COURSE DESCRIPTION

Second semester, students will focus on multiple concepts of Earth Science, including studies in the areas of natural resources, conservation, oceanography, and meteorology. We will continue to develop good characteristics of science, processing skills, understanding and applying the nature of science, and reading in the content area.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

The following academic concepts will be covered. THIS IS ONLY A GUIDE AND IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

|CURRICULUM OVERVIEW |

|Unit 3 – Geology: Soil, Natural Resources, Conservation (Jan 4-20). Chapters: 5 sections 1-3, and 10 section 3 and 4 |

|Standards: |

|S6e5. Investigate the scientific view of how the earth’s surface is formed. |

|h. Describe soil as consisting of weathered rocks and decomposed organic material. |

|i. Explain the effects of human activity on the erosion of the earth’s surface. |

|j. Describe methods for conserving natural resources such as water, soil, and air. |

|Unit 4 –Hydrology (Jan. 23- Feb. 24). Chapters: 11 section 1, 13 sections 1-2, 14 sections 1-4 |

|Standards: |

|S6E6 Students will describe various sources of energy, and with their uses, and conservation. |

|a. Explain the role of the sun as the major source of energy and the sun's relationship to wind and water energy. |

|b. Identify renewable and nonrenewable resources. |

|S6E3 Students will recognize the significant role of water in earth processes. |

|a. Explain that a large portion of the Earth’s surface is water, consisting of oceans, rivers, lakes, underground water, and ice. |

|b. Relate various atmospheric conditions to stages of the water cycle. |

|c. Describe the composition, location, and subsurface topography of the world's oceans. |

|d. Explain the causes of waves, currents, and tides. |

|Unit 5 – Meteorology (Weather and Climate) (Feb. 27-April 21). Chapters: 15 sections 1-3, 16 sections 2-4, and 17 sections 1-3 |

|Standards: |

|S6E4 Students will understand how the distribution of land and oceans affects climate and weather. |

|a. Demonstrate that land and water absorb and lose heat at different rates and explain the resulting effects on weather patterns. |

|b. Relate unequal heating of land and water surfaces to form large global wind systems and weather events such as tornados and thunderstorms. |

|c. Relate how moisture evaporating from the oceans affects the weather patterns and the weather events such as hurricanes. |

|S6E2 Students will understand the effects of the relative positions of the earth, moon and sun. |

|c. Relate the tilt of the earth to the distribution of sunlight throughout the year and its effect on climate. |

|The remainder of the semester will focus on review for standardized testing and various performance task assessing multiple standards and “tying it |

|all together.” |

|*Standards addressing the characteristics and habits of science will also be taught on an ongoing basis throughout the semester. |

|*Please refer to the Georgia Performance Standards for detailed listings of standards. () |

|*Pacing may vary depending on the individual teacher and students’ progression. |

GRADING SYSTEM: The DeKalb County School District believes that the most important assessment of student learning shall be conducted by the teachers as they observe and evaluate students in the context of ongoing classroom instruction. A variety of approaches, methodologies, and resources shall be used to deliver educational services and to maximize each student’s opportunity to succeed. Teachers shall evaluate student progress, report grades that represent the student’s academic achievement, and communicate official academic progress to students and parents in a timely manner through the electronic grading portal. See Board Policy IHA.

|GRADING CATEGORIES |*GRADE PROTOCOL |

|Formative Assessment (Pre-Assessment) – 0% |A 90 – 100 ~P (pass) |

|Assessment During Learning – 25% |B 80 – 89 ~F (fail) |

|Guided, Independent, or Group Practice – 45% |C 71 – 79 |

|Summative Assessment or Assessment of Learning– 30% |D 70 |

| |F Below 70 |

|DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS |

|STUDENT PROGRESS |Semester progress reports shall be issued four and a half, nine and thirteen and a half weeks into each semester.  |

| |The progress of students shall be evaluated frequently and plans shall be generated to remediate deficiencies as |

| |they are discovered. Plans shall include appropriate interventions designed to meet the needs of the students. See |

| |Board Policy IH. |

|ACADEMIC INTEGRITY |Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, providing false |

| |information, falsifying school records, forging signatures, or using an unauthorized computer user ID or password. |

| |See the Code of Student Conduct - Student Rights and Responsibilities and Character Development Handbook. |

|HOMEWORK |Homework assignments should be meaningful and should be an application or adaptation of a classroom experience.  |

| |Homework is at all times an extension of the teaching/learning experience.  It should be considered the possession |

| |of the student and should be collected, evaluated and returned to the students. See Board Policy IHB. |

|MAKE-UP WORK |When a student is absent because of a legal reason as defined by Georgia law or when the absence is apparently |

|DUE TO ABSENCES |beyond the control of the student, the student shall be given an opportunity to earn grade(s) for those days |

| |absent. Make-up work must be completed within the designated time allotted. See Board Policy IHEA. |

|SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS |

|CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS |Tardies- be in class on time with all required materials every day. The school tardy policy will be enforced. |

| |Homework- Homework is expected to be completed as assigned. Homework can often be found on the website. |

| |Late work- It is the policy of the DeKalb County School System that students will receive a grade of zero for any missing |

| |assignments, until student work is completed. Student work must be completed within time allowed by their teacher. Points |

| |will be deducted for late work. |

| |Make-up work- Announced work, such as homework, quizzes and major assessments are due the day the student returns. For |

| |each day’s excused absence, students will have one day to make up missed work. If a student is absent under extenuating |

| |circumstances, special arrangements can be made to make up work. IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO CHECK THE CALENDAR |

| |AND/OR REQUEST MISSED WORK. |

| |Academic honesty- Receiving or giving information for an assignment is cheating and when caught in the act students will |

| |not receive credit nor receive the opportunity for a chance of make-up. Plagiarism is not acceptable: If a student takes |

| |information from the Internet or any printed resources without a citation, it is considered plagiarism and will result in a|

| |reduction in grade. |

| |Nameless papers- papers turned in without a name will be thrown out. Students will need to do the assignment over |

| |resulting in a late grade. |

| |Failed work- students may redo assignments, with teacher permission, that they earn a 50 or below on in order to bring that|

| |grade up to a maximum of 70%. |

| |Lab work-Students who fail to follow lab safety protocols will be removed from the current lab and possible future labs |

| |depending on the offense and given an alternative assignment to be completed and graded. |

| |Students must adhere to the DCSS Student Code of Conduct, as well as specific class rules established and reviewed by each |

| |teacher individually. |

|MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES |Students are expected to bring: paper, book, notebook, a working pen or pencil, coloring tool, and glue/glue stick to class|

| |every day. They should NOT have to borrow supplies. |

|EXTRA HELP |Safety nets may include but are not limited to: before and after school tutorial, Lunch Café, special projects, teacher |

| |tutorials, and technology based projects, research and other extended learning opportunities. |

|PARENTS |Please check my website weekly for homework, important dates, required projects and other special assignments, and helpful |

|AS PARTNERS |websites and other resources. |

| |Check the agenda daily. Work should be written in it or it should say “none” if they have no homework. |
