Life of Christ – Part 2Lesson 5Washing the Disciples FeetRead John 13.1-20According to John 13.1, how does Jesus love us? What does this mean? Where else do we learn about the love of Christ for us? Take some time to reflect on this and praise God for His love for us through Christ! What does Jesus do to serve and love his disciples during this meal? Read John 13.4-5. Did Jesus have to wash feet? What does this tell you about the nature and attitude of Jesus? ?Why didn’t any of the disciples think to offer to wash feet? What were some of the other disciples doing during this meal? Read Luke 22.24. ?What was Peter’s reaction when Jesus came to wash his feet? Why did Peter react the way he did? How did Jesus respond to Peter? ?What does it mean to have “a share with Jesus”? Read John 13.12-15. ?How does seeing Jesus serve and love his disciples help you to understand how you are called to serve and love people in your life? ?Does this story about Jesus washing feet, and the humility that Jesus models, remind you of any other passages of Scripture about Jesus? Read Philippians 2.3-8. How are these passages similar? ?What does Jesus tell his disciples to do based on what he has done for them? Read John 13.13-17. What is the bigger lesson Jesus is teaching? ?Name something that is equivalent to washing feet in the first century that most people would not be willing to do today. ?Have you ever found yourself unwilling to do something that Jesus would have done if He were in your shoes?Jesus commands us to love and serve one another. How you can specifically love and serve others in your life the way Christ did? Consider your relationships as a parent, child, friend, spouse, and /or member of the body? Who is the Greatest? Read Luke 22.24-30Jesus clearly rede?ned greatness as taking the position of a servant. Why is this so hard for us to swallow? The ?rst disciples of Jesus constantly battled pride in arguing about who was the greatest. See Matthew 18.1-3, Matthew 20.20-26, Mark 9.33-36, and Luke 9.46-48. Summarize Jesus’ answers. How do you see pride rearing its ugly head in your life (work? family? serving? social media? sports?) Jesus gave them a promise for the future. What was the promise? When and why will it take place? The Betrayer RevealedRead Matthew 26.21-25, Mark 14. 18-21, Luke 22.21-23, and John 13.18-30Jesus refers to _____ when he says that the Scripture must be fulfilled? Read Psalm 41.9. How does what happened with David and his trusted counselor Ahithophel, serve as a prophecy of what will happen with Jesus and his disciple Judas? Read 2 Samuel 15.12 & 31; 16.20-23; 17.5-7. ??What does Jesus say about the purpose of prophecy in this passage? Read John 13.19. Jesus knows what Judas is about to do, yet he doesn’t stop him. What does this tell you about the mission and purpose of Jesus, and his great love for you? What do we learn about Jesus in these last moments with Judas?First prediction of Peter’s DenialRead Luke 22.31-34 and John 13.36-38When Jesus tells Peter that he will deny him, he also says that he prays for him. When the bread was lifted up at Passover, the head of the household said “This is the bread of affliction which our fathers ate in the land of Egypt. Let everyone who hungers come and eat; let everyone who is needy come and eat the Passover meal.”?Compare this with what Jesus said before the Lord’s Supper. How is this different and what is the significance?During the Lord’s Supper, Jesus established a New Covenant. What is this New Covenant? Compare it with the Old Covenant. See Jeremiah 31.Old CovenantNew Covenant Paul tells us about this specific meal, now known as the Lord’s Supper or communion. According to 1 Corinthians 11.23-26, when you take communion, why do you take it, what are you remembering and for how long? How does this fit with Jesus’s words in Matthew 26.29? What do you learn from this passage about the kingdom, or what is affirmed? What does this mean? How does this relate to us? See also Revelation 19.9.As Jesus and the disciples left the last supper, they would have been singing three Psalms known as the Hallel, found in Psalm 116-118.
