AN OVERVIEW

ChopChop is a new cooking magazine created to address the rising medical emergency of overweight and obese kids.

Our mission is simple: to make it fun for kids to learn about cooking and the foods they eat. Each issue of ChopChop is packed with nutritious, family-focused, ethnically diverse and price-sensitive recipes, as well as interesting and little-known food facts, Q&As and games.

As families share ChopChop and enjoy the pleasures of a meal prepared and shared together, they will develop positive dietary habits that will last a lifetime.

ChopChop reaches its audience by harnessing the power and authority of pediatricians to partner with children and their parents/caregivers. We have the overwhelming support of leading members of the healthcare community: “Rather than just dispensing advice, this magazine offers recipes for parents and children to make together,” says Barry S. Zuckerman, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health at Boston University School of Medicine. “When your children cook with you, they not only learn how to measure ingredients, cut and prepare foods, but they learn how and why to eat healthfully.”

ChopChop is distributed to pediatricians who will “prescribe” the magazine during well-child visits. The publication will also be distributed via children’s clubs, schools and retail outlets. Since not all children have access to pediatricians, ChopChop will also be distributed to other mentors/influencers including The Harlem Children’s Zone, The Boys and Girls Club, HIPPY USA and elementary and middle schools.

Based on the concept alone (and a sneak preview), ChopChop has been ordered in bulk by over 400 pediatricians. Additionally it has been requested for distribution by 30 percent of all freestanding children’s hospitals, including Children’s Hospital Boston, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Texas Children’s Hospital, Seattle Children’s Hospital and others.

The first issue will be 125,000 copies. By issue four, we are projecting 250,000 copies. The ultimate goal is to be monthly and to reach every household with children 6-12 in America.

Sally Sampson, Founder and President, is the James Beard Award-nominated author of 20 cookbooks and a frequent magazine contributor: Food and Wine, Bon Appétit and The Boston Globe, among others. As the mother of a child with a chronic illness and a member of The Boston Children’s Hospital Parent Advisory Board, Sally has been intimately involved with the pediatric healthcare system over 16 years.

Barry S. Zuckerman, MD, Medical Advisor. Dr. Zuckerman is Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health at Boston University School of Medicine.

Steven Slon, Editor-in-Chief, is a National Magazine Award-winning editor with 20-plus years experience. His past positions include Editor-in-Chief of AARP The Magazine, and Managing Editor of Men’s Health. He has published in Reader’s Digest, Men’s Journal, Men’s Health, Self, AARP The Magazine and many others.

Rainer Jenss, Publisher and Director of Business Development, is a 20-year veteran of the media and publishing industries and an authority on corporate and individual consumer behavior, demographic analysis, and media marketing. He was most recently Vice President and Publisher of National Geographic Kids magazine.
