Deeply Disturbed,That on average 400,000 people die in the United States from their own cigarette smoking and 50,000 non-smokers die each year from exposure to secondhand smoke,Fully alarmed,That many buildings have excessive smoking that occurs outside of doorways creating extreme secondhand smoke regions, including Rike Hall, Millet Hall, and Dunbar Library,Deeply concerned,That more attention is given to alcohol, AIDS, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides than smoking, when smoking kills more people combined,Recognizing,That over 75% of United States workplaces have smoke-free policies,Further Noting,That 28% of college smokers began to smoke regularly at or after age 19, at which point most were already in collegeAware of,The 1988-1989 University Task Force on Smoking as initiated by Student Government which led to the banning of smoking inside of all campus buildings,Taking into consideration,That over 500 Universities in the United States are smoke-free campuses including well known schools as University of Florida, Valparaiso University, University of Kentucky, Miami University, Oklahoma State University, University of Massachusetts, Indiana University, and University of Michigan.THE WRIGHT STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT GOVERNMENT,Calls Upon the Faculty Senate and the Wright State administration to prohibit smoking at Wright State University Main and Lake Campuses outside of defined smoking zones.Recommends six smoking zones to be located on Wright State campuses away from pedestrian traffic in the following locations:Main Campus: One outside of the Nutter CenterMain Campus: One in lot 20Main Campus: One along Zink Road residential communityMain Campus: Three in the academic core of campusCalls for Lake Campus Student Government to evaluate where smoking zones should be located at Lake Campus,Further Requests a committee be developed with students, faculty, staff, and enforcement agencies to establish smoking enforcement policies by evaluating other campuses with smoking zones to assess the best enforcement methods, Urges a transition process of at least one year to allow current students to become aware of this new policy and potential students to make their admissions decision based on this knowledge,Notes that this policy would apply to all students, staff, faculty, and campus visitors.Motion:___________________________________________________________________Second:___________________________________________________________________For:_______Against:________Abstention:_______President’s Approval:_________________________________________________________President’s Veto:_____________________________________________________________ ................
