Gathering Litany

Gracious God of All, we move now to worship you

in this space, made holy by your life-giving presence

throughout these days.

From the North, the South, the East and the West

we bless your holy name!

Gracious God of All, we long for your healing presence,

to bless the good work we have done in your name,

but also to make right our wrongs,

and to make us whole where we are broken,

From the North, the South, the East and the West

we bless your holy name!

Gracious God of All, we welcome your Spirit to transform this place.

From the North, the South, the East and the West

we bless your holy name!

Gracious God of All, we have come to worship you!

You are Creator, Christ and Spirit—One. Hallelujah!

Centering Hymn The Corinthian Song Text: Michael Stampley

Tune: V Michael McKay

I am troubled, yet not distressed.

Perplexed, but not in despair.

Cause I'm a vessel full of power,

With a treasure, none can compare.

Persecuted, but not forsaken.

Cast down, but not destroyed.

I'm a vessel full of power

With a treasure, from the Lord.

I'm a vessel full of power

With a treasure from the Lord.

So thank you Father for your power

It has resurrected me.

Oh, the painful circumstances

That my poor soul could not flee.

Bruised and battered but not broken

Brought my sin back, From sin I am free

Cause I am a vessel, got a whole lot of power

With a treasure, delivered me.

I'm a vessel full of power

With a treasure from the Lord.

Thank you Father

For your power, it has resurrected me.

Oh, the painful circumstances

That my poor soul could not flee.

Prayer of Invocation and Illumination

Still Speaking Spirit, in the wonder of light,

and in the soul-stirring movement around us,

speak to our hearts—give us the Word that will bring new life.

Come, Holy Spirit, Come!

Still Speaking Spirit,

in the riffs and runs we hear in the strange and familiar;

speak to our hearts—give us the Word that will bring new life.

Come, Holy Spirit, Come!

Still Speaking Spirit, in the silence between the beats,

in the silence that follows the comma;

speak to our hearts—give us the Word that will bring new life.

Come, Holy Spirit, Come!

Still Speaking Spirit, in Your Word embodied

through prophetic and powerful preaching

speak to our hearts—give us the Word that will bring new life.

Come, Holy Spirit, Come!

Still Speaking Spirit, we long

to be challenged, transformed and renewed by your Word

as it dances in our imaginations,

resounds melodically in our mind

and is breathed out before us.

So speak to our hearts—give the Word that will bring new life.

Come, Holy Spirit, Come!

Scripture Readings

Revelation 22:1-7 (CEB, adapted)

Then the angel showed me the river of life-giving water

shining like crystal, flowing from the throne of God and the Lamb

through the middle of the city’s main street.

On each side of the river is the tree of life,

which produces twelve crops of fruit, bearing its fruit each month.

The tree’s leaves are for the healing of the nations.

There will no longer be any curse.

The throne of God and the Lamb will be in it,

And God’s servants will worship.

They will see God’s face, and the holy name will be on their foreheads.

Night will be no more.

They won’t need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun,

for the Lord God will shine on them,

and they will rule forever and always.

Then the angel said to me, “These words are trustworthy and true.

The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets,

sent an angel to show God’s servants what must soon take place.

 “Look! I’m coming soon.

Favored is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy

contained in this scroll.”

Matthew 10: 40-42 (CEB translation)

Jesus said, “Those who receive you are also receiving me,

and those who receive me are receiving the one who sent me.

Those who receive a prophet as a prophet

will receive a prophet’s reward.

Those who receive a righteous person as a righteous person

will receive a righteous person’s reward.

I assure you that everybody who gives

even a cup of cold water to these little ones

because they are my disciples will certainly be rewarded.”

Song Total Praise Text and Tune: Richard Smallwood

Lord, I will lift mine eyes to the hills

Knowing my help is coming from You

Your peace you give me in time of the storm

You are the source of my strength

You are the strength of my life

I lift my hands in total praise to you

Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen

Hymn of Commitment Sing a New World into Being Text: Mary Louise Bringle

Tune: Hymn to Joy

Sing a new world into being,

sound a bold and hopeful theme.

Find a tune for silent yearnings,

lend your voice and dare to dream.

Dream a church where all who worship

find their lives and loves belong.

Sing a new world into being,

sing as Christ inspires your song.

Sing a new world into being,

where each gender class and race.

Brings its rainbow gifts and colors

to God’s limitless embrace.

Where the lines that once divided

form instead the ties that bind.

Sing a new world into being,

Risk transforming heart and mind.

Sing a new world into being,

where the homeless find a home.

Where no children ever hunger,

but are filled with God’s shalom.

Where all people work for justice,

where all hate and vengeance cease.

Sing a new world into being,

raise the harmonies of peace.

Sing a new world into being,

Join the ancient prophets’ cry.

For a time of health and plenty,

when all tears have been wiped dry.

When compassion flows like waters,

pouring balm for all who grieve.

Sing a new world into being,

live the promise you believe.

Offering This service’s Offering will go to support The Antoinette Brown Society, formed in 2015

to multiply women’s innovative leadership in church and society by creating opportunities for UCC clergywomen to collaborate and share wisdom to sustain transformative leadership. The work of networking and mobilizing clergywomen for vital, life-changing ministries has taken different forms in the past two years, including negotiation seminars and a UCC Clergywomen Conference in 2016. Our next leadership event will take place in 2018; the keynote presenters at that leadership event will be the 2017 Antoinette Brown Award recipients. Your generous offering today will help underwrite this gathering for passionate, committed clergy women leaders in our denomination!
