"WHEN I SEE THE BLOOD”
EXODUS 12:1-28
READ AS TEXT: EXODUS 12:1-14
INTRO: Leviticus 17:11 says—“For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I
have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your
souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul." All
through the WORD OF GOD we see that the Almighty God desires a
blood sacrifice for the payment of sin. In the Old Testament, animal
sacrifices were offered on the Mercy seat by the high priest as an
offering for sin. But when Christ died, the Old Testament sacrifices
became obsolete, for He was the perfect sacrifice!
Hebrews 10:12, 14 says—“But this man, after he had offered one
sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God…For by
one offering he hath perfected forever them that are sanctified." In
Exodus 12, we see the institution by God of The Passover. This feast
of Israel would commemorate forever the redemption of God's chosen
people from bondage in Egypt. The most assuring promise given by
God in Exodus 12 is found in v13 which says—“when I see the blood,
I will pass over you..." This promise of God insured the people that if
they would appropriate and apply the blood to the door posts, then
God would pass over them!
This promise was for the people of Israel in that day, but it has far-
reaching assurances for us too. Because according to 1 Corinthians
5:7—“...For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us." Only when
the blood of Christ is applied to our hearts and lives can God say,
"When I see the blood, I will pass over you!" Then and only then do
We escape the wrath to come! Romans 8:1 says—“There is therefore
now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not
after the flesh, but after the Spirit." The Passover was a picture, a
foretaste of the glory to come, when Christ would taste death for every
man on Calvary! Let us look at the Passover together. I would have
you to notice:
(1) THE BLOOD HAD TO BE APPROPRIATED
EXODUS 12:1-6—“And the LORD spoke unto Moses and Aaron in the
land of Egypt, saying, This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you. Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for a house: And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.”
A. THE PERSONAL NATURE OF THE SACRIFICE. In these verses God gives
Moses the specifics concerning the preparation for the Passover to relay to
the people. God gave Moses specifics, such as:
• THE TYPE OF SACRIFICE—“Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats.” (v5).
• THE TIME OF THE SACRIFICE—“Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for a house.” (v3).
The observance of the Passover would include each individual family and
family member. They would eat the flesh of the lamb and then “…take of
the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of
the houses, wherein they shall eat it.” (v7). The blood would become the
personal guarantee for that household that when the death angel passed
over that house would be spared the judgment of God. I want you to note
two interesting phrases found in v3. The first “every man a lamb,” and the
second “a lamb for a house.” Both of these speak of the personal nature of
the sacrifice and the blood of the sacrifice.
I want you to notice the words in v3—“…they shall take to them every man
a lamb,” and in v5—“…ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the
goats.” We need to pay close attention to the word “take” found in those
verses. This word means “to accept, to receive.” In other words, the lamb
must be appropriated. The word "appropriated" means "taken to oneself as
one's own or to set apart for a particular use or person because of suitability"
(Funk & Wagnalls Standard Desk Dictionary. Volume 1, A-M. p. 31). The
Lord commanded in vv. 3-4—"every man a lamb” and “A lamb for an
house...". Once again this speaks of the personal nature of the sacrifice
and the blood which was needed from the sacrifice.
Turn with me to John 6:47-58. These verses tell us that Jesus is our
Passover! The eating of His flesh and drinking of His blood is spiritually by
faith. The flesh and blood of Jesus means the vicarious sacrifice of His
body on the Cross. (Oliver B. Greene. The Gospel According To John. p.
373).
It tells us in Isaiah 53:5—“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he
was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him;
and with his stripes we are healed.” All that Christ endured was personally
for YOU and I! It tells us in John l:29—“…Behold the Lamb of God, which
taketh away the sin of the world.” Christ died for the sins of ALL, but only
by faith in Him is our sins forgiven! (Romans 3:24-25; 1 Peter 1:18-19;
2:24). The blood had to be shed (Hebrews 9:22) but without faith in blood
no one can be saved (Ephesians 1:7)!
B. THE PROPITIATORY NATURE OF THE SACRIFICE. The word
propitiatory means “pertaining to or causing propitiation.” (Funk & Wagnalls
Standard Desk Dictionary. Volume 2, N-Z. p. 531). In the Bible propitiation
speaks of ATONEMENT. 1 John 2:2 tells us speaking of Christ—“And he is
the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the
whole world.” In 1 John 4:9-10 we read—“In this was manifested the love
of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the
world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God,
but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” In
no way was Jesus a martyr. He was a sacrifice. He was a propitiation. He
was an “atoning sacrifice.” (College Press NT Commentary. e-Sword. Version

ILLUS: Two young boys and their father had a traffic accident in which the
youngest boy Mike needed a blood transfusion. Mike's big brother
who was only eight years old had the same blood type as his
younger brother.
The Dad sat down and carefully tried to explain to the brother how
this blood was needed and how wonderful it would be for his little
brother. After some silence he responded by saying, "Yes, Daddy,
I'll give my blood to Mike so he will get well."
After giving a pint of blood and much to the shock of his father,
the boy said with tears in his eyes, "When did. I die Daddy?" In
amazement, the father realized that in his feeble attempt to explain
the giving of blood his son had misunderstood .
The older brother thought he would die as soon as the transfusion
was over. He thought he had given all his blood! This young man
was willing to lay down his life for his younger brother. (Pulpit &
Bible Study Helps. Volume 17, Number. p. 13).
Friends, Christ was willing to lay down His very life for us! (John 15:13).
His blood has been appropriated for us by Christ Himself! (Hebrews 9:11-
14). Why? Simply because He loves us so much! The song writer wrote:
If That Isn't Love
Words and music by Dottie Rambo
He left the splendor of heaven,
Knowing His destiny,
Was the lonely hill of Golgatha,
There to lay down His life for me.
If that isn't love;
The ocean is dry,
There's no stars in the sky,
And the sparrow can't fly.
If that isn't love;
Then heaven's a myth,
There's no feeling like this,
If that isn't love!
Even in death He remembered,
The thief hanging by His side;
There He spoke with love and compassion,
Then He took him to paradise.
If that isn't love;
The ocean is dry,
There's no stars in the sky,
And the sparrow can't fly.
If that isn't love;
Then heaven's a myth,
There's no feeling like this,
If that isn't love!
THE BLOOD HAD TO BE APPROPRIATED but also…
(2) THE BLOOD HAD TO BE APPLIED
EXODUS 12:7-11—“And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the
two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof. And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire. And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD's passover.”
A. THE EXCELLENCE OF THE BLOOD. We read in v7—“...take of the blood,
and strike it on the two side posts, and on the upper door post of the
houses...". The emphasis in the Passover was on the blood. The blood of
the lamb is the prominent theme. The message of the blood in regards to
salvation is prominent throughout the Scripture. From the curse on Cain’s
bloodless offering, to the emphasis of the blood making atonement for sin
in Israel’s offerings (Leviticus 17:11), to the warning in the New Testament
that without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins (Hebrews
9:22), to Revelation which speaks of the blood of the Lamb (Revelation
12:11), there is a continual emphasis on the blood in salvation. (John G.
Butler. Butler's Daily Bible Reading (2) Sermonettes Outlines. WORDsearch
7.0. Copyright 2007. WORDsearch Corp. All Rights Reserved). The
applying of the blood to the door posts is a fitting fore view of the Cross!
(Ephesians 2:13-18). It is in the Cross that we have our hope! (1
Corinthians 1:18, 21).
ILLUS: When God wanted to create the world, He merely spoke the word
and it happened; but when He wanted to save our souls, He had to
give His Son to die.—Pulpit Helps. (Encyclopedia of 15,000

B. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE BLOOD. Exodus 12:7 tells us—“… take of
the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of
the houses.” Now that the blood has been shed, the sacrifice given; it MUST
be applied by faith to our lives! The Bible speaking of Christ’s sacrifice for
us tells us in Romans 4:25-5:2—“ Who was delivered for our offenses, and
was raised again for our justification. Therefore being justified by faith, we
have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have
access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the
glory of God.” Friends, the shed blood, the Saviour’s sacrifice, and the
sinner’s salvation are all the because of GRACE! (Ephesians 2:8-9).
The appropriation of the blood of Christ is of little value, if it is not applied!
(Galatians 1:3-5; Ephesians 1:7; Romans 10:9-10, 13).
ILLUS: In Pennsylvania in 1829, George Wilson was sentenced to die for
robbing the mails and for murder. President Andrew Jackson
issued a Pardon for George Wilson. The Pardon was taken to him,
but he refused it. The Court had to decide whether he was
actually pardoned and could go free. The President issued the
Pardon, but George Wilson refused it. Was he pardoned or not?
Chief Justice John Marshall gave this ruling: A Pardon is a piece
of paper, the value of which depends upon the acceptance by the
person implicated. If he does not accept the Pardon, then he must
be executed even though the President has given a Pardon.
(Copied)
Christ freely left the portals of Glory, was made in the likeness of men, and
died on the Cross for ALL men (l Timothy 2:5-6), but only those who will
accept His sacrifice can be saved! The last invitation in the Bible is found
in Revelation 22:17—“And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him
that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will,
let him take the water of life freely.” Friends, the blood is effective for
“whosoever will”. No soul is excluded: Jesus died for every man; every man
may be saved; therefore let him who wills, who wishes for salvation, come
and take the water of life freely - without money or price! (Adam Clarke.

The hymn writer Augustus Toplady wrote these words: "Nothing in my
hand I bring simply to Thy Cross I Cling...". Friends, Salvation is all
because of Jesus!—HIS SHED BLOOD and HIS SACRIFICIAL LOVE.
THE BLOOD HAD TO BE APPROPRIATED, THE BLOOD HAD TO BE APPLIED, and finally…
(3) THE BLOOD APPLIED WOULD BE ACCEPTED
EXODUS 12:12-13—“For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night,
and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.”
A. THE BLOOD IS PLEASING. It tells us in vl3—“…When I see the blood, I
will pass over you...". The blood applied to the doorposts and lintel
appeased the death angel and he passed over that house. The blood
brought protection to that house. God was not looking for fame or fortune
but for the blood. It mattered not what the popularity or position of the
people were, what mattered is were they protected by the blood. Likewise in
the matter of salvation, it makes no difference what you are in this world.
What matters is whether or not your sins have been washed away by the
blood of Christ. (John G. Butler. Butler's Daily Bible Reading (2) Sermonettes
Outlines. WORDsearch 7.0. Copyright 2007. WORDsearch Corp. All Rights
Reserved).
Friends, the blood means protection and pleasure. Isaiah 53:10-11 says—
“Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou
shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong
his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. He shall
see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall
my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.”
ILLUS: In the New Testament there are 290 references to the love of God,
290 times when God had declared His love for man. But in the
same chapters and the same verses there are more than 1,300
references to the atonement, 1300 assurances that salvation can be
had through the blood of Christ. —G. Franklin Allee (Encyclopedia
of 15,000 Illustrations. WORDsearch 7.0. Copyright 2007.
WORDsearch Corp. All Rights Reserved).
B. THE BLOOD IS PERMANENT. 1 Corinthians 5:7b tells us—“… Christ our
passover is sacrificed for us.” His sacrifice never needs repeating! His one
offering is perfect and complete, and all who are linked with Him by faith
appear before God in all the value of that finished work, perfected forever,
because sanctified in Him. (H. A. Ironside. H.A. Ironside Expository
Commentary. WORDsearch 7.0. Copyright 2007. WORDsearch Corp. All
Rights Reserved).
ILLUS: The Old Testament Hebrew word that we translate atonement
means literally "to cover up." The animal sacrifices were intended
to "cover" a man's sins. In the New Testament, however; the
meaning of atoning sacrifice is conveyed by the word expiate,
which means "to put away." The blood that Jesus shed in our
behalf on the cross at Calvary does not merely cover up our sin, it
puts away our sin as though it had never been committed. --T. W.
Wilson (Bible Illustrator For Windows. Version 3.0f. Copyright

Because the blood has been applied now we are reconciled to God!
"Reconcile" means "to settle, and to make friendly" (Romans
5:10). Colossians 1:20-22 tells us—“And, having made peace through the
blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say,
whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. And you, that were
sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now
hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy
and unblamable and unreprovable in his sight.”
Reconciliation in the SCRIPTURES is closely related with the accounting
principle of reconciliation. God's righteousness through Christ is put to
our account (Imputed—Romans 4:3 says, "Abraham believed. God, and it
was counted unto him for righteousness"), thus we ARE NOW the children of
God! (Romans 5:9; 2 Corinthians 5:21).
CLOSING: The most important question facing ALL MANKIND is: "Have I
accepted Christ's blood as payment for my sins?" Acts 4:12 says,
"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name
given among men whereby we must be saved." He is the ONLY way
of salvation! Are YOU covered by His BLOOD??
As you travel along I-10 in Louisiana there is a large billboard which
catches your eye. It stands high above the city just as you start up
the Mississippi River bridge. On it is a picture of Jesus Christ
hanging on the cross of Calvary, head bowed. The caption
underneath says in bold letters, "It's Your Move!" What a powerful
thought. God has already taken the initiative in salvation. Christ
died for you. Now--it's your move! (James S. Hewett, Illustrations
Unlimited (Wheaton: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc, 1988) p. 70).
Friend, it’s your move! What we you do with Jesus? He has shed
His life’s blood to save you but will you by faith receive HIM?
