Kindergarten Konnection

Aug. 21, 2015

Dear Parents:

We have completed the first few days of school! The boys and girls are beginning to learn their way around the building and adjusting to our schedule nicely. I am looking forward to next week.

Thank you for assisting your child this week by signing your child’s planner each day. Please leave the black clip in your child’s planner. It is used as a page marker. Remember, I do not look in back packs for money envelopes, notes, or other communications. The planners are the place for all of these items.

A lot of paperwork was sent home at Back to School Night. Please complete in a timely fashion and return by Monday. This includes the following:

Elementary Student Handbook- after reading it, please sign and return the signature pages

School Health Forms-answer all of the questions

Saving Smiles and Vision Screening Programs- if interested.

Several students are missing paint shirts and/or other school supply items. Please send remaining items by Monday if you have not yet done so.

Friday Folders/Homework Folders are coming home today. Please go over the contents with your child and return it by next Wed. I keep some of their work for my files so you may not see everything your child does. Our classroom will also be a hands-on learning environment. We will be learning a lot by doing whole-group and small-group activities, games with a purpose, songs and learning centers. All studies have shown that students learn and retain at a higher percentage rate if they are taught by “doing” instead of just listening and doing worksheets. We also know that children have many learning styles, so many techniques will be used for teaching the subject areas.

Next week, we will begin our homework. One of the Kindergarten objectives is to recognize and read color “words”. We will be putting together a color word book with class pictures and the color words of course. You will find the homework assignment in the left pocket of the Friday/Homework Folder that is coming home today. Please keep this direction page for your reference at home. There will not be anything to return this week, just participate in the “color week” fun!

We began our gumball machine reward system this week. I will place a gumball in the class gumball machine every day that the whole class brings their planner signed. Students have also been earning additional gum by receiving compliments from me or other staff members and following the rules. When the machine is full, the class will share the gum and receive a class reward such as extra recess, eat in the classroom, indoor play time, or small treat. It is fun to watch the machine fill!

If you have any questions or comments, please call school at 240-2621. My e-mail is tniendick@ . I encourage you to sign up for Remind. I will be able to send reminders and pictures through this communication system. If you did not pick up the direction sheet at one of our parent meetings and would like one, please let me know. Have a great weekend! I can’t wait to see the children again on Monday. (

Sincerely,

Mrs. Niendick
