Selfish Christianity!

And when they had found Him on the other side of the sea, they said unto Him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither? Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. [John 6:25-27]

Think honestly about this question: Which interests you more — who Jesus is or what He can do for you? I’m afraid that too many of us are more concerned about what the Lord can give us than we are about getting to know who He is.

But this is nothing new — Jesus had the same problem when He walked on earth. The crowds often sought Him out for what He could do for them. Even though their needs were quite often legitimate, Christ knew their motives.

There is a fine line between selfishly trying to use the Lord to get what we want and humbly coming to Him with our needs and struggles. Some of the issues we bring to Him are so pressing and urgent in our minds that our desire for Him to take action in the way we want becomes greater than our willingness to submit to His will. At times, what we call “faith” is really a demanding spirit.

We must remember that our earthly needs will come to an end, but Jesus Christ will remain forever. If our prayers have dealt only with presenting our requests to the Lord, then we are missing a great opportunity to get to know the One with whom we are going to spend all eternity. Let’s invest time in pursuing intimacy with the great God who created us. Then we can enjoy all the benefits of that relationship forever.

How much of your communion with God is devoted to your needs — even legitimate ones? Are you spending any time getting to know the Lord? Although God delights in our prayers and tells us to pray about everything,

He also wants us to come to Him just because we enjoy being with Him.

For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteouss,

and His ears are open unto their prayers. -1 Peter 3:12a

Matthew 1:18-25

|MINISTER: |Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as His mother |

| |Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was |

| |found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being|

| |a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was |

| |minded to put her away privily. |

|CONGREGATION: |But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord|

| |appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, |

| |fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is |

| |conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. |

|MINISTER: |And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call His name |

| |JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins. Now all this |

| |was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord |

| |by the prophet, saying, |

|CONGREGATION: |Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, |

| |and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, |

| |God with us. |

|ALL: |Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord |

| |had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till |

| |she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called His name |

| |JESUS. |

Reason for the Season

Let the Joy of CHRISTmas shine through you. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven (Matthew 5:16). Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year. When growing up I always looked forward to Christmas and it wasn’t just about receiving gifts but the joy of being with family. The smell of cedar and pine, fresh fruit, my mother’s cooking, and Christmas carols. But then I got around the Christmas Killjoys who quickly said “hey did you know you’re not supposed to celebrate Christmas?” And, of course, I said “say what!” I mean they had me thinking I was going to go to Hell for celebrating Christmas. While it is true that Christmas has been greatly commercialized, and that it’s also true that non-Christians, worldly people, and even the devil go to great lengths to keep CHRIST OUT of CHRISTmas...many Christians get such a head full of knowledge, that we forget to have a heart full of joy to talk about and sing about the Good News of JESUS CHRIST, thereby keeping CHRIST IN CHRISTmas.

As followers of Christ this is a wonderful time of year to go tell the world that Christ the Savior was born. That He was born to bring Joy to the World. So, let your light shine. Let others see your Joy and Good Works during this Season.

Remember Jesus is the reason for the Season!

Yours in Christ Jesus,

Pastor Mark A. Toney

This Week in Black History

Dr. Candice Bridge…

Forensic Scientist Dr. Candice Bridge receives $324,000 Grant to

Help Investigate Sexual Assault Cases.

The ways in which rape and sexual assault cases are prosecuted in

court are severely lacking. That’s if they’re ever prosecuted at all.

There are thousands upon thousands of rape kits that go untested

because of lack of funds and, to be honest, lack of interest in

solving these cases.

But one woman is helping to change that. Candice Bridge, PhD, a professor at the University of Central Florida recently received a $324,000 grant from the National Institute of Justice to develop new forensic techniques that would help investigate sexual assault cases.

Dr. Bridge said, “This grant will enable us to conduct research into a unique new means of identifying perpetrators of sexual assault when traditional DNA evidence doesn’t exist. It’s an important line of research that has become even more important as rapists attempt to elude capture by covering their DNA tracks after an assault.”

To develop this new technique, Dr. Bridge will have access to instruments currently only available to the FBI and a limited number of forensic laboratories at the Federal and State levels. The instruments help to identify rapists by using evidence that doesn’t include DNA.

In order to receive the grant Dr. Bridge conducted preliminary research to prove to the National Institute of Justice that there is sufficient information to distinguish between lubricant samples and that a database of those distinguishing markers could benefit the community.

In addition to her work in the lab, Bridge received a contract with the Orlando Public Defender’s Office to develop a website to instruct prosecution and defense attorneys on how to analyze her forensic results. The site seeks to educate the Central Florida Court System on the limitations and possibilities of forensic science.

Candice Bridge first discovered her passion for chemistry when she was 13-years-old and pursued that passion, receiving her BS degree in chemistry at Howard University before obtaining her PhD in analytical chemistry from the University of Central Florida at 25-years-old. Dr. Bridge was one of the first to receive a forensic PhD in the country and the first, Black woman to teach chemistry at Howard University and the University of Central Florida.

The History Behind 3 Great Christmas Carols! (Carol 2.)

(By Tsh Oxenreider, written Dec 6, 2013)

1739: Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Charles Wesley originally wrote this poem to be recited on Christmas Day, but it wasn’t the version we know today. The original was ten four-line verses, and instead of singing Glory to the newborn King, the line was, Glory to the King of kings.

That line was changed by George Whitfield, a student of Wesley’s, and he was also the one who eliminated the verses we no longer sing and who made the ones we do sing longer. (The line change to newborn King from King of kings was a controversial statement at the time; the former claims that the angels praised God the Father when Jesus was born, the latter claims Jesus himself was praised. This caused a riff between the men.)

Nonetheless, this hymn remains one of the most theologically rich

carols we still sing, and music was later added

by Felix Mendelssohn.
