I am Ms. Phillips, and I will be teaching the course over the next year. This is my third year at Morgan Park High School, and third year teaching this course. I earned my B.S. in Psychology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and I earned my teaching certification as well as a Masters of Education from Northwestern University. I look forward to a fun yet challenging year with a lot of math to be learned. Junior year is an important year for IB Math students, due to the ACT and IB exams. It is important to Course Description and ObjectivesThis is a one year comprehensive mathematics course. The course allows the student to develop and practice problem-solving skills using inductive and deductive reasoning. Students are guided through all the conceptual and working levels of mathematics. Mathematical topics will be integrated into a cohesive course. The course is designed to prepare the students for a rigorous academic career. In addition to mastering the course concepts listed below, students will be completing the IB Diploma Project, due December 14, 2012, and preparing for the IB Diploma Exam, which will occur in early May. Students who do not successfully complete the IB Diploma Project and Exam will not be eligible to receive the IB Diploma. The topics that we will cover this year are as follows:Topic 1: Introduction to the graphic display calculator (3 course hours)Topic 2: Numbers and Algebra (14 course hours)Topic 3: Sets, logic, and probability (20 course hours)Topic 4: Functions (24 course hours)Topic 5: Geometry and Trigonometry (20 course hours)Topic 6: Statistics (24 course hours)Topic 7: Introduction to differential calculus (15 course hours)Topic 8: Financial mathematics (10 course hours)Internal Project (20 course hours)Goals of the course:Encourage students to develop an understanding and appreciation of the topics outlined abovePrepare students for success in higher level mathematics coursesPrepare students for success on the IB Math Studies SL exams and projectIllinois State Learning Standards:STATE GOAL 1: Read with understanding and fluency.STATE GOAL 3: Write to communicate for a variety of purposes.STATE GOAL 6: Demonstrate and apply a knowledge and sense of numbers, including numeration and operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), patterns, ratios and proportions. I do not have a set of graphing calculators for student use so it is strongly recommended that you purchase your own graphing calculator (TI 83+ or TI 84+). It is in your best interest to purchase a graphing calculator this year, as you will be required to have one in your math class senior year.ExpectationsThe expectations of you in this class are the following:1. Allow everybody in this class, including yourself, to learn and allow me to do whatever it takes to facilitateyour learning. Show respect for everybody in this class, including yourself. Respecting yourself means that youare willing to put forth your best effort and not give up if things don't always go your way.2. You are expected to attend and be on time for class every day unless illness or some other legitimate reasonprevents you from doing so.Consequences: Homework and class-work that is missed due to an unexcused absence or tardy will not be allowed to be made up or turned in late. You will receive a score of 0 for all assignments missed due to unexcused absences or tardies.3. All electronic communication and entertainment devices, including pagers, cellular phones, music playersand hand held game devices are to remain turned off and put away while you are in this class. Playing games on your electronic calculator is not allowed during class time. Note to Parents: If you need to contact your son or daughter during the school day, please do so by contacting the main office.Consequences: If I see them, hear them or they cause any kind of disruption in this class I will confiscate them and turn them over to the appropriate administrator. Refusal to hand over your device at my request is punishable by a three day suspension. If you are playing games on your calculator during class time, I will confiscate your calculator. Your calculator will not be returned until I have cleared its memory.4. You are expected to keep a clean classroom. Clean up after yourself and anyone else who is too thoughtlessto heed this. See me if the mess is too overwhelming and I will gladly offer assistance.5. You are expected to remain in the classroom unless you are specifically requested by a staff member. Ireserve the right to require that you remain in the room even when you are requested unless it is a realemergency situation. In addition to the above rules you are expected to respect and follow all Morgan Park High School andChicago Public Schools rights and responsibilities. Be sure to review your student handbook for thisinformation because you will be held accountable for it.Grading PolicyGrading ScaleEvaluation Criteria90-100%A15%Assessments/Tests80-89.9%B15%Quizzes70-79.9%C10%Homework60-69.9%D15%Exam Preparation/ProjectBelow 60%F25%Class Work5%Notebook/Binder15%Quarter and Semester ExamsHomework/AssignmentsHomework will be assigned daily. Assignments will be posted in the classroom and online at mopomathphillips.. You are responsible for keeping your homework in your binder. I will check homework based on completeness—you must attempt all assigned problems in order to receive full credit. No credit will be issued for an assignment showing no work or for any item involved in cheating. It is your responsibility to check your work and to ask questions as needed. Homework turned in late will only be eligible for partial credit. As the purpose of homework is to prepare for chapter tests, no late homework will be accepted after the related chapter test has been taken. Additionally, no work may be made up due to an unexcused absence. Students are responsible for all assignments missed during an excused absence. If absent, students will be responsible for turning in any makeup work within 2 days after their return to school, provided that they have received a reinstatement from the attendance office and have submitted it to me no later than 2 days after the absence. I will not accept any letters or phone calls directly from parents as an excuse for an absence—all absences must be cleared with the attendance office. Assessment Strategy:There will be a quiz or chapter test every Friday. Exams will all be cumulative, and given in IB exam format. If a student is absent the day of a quiz or test, it is his/her responsibility to make up the quiz/test by the following Tuesday so that all assessments can be returned by the following Wednesday. Students with an unexcused absence the day of a quiz or test will receive a score of zero and will not be allowed to retake the test. Students who take the chapter test and receive a score below 70% may retake the test, but will only be able to earn up to a 70% on the retake. Students must make arrangements with the teacher if they wish to retest. Students will only be granted a retest once they have reviewed and corrected their original test.A midterm exam will be given at the end of the 1st and 3rd quarters. A comprehensive exam will be given at the end of each semester. The midterm and final exams will count for 15% of your grade and will also be used to help resolve borderline grades.Project:The IB Math Studies SL internal paper (also known as The Project) is a requirement of this course and will count for 15% of your grade in this class. Additionally, the internal paper makes up 20% of your math grade towards the IB Diploma. A completed rough draft of each student’s IB Diploma Project is due on December 3, 2012 and the final draft of the project is due December 14, 2011. Any student who does not complete a project will not be registered for the IB Math Exams. If registration has already occurred, students will be responsible for paying the registration fee. Failure to complete a project will make a student ineligible for the IB Diploma. I reserve the right to change the due dates as needed. The project is an individual piece of work involving the collection of information or the generation of measurements, and the analysis and evaluation of the information or measurements. Students are responsible for choosing a topic, formulating a plan, gathering relevant data, carrying out sophisticated math processes, interpreting and discussing results, reflecting on the mathematical validity of the project, clearly communicating and structuring the paper, and showing commitment throughout all stages of the project. As your teacher, my responsibilities towards the project include: advising students in choosing appropriate topics, providing opportunities for students to learn the skills related to the project work, encouraging and supporting students throughout the research and writing of projects, providing students with feedback on work completed at various stages of the project, and ensuring that the project is the student’s own work. Your Grade:It is your responsibility to track your progress in this class. You will be given a standards tracker as well as an IB assessment tracker so that you can see what areas you need to work on. Your final grade in this class and/or your IB grade should not be a surprise to you. You are required to keep all of your returned work in your binder, in case a discrepancy arises with your grade. I will do my best to update grades every Monday, following Friday’s weekly assessment. If you are failing the class at the semester we can discuss a remediation plan, pending a passing grade on the final exam. This will be available only at the end of a semester. You may access your grades via using the student and/or parent portal. Please see me as soon as possible if you are unsure of your username and/or password. Final Note:I am looking forward to a great year as your teacher, and I hope you are excited to be in IB Math Studies. I will do my best to help you meet all of the goals in this course, but it will take hard work and perseverance from all of us. Let’s work together to do our best this year—I promise it will pay off in the end.I have read the Syllabus and Parent Letter and I understand the goals and expectations of this IB Math Studies course._______________________________________________________________________Student’s Name (Print)Student’s Signature/Date_______________________________________________________________________Parent/Guardian’s Name (Print)Parent/Guardian Signature/DateParent’s Home/Evening phone number_________________________Parent’s Day/Work phone number_____________________________Parent’s Cell phone number__________________________________Parent’s Email Address______________________________________(Please detach and return this portion by 08/17/12) ................
