The Love of Jesus

The Love of Jesus

Introduction:

Can you recall your very first love? Of course you can. Mine was a girl named Pat in junior high. She played clarinet in the band and she was my first date resulting in a kiss. We had gone to a dance, with mom driving of course…how romantic! When I returned to mom’s car after this romantic moment at her doorstep, I declared my undying love for Pat to my mom. I was crushed when Pat told me the next week that she was now going steady with the second chair trombone player. Ahhh, love.

Thank God that when we come to know the love of Jesus, we can be assured that He’s not going to drop us for a flute player!

[So we must be talking about a very different kind of love with Jesus]

I. Jesus’ Love Defined

A. English language only has one word for love

1. I love my wife

2. I also love my sister (and unless you are from Arkansas, that’s a very different love)

3. I love pizza, and so on

B. agapáo love, the kind of love Jesus talked of and demonstrated is love that would go to the cross and give up one’s life that all men might have the hope of salvation

C. Jn 3:16-17

[Let’s look at how that agapeo type love was born out in His life]

II. Jesus’ Love Shown Through His Life

A. Jn 1:14 He loved enough to come to earth and walk amongst us

B. Lk 5:32 He reached out not to the rich and famous, but to sinners like us

C. Lk 22:46 even in His darkest hour His concern was for His disciples

D. Mt 28:20 He promised to be with us to the end of the age

[You know what is even more amazing to me even than Jesus’ love for me is that He wants to share that love with others through me]

III. Jesus’ Love Through Us

A. Mt 28:19 Go, make disciples

B. Jas 5:19 Called to help restore lost sheep

C. 2 Tim 4:2 Preach the word

Conclusion:

A preacher announced he would be preaching the next Sunday evening on "The Love of Jesus." As the shadows fell and the light ceased to come in through the church windows, the congregation gathered. In the darkness, the preacher lighted a candle and carried it to a cross he had placed in the front. First of all, he illumined the crown of thorns hanging on the top, next, he held the candle up to the nails where Jesus’ hands and feet would have been. In the hush that fell, he blew out the candle and left. There was nothing else to say.
