Course Description: During this semester, students will utilize process skills of investigation including measuring using the metric system. They will explain that cells are organized into tissues, tissues into organs, organs into systems, and systems into organisms. They will also explain the purpose of the major organ systems in the human body. Students will also demonstrate how principles of heredity apply to inherited traits and summarize the ability of organisms to change as necessary for species survival. They will be able to classify organisms based on a six-kingdom system and a dichotomous key.

Outline of Course:

Chapters & Units:

Heredity Unit

Chapter 6: Genes and DNA

Chapter 7: The Evolution of Living Things

Classification Unit

Chapter 9: Classification

Chapter 10: Bacteria and Viruses

Chapter 11: Protists and Fungi

Ecology Unit

Chapter 18: Interactions of Living Things

Chapter 19: Cycles in Nature

Chapter 20: The Earth’s Ecosystems

Ch.21: Earths Environment

Description of Standards:

Georgia Common Core Standards for grade seven will be taught during this course.

S7CS1.Students will explore the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness and skepticism in

science and will exhibit these traits in their own efforts to understand how the world

works.

S7CS2 Students will use standard safety practice for all classroom laboratory and field investigations.

S7CS3 Students will use computation and estimation skills necessary for analyzing data and

following scientific explanations.

S7CS4 Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring and manipulating

equipment and materials in scientific activities.

S7L2 Students will describe the structure and functions of cells, tissues, organs, and organ

systems.

S7L3 Students will recognize how biological traits are passed on to successive generations.

S7L1 Students will investigate the diversity of living organisms and how they can be compared

scientifically.

S7L5 Students will examine the evolution of living organisms through inherited characteristics that promote survival of successive generations of their offspring.

MAKE-UP WORK

Make up work will not be used for students who are in school and did not complete class work or homework assignments. Make-Up work will not be given to replace assignments not completed. Make up work is only for students who are absent and missed work that was assigned. Students who are in class and do not complete assignments must have their parents notified and the conversation (deficiency, note home, agenda planner) signed by the parent. This documentation will need to be kept to assist with review of grades by the grade level administrators prior to grade posting.

CHAPEL HILL MIDDLE SCHOOL RECOVERY POLICY

• Recovery opportunities will not be extended to students who were in school and did not complete classwork or homework assignments. Recovery assignments will not be given to replace assignments not completed. Recovery assignments are only for students who were absent and missed work; or for students who earned a grade of 70% or below (80% or below for Magnet & Gifted) on an assignment.

• Each teacher will follow the school system’s weighted average for homework, class work, tests, quizzes, etc.

• Each teacher is required to provide and identify the recovery opportunity for each weighted category (homework, class work, etc.). For labs, teachers are required to provide an alternate assignment that addresses the same content standards/elements.

• If a teacher has a concern with providing recovery in a weighted grading category, they should meet with the principal.

• Each teacher will have the recovery plan listed on the website, syllabus, and deficiency.

• Students may earn up to 79 points on a recovery assignment. However, teachers may also allow students to earn more than 79 points on the recovery assignments.

• Recovery assignment opportunities are provided two weeks prior to each 4.5 week progress reporting period and report card. When the deficiencies are issued, students will have one week to submit recovery assignments approved by the teacher.

• Teachers will determine the recovery assignments available for the students in their classes based on individual student needs.

ACADEMIC PREPARATION TIME/CONTENT ENRICHMENT AND REMEDAITION

Students with no academic tasks to complete/work on must silent read.

Tutorial time: Mondays from 4:05 – 5:00 pm

Daily 8:10 – 8:40 am

Grading Breakdown:

ACADEMIC HONESTY

Receiving or giving information for an assignment is cheating and when caught in the act, students will not receive credit nor receive the opportunity to make-up assignments. Plagiarism is not acceptable: If a student takes information from the internet or any printed resources without a citation, it is considered plagiarism and will result in a reduction in grade.
