* The essay section requires that two essays be written during a total time of 90 minutes. The first essay, a common theme in American literature and a list of major American authors are provided. Students must write a well-organized essay discussing the way that theme is handled in works by any two of those authors. For the second essay, students must respond to one of two topics--one of two topics--one requiring analysis of a poem, the other requiring analysis of a prose excerpt. In each case, the specific poem or prose is provided and questions are offered for guidance. The essay must be well organized in clear and precise prose. This essay section is graded by Norwich University faculty. There is an additional fee for taking this section of the exam.
* The essay section provides students with 40 minutes to respond to two or three essay topics. The first essay topic is persuasive analysis of a poem. For the second essay students are given 55 minutes to choose any work by a particular author to appropriately support the claim, or select works from a designated list provided. This essay section is graded by Norwich University faculty. There is an additional fee for taking this section of the exam.
** Students who have earned or transferred in Modern Language credits cannot subsequently earn or transfer in credits for Modern Language courses below the level they tested into, previously earned at Norwich or previously transferred in.
