COURSE CONTENT:

We will be covering the following topics and options. However, the order is subject to change.

Semester 1 Semester 2

RESOURCES

Textbook used online: Biology, Ixfird UB Diploma Program (2014 edition)

Other recommended texts:

• IB Study Guide: Biology for the IB Diploma, 2014 ed by Andrew Allott

• Skills in Biology, by Biozone (purchase at )

MATERIALS NEEDED:

• 3” three ring binder for the class notebook(I know this seems large but after two years it will be completely full!)

• Dividers for the notebook( I suggest at least 10 dividers so we can have enough for the entire course)

• Composition book (for assessment statements)

• Pens (different colors are best!)

ONLINE REQUIREMENTS

Several websites will be used during this course. Students are responsible for remembering their user names and passwords so they can access and submit assignments. Students without reliable internet access at home should plan head to use the computers in the Library.

• - This is the class website that will have any notes, activities, assignments, and daily class information posted on. Please check this website frequently as there will also be announcements and other information passed along.

GRADES:

The table below shows the approximate breakdown for Semester 1 grades. These are only an approximation!!

|Grade Category |Description |Approximate portion of overall |

| | |semester grade |

|Notebook |Assessment statements, classwork, homework, informal labs, and|60% |

| |quizzes; cumulative for the course; due on test day. | |

|Tests |Given approximately every 3 weeks, Internal Investigation, |40% |

| |Major Projects | |

I highly encourage students to form study groups, trade telephone numbers and work cooperatively to learn material. However, all work must be completed in the students’ own words and tests must be completed individually. Any instance of copying, plagiarizing, or cheating will result in zero points on the assignment or test for each person involved, parent contact, and referral to administration. Any assignment submitted to that results in a 20% or greater match will not be accepted.

LABS:

Laboratory investigations are an essential part of this course. In order for labs to be learning opportunities students must be properly prepared and focused.

1. A pre-lab assignment may be required for students to participate in the lab.

2. Close toed shoes are required on lab days. Students with inappropriate shoes will not participate in that day’s lab.

3. No reckless behavior will be tolerated. Misbehavior will result in a referral and a zero for the lab.

4. Students are to report any breakage of equipment or injuries to the teacher immediately.

5. Class will not be dismissed until all equipment is accounted for and lab stations are clean and ready for the next class.

EXPECTATIONS:

All JHS rules apply in my classroom (see the student handbook). My expectations for student behavior are simple:

1. Respect Me Give me your attention when I’m speaking and let me focus on helping students learn.

2. Respect Others. Contribute to a safe and positive atmosphere in the room, free of disruption

3. Respect Yourself. Do your BEST! Nothing less! Use your time wisely and stay focused.

Violation of these rules will result in loss of points, detention, parent contact and/or referral to the office.

FOOD AND DRINKS:

I will allow snacks in class; however, they must be eaten responsibly. If an ant or trash problem develops, or if the eating or sharing of food becomes disruptive, all students will lose the privilege. Drinks that cannot be sealed (i.e. open cans, coffee cups, etc.) must be left in the sink near the door and are off limits during class. Students may have water or sealed drinks at their desks. No eating will be allowed on lab days.

ABSENCES/LATE WORK

If you miss class for any reason you must do the following:

1. Yes we did stuff in class even though we were all saddened by your absence so please don’t ask if we did anything.

2. Check the class website () and speak with Mr. Anderson before or after school to get any missing work.

Late work will be accepted per the Judson High School grading policy When you return from an absence make arrangements with me to come in before or after school as soon as possible.

JISD Advanced Academics Late Work & Grading Policy

“Judson ISD offers a variety of advanced courses designed to enhance and challenge a student’s secondary school experience. For those students who choose to enroll in advanced academic courses, the grading policy could be different. There are higher academic and curricular standards set forth by the programs endorsing the courses. These courses include, but are not limited to, Advanced Placement (AP), Pre-AP, International Baccalaureate (IB), PreDP (IB), GT, Dual Credit, and Honors. The course syllabi will outline the established grading policy for the course.”

PreDP and DP (IB) operates on a grading policy of 60% minor and a 40% major with a three day late policy. Each day that an assignment is late, the student’s assignment will be reduced by 10% of the final grade. After the third day, it will be recorded as a missing grade (M) and calculated as a zero. The student is encouraged to complete the assignment for skills acquisition and feedback purposes.
