Greetings 10-Key and Skillbuilding Students
Greetings Keyboard Mastery Students: (Make changes in yellow areas)
Supervisor/Teacher: Enter name and email.
General Information—You signed up for a web-based keyboarding class: Follow the syllabus directions on your computer beginning with Step One for a personal demo of this course. This is a great course not only for beginners but also for the experienced typist who wants to improve speed and accuracy. The best way to improve speed and accuracy is to go over the basics again at a higher rate of speed—let your fingers fly. (You would add to/change this to reflect your course identification—add Grading Scale, etc.)
You do NOT have to turn anything in—I can see your scores and grades online in my Teacher Manager. Read this syllabus carefully! Direct any course questions to your instructor.
Step One— Your teacher will let you know whether to purchase the Textbook/Access Code package or just the Access Code. You may purchase an access code online or from the Bookstore. An Access Code is necessary to enter and use your keyboarding software. To purchase an Access Code online:
1. Using a Web Browser (Usually Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer, go to
2. Rest pointer on “ORDER NOW” tab to reveal next choices
3. Scroll down and click on “Student Retail Store” link
4. Under CATEGORIES on right, click on “Access Codes”
5. Locate your course and click on the “Add to Cart” button
6. Scroll down to see the Total of your Cart
7. Click on the “Proceed to Checkout” button.
8. To skip Registration to create an account, click on Register button. Follow directions and enter information. Click Continue button to proceed.
9. You will need to enter a valid credit card number.
Step Two—Watch the Short Correct Technique Video
To be an excellent typist, you need to have good techniques:
• Assuming you are still connected to , Rest your pointer on the SUPPORT link, and click on “Popular Videos”

• Scroll down to the S.E.C.R.E.T Keyboarding Techniques”. After starting it, it continues automatically—you do not need to press the mouse button. Press ESC key when finished.

Step Five—Follow along on your computer as you read these step-by-step directions. They will give you a demo of your course.

1. Click the User Info icon. You may enter your email address and phone number. These will appear on the class report for the instructor. You can change your individual password from the one given by your instructor to a personal password if you wish. (The instructor may lock the password so it can’t be changed.) When through, click “Close” if no changes, or “Save changes”.
2. Click the Setup icon. Check the course standards set by your teacher by clicking on the various tabs beginning with Options. You cannot change anything in the Setup. Notice in the Grades tab the speed and accuracy required for an “A” grade.
3. The Introduction is designed to give you practice on some of the important concepts you saw in the Technique Video, take a short timing, and view your score in the Progress Report.
4. Click Lessons Menu in the green area. When you click on the Lessons Menu icon, a box appears asking for your Access Code—this is asked for only once. This code is in the back of your textbook, or is the one purchased online. After entering the Access Code, you are now into the course software:
In the dark strip on top of your window, if necessary click the Expand button to see the course options:

Step Six—Take the Course Entry Timing.
5.
6.
7.
8.
1. Click on the “Lessons Menu” at the top of the menu on the left. Click on the Course Entry link.
Your Course Entry timing will appear. You probably can’t see the whole timing—here is what you do to see the whole timing. Click on the Full Screen button, and move the Adjust Font lever (under Best Scores) until you see the whole timing:
[pic]
Because you clicked on the Full Screen button and the Adjust font lever, you will need to click in the rectangle to put your cursor there to begin. Ordinarily, without clicking anywhere, the cursor is already there ready for you to begin keying.
2. You will press the Tab key and begin to type. If your teacher has blacked out your timing screen, it will read Timing in Progress instead of you seeing what you are typing. If you are hunting & pecking (reading a few words, then looking down at the keys to type them out, then looking at the copy to read a few more words, etc.), instead of keeping your eyes on the copy, when you pause for 2 seconds, your practice timing will stop and you will have to start over. This was designed to help you learn to keep your eyes on the copy, not the keyboard or your fingers! The first lessons are super easy to help you learn speed and accuracy for when you reach the longer paragraph timings. Take this opportunity to learn the keys well!
3. To get back to the Lessons Menu to begin your lessons, click Home in the top menu ribbon, then click on Lessons Menu.

Step Seven—Begin with Lesson 1, Line 1 (Exercise 1)
1. Lesson 1—Home Row is highlighted in the menu on the top left. Line 1 shows on the first tab at the top indicating your first drill.
• Before you begin, move the Adjust Font slider (lower right) to the right to make the letters larger. Then click in the rectangle above the Adjust Font and Best Scores area to put your cursor in position for your timing.
• The timer will begin when you press the first key. On the one-liners, when you get to the end and have more time, don’t space—just press the Enter key and start over. KEEP TYPING UNTIL THE TIMER STOPS YOU!
• If you know you made a mistake and want to start over without waiting for it to time out, click on the Time Remaining button and it will reset.
• When new keys are presented, the directions are above the partial keyboard. Click on the “Show Reach” button and the new key reaches will blink on your mini keyboard screen. The color of the blinking key shows which finger of the home row depresses the new key.

NOTES: 1) Again … Your teacher may have turned off the timing view so you can’t see what you have typed until the timing is over. This is designed to encourage you to keep your eyes on the text—do NOT look at your fingers or the keys! 2) Your teacher may have turned on a timeout feature—if you pause more than the seconds allowed, your timing will abort and you will have to start over. Again, this is designed to encourage you to keep your eyes on the text and not waste time looking down at your keys. If you look at the keyboard to hunt and peck, you won’t be able to find your way back to continue typing and your practice timing will abort. Real typing skill is “by touch,” without looking at the keys or your fingers. 3) Your teacher may have set a “minimum wpm.” If your practice timing meets the errors allowed and doesn’t record, your timing probably didn’t meet the minimum wpm. Keep practicing.
9. NOW YOU CAN START TO PRACTICE--Practice Lines 1-4 until you reach your goal for an “A” grade. The beginning timed exercises are very easy for a reason—the higher your wpm scores on the beginning exercises, the easier it will be to do the paragraphs later. So, let your fingers fly!!!
• Take the drill as many times (unlimited) as necessary to reach your goal. The best three speeds of all taken that meet the accuracy rate will automatically record.
• If you want to take the timing again, click the Time Remaining: button and it will reset. You might also see a Try Again button, which appears if your score isn’t high enough or you had too many errors.
• To go to the next exercise, click on Line 2.
• Experienced Keyboarding Students--Before going very far, find out what your current skill level is. Take the Course Entry timing until you have a score recorded (you have to meet the accuracy standard set by the teacher). Take the Course Exit timing when you complete all the assigned lessons. Your improvement will show on the Final Grade Report.
10. Progress Reports
[pic]
• Click on Progress Reports, and Simple Report to see the best speeds recorded for each exercise.
Reminder: If your screen is small, you might need to click on the expand button to see the menu above:
[pic]
11. Grade Reports
[pic]
• Click on Grade Reports to see either your Current Grade or Final Grade:
✓ Select Current Grade Report to see your average score for all completed lessons so far in order to compare it to the grading scale. This is often used as a mid-term grade.
✓ Select Final Grade Report. A final grade will appear only after all assigned lessons are completed.
REMINDER: When you get to 2-minute practice timings, or longer, at first you won’t see everything on the screen. You don’t need to scroll! Click on the Full Screen button at the bottom of your screen, and move your Adjust Font lever forward or backward until you see your whole timing.
[pic]
IMPORTANT: If you want to raise your grade, go back to your Progress Report and note which scores are lower than your goal. If you right click on the lower score, the program will automatically take you to that lesson and exercise. Practice to raise any lower scores—higher scores on the Progress Report can raise your final grade.
HOW TO SEND A MESSAGE TO YOUR TEACHER
