F. Summary The Tuck family inadvertently drank from a magic spring, which made them immortal. Winnie, a young dissatisfied girl, also discovered the secret. The Tucks kidnapped her because they feared she would tell the secret. After Winnie understood the negative consequences of living forever and learning to care for the Tuck family, she helped rescue Mae Tuck who had killed an evil man who wanted to exploit the magic spring water. Many years later after an electrical storm the spring is bulldozed and Jesse discovers Minnie’s grave, the Tuck family realizes the secret is safe.

G. Response . I enjoyed the book because it was impossible to put down, interesting, and filled with believable dialogue. I noticed that the characters were well developed and the reader could not predict the plot. It was filled with suspense and excitement. The book made me consider the consequences of immortality and it tested my personal conclusions. I think the book relates to my life in several ways. It reaffirmed the fact that time and what you do with your life is important. Miles Tuck discussed that it is key for all people to find a way to do something important. After fifteen years of teaching I have returned to school. This was a difficult personal decision. However I think it is important to have goals and dreams and I think the author gives the reader many opportunities to discover and examine their personal possibilities. I think this book will encourage children.

H. Teaching Ideas. I would ask the children to look at the pros and cons of living forever and debate the conclusions. I think the children could develop several interesting survey questions. Students could role-play the Tuck family and answer questions about the novel.

I. Culture or ethnic group. The book represents the culture of the small Southern town. The Tucks had remained the same for eighty-seven years at the beginning of the novel. Winnie lived from 1870-1948.

J. Genre Modern Fantasy, novel with folktale and fantasy elements

K. Awards/Honors ALA Notable Book
