INFORMAL ASSESSMENT OF WRITTEN LANGUAGE
Assess the length of compositions
1. For intra-individual comparison, base on 3 written language samples.
2. For curriculum-based norms, establish a class or grade average:
count total words in a writing sample for every member of a class or grade
calculate the mean
calculate the standard deviation
Using this information, determine a student’s standing compared to the school norm.
Assess text structure on narrative prose based on 8 criteria:
1. Introduction of main character
2. Description of locale
3. Information about the time of the story
4. A starter event or something that precipitates the action
5. The goal formulated by the main character in reaction to the starter event
6. A planned action in an effort to achieve the goal
7. The ending result
8. A final reaction of the main character to the outcome
Assess text structure on expository prose based on 4 criteria:
1. Introductory paragraph
2. Each paragraph has a main idea and supporting details
3. Paragraphs are organized in a cohesive manner
4. Concluding paragraph
Assess percentage of correct uses compared to total opportunities
(This is suitable only for short writing samples)
1. Words spelled correctly/total words
2. Dolch words spelled correctly/total Dolch words used
3. Capital letters at the beginning of sentence/total opportunities
4. Capital letters on proper nouns/total opportunities
5. Total capital letters/total opportunities
6. End marks/total opportunities
Assess number of sentences beginning with “and” or number of “run-on” sentences.
Assess selected skills using checklist.
