit Grades History, click on the Back button

or choose another icon from the toolbar on top.

5. To exit the Parent Portal, click on the logout button in the upper right corner of the screen above the toolbar.

Attendance History

1. Click on the Attendance History icon on the toolbar. This screen displays student attendance information.

2. Attendance is taken at the beginning of each school day in baseroom, which is called “homeroom” in PowerSchool.

3. The attendance code definitions are displayed in a legend at the bottom of the screen.

4. To exit Attendance History, click the Back button or choose another icon on the toolbar.

5. To exit the Parent Portal, click on the logout button in the upper right corner of the screen above the toolbar.

EMAIL NOTIFICATION

1. Click on the Email Notification icon on the toolbar.

2. This option allows you to receive grade and attendance information through email. The information received varies according to the options selected.

Available options are:

• Summary of current grades and attendance

• Detailed reports showing all assignments scores for each class

• Detailed report of attendance

• School announcements

Click on the options to check the box. Balance Alert is not currently used.

3. Use the drop-down arrow to select how often you would like to receive this information via email.

4. If you would like information sent immediately, click the “Send Now” box.

5. Enter your email address. Use a comma to separate multiple email addresses.

6. Click on the blue Submit button.

7. To exit Email Notification, click on the Back button or choose another icon on the toolbar.

8. To exit the Parent Portal, click on the logout button in the upper right corner of the screen above the toolbar.

TEACHER COMMENTS

1. Click on the Teacher Comments icon on the toolbar.

2. The student’s current schedule is displayed. If a teacher has a general comment in the gradebook (not a specific comment attached to an assignment), the comment is displayed in the right hand column.

3. If you click on the name of the teacher, it will open your default email and place the teacher’s school email address in the “TO” line.

4. To exit Teacher Comments, click on the back button or choose another icon on the toolbar.

5. To exit the Parent Portal, click on the logout button in the upper right corner of the screen above the toolbar.

Class Registration

This function is used by 8th-graders with the help of the middle school counseling department.

Quit PowerSchool Parent Portal

1. When finished working in Parent Portal, it is important to log out of the application.

You can log out of Parent Portal from any page in the application.

2. Click the Logout button in the upper right hand corner above the icon bar. The login page will appear. You must enter your username and password again to redisplay the Parent Portal start page.
