SAFETY AND SECURITY

PARENTS/VOLUNTEERS

We value parents as our partners. Sunset Lakes Elementary encourages parents to volunteer. You can assist in our classrooms as an assistant, or field trip chaperones for local trips, special program workers, or general school volunteers. For the safety of all students, the District requires all new volunteers to complete a volunteer application and obtain District and principal’s approval. You must complete a new application for the 2017- 2018 school online at . Volunteers who provided service throughout the 2016-17 school year with an active status (as recorded in the STAR system), were automatically screened for Level 1 clearance for the 2017/18 school year. If you do not have a home computer, you can register in the school office. Volunteers must sign in and out every time they volunteer. All volunteers must attend a Volunteer Orientation Meeting. The school’s Volunteer Coordinator is Mayte Garcia, she will provide upcoming dates of meetings and trainings. She can be reached at 754-323-7650 for information.

Parents can assist in several ways:

• After registration is complete, volunteers must obtain their Broward County Volunteer Badge from the front office. Volunteers MUST STOP each time they enter the building to check in with the front office. They are also asked to sign out EACH TIME

• VOLUNTEERS HOURS are from 8:15 AM-2:00 PM, with the exception of PTSA board members, school store volunteers Tuesdays and Thursdays, and special event volunteers when appropriate throughout the year.

• Safety is our primary concern at Sunset Lakes Elementary School. We ask parents to support our efforts to provide a safe environment by reinforcing school rules with their children regarding behavior at school, on buses, and walking to and from school.

• Trust, confidentiality and professional ethics are expected from volunteers. Any breach of these ethics may risk the termination of the right to volunteer in our school. Volunteers may not divulge individual student’s grades, records, and abilities, which are personal and confidential information. Students have the right to confidentiality under Florida Statue 228.093 that covers: academic work completed, standardized test scores, health data, interest inventory reports, reports of serious or recurrent behavior patterns, family background information, attendance records, grades, teachers or counselor ratings and observations. Student actions, responses, progress or problems at school are not to be shared in the community with other parents or community areas including Facebook, Twitter, or any other social media.

• The classroom teacher is in charge at all times for classroom activities. Volunteers are invited guests in the classroom and are not permitted to supervise a classroom or discipline students. Classroom supervision and student discipline is the sole responsibility of the teacher and or administrators. Teacher is solely permitted to give permission to a student to leave the classroom.

• Volunteers are not permitted to roam the school and go into the teachers lounge or any other area other than the designated area approved for volunteering.

LATE PICK-UP

Dismissal at Sunset Lakes Elementary is at 2:00 p.m. According to Florida Statute, Section 1003.31(2), “a school district shall not have a legal duty to supervise students on school property other than 30 minutes before or after a school activity.” However, we highly encourage your child to be picked up on time as teachers and teacher aides are needed to plan for their next day.

The school dismissal supervision ends at 2:30 p.m. All parents of students left at school after 2:30 p.m. will need to come in to the office, sign out their child, and meet with school staff. Sunset Lakes Elementary will enforce this policy. Parents who show a pattern of late pick-up will be referred to school administration, the Guidance Counselor, the School Social Worker or Miramar Police Department.

ALL OTHER DISMISSALS

• Bus students will be dismissed to their bus out the back door.

• Walkers and bike riders will be dismissed to the walking gates.

• Teachers in grades Kindergarten and First will need to walk S.E.A Aftercare students to the cafeteria. Students in grades 2-5 attending S.E.A will walk to the cafeteria to meet their counselors.

• STAR Program Aftercare will be dismissed with the bus students to meet their counselors out back in their perspective area.

RAINY DAY DISMISSAL

The school is equipped with a weather alert system. In the event of dangerous weather such as lightning, students will not be allowed outside for dismissal. Parents with students in building 1 may enter the building and sign their child out at the classroom door. Students from Building 4 (3 story building) will be waiting for their parents in the Cafeteria. Second grade students will be housed in the Media Center. Walkers and bike riders will be allowed to call their parents for a ride home. Rainy Day Dismissal announcements will be communicated by TEXT. Make sure to join our texting feature via your mobile phone. Ask your child’s teacher for more information.

EARLY DISMISSAL

When a child is ill, a parent, guardian, or the emergency contact person must report to the school to sign the child out. The person picking up the child must have identification and be on the emergency contact information. All adults picking up children MUST be 18 years or older. At no time will a child be allowed to sign out and go home alone.

If a child must be checked out early for any other reason, the parent must come into the office to sign the child out. Repeatedly signing your child out of school early is a violation of the State of Florida attendance laws. School Board policy does not allow sign out during the last 30 minutes of school. Again, we emphasize the fact that no student is to be checked out after 1:30 P.M. The total minutes that a child is out for early dismissal will be calculated. Numerous early dismissals will require intervention.

In the event your child’s dismissal changes, you must notify the teacher in writing or through email before 11:00 a.m.. If you call the office it must be done by 1:00pm. Your child’s way home cannot be changed after this time.

AFTERCARE PROGRAM

Sunset Lakes Elementary under the supervision of Broward County Schools will operate it’s own aftercare program from 2:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. each afternoon and provide supervised homework assistance, snacks, and recreation. Fees are determined through Broward County Schools After Care office. For additional information, contact SEA Aftercare at 754-323-7693 or visit the childcare desk, between 2:30 P.M. and 6:00 P.M., located at the back entrance to the school.

ATTENDANCE

ABSENCES

Students are encouraged to be in school every day. However, it is not advised to send an ill student to school. Students may receive an excused absence for the following; illness, illness of the student’s immediate family member, death in the family, religious holiday of the student’s specific faith, required court appearance, subpoena, or doctor’s appointment. Parents must call the school attendance line at 754-323-7652 or send a note stating the reason for the absence in order for it to be excused. Absence for other reasons, or without a note from the parent will be considered unexcused. Under Broward County Policy, attendance records are turned over to the State's Attorney who will contact the parent after the third unexcused absence. Parents can access the District’s attendance policy at .

FAMILY VACATIONS

Family vacations are NOT considered excused absences. Family vacations should be planned during the times students are not in school. Loss of time in school may result in unsatisfactory school grades. Students with unexcused absences for more than 10 consecutive days will be withdrawn from school. Students with 5 or more days of accumulated unexcused absences will receive a letter from the State Attorney’s Office.

TARDINESS

Tardiness is disruptive to the learning environment and can have a negative impact on student achievement. Students should arrive to school at least ten minutes early so that they are seated in class and ready to learn by 8:00 A.M. Frequent unexcused absences or tardies will result in action taken by the school to ensure regular student attendance. State law requires parents to send students to school during the days school is in session and for the total length of the day. The number of minutes a child is tardy will be recorded. Frequent tardies may add up to one or more unexcused absence. A parent must accompany students into the main office if they are arriving after 8:30 A.M.

PERFECT ATTENDANCE AWARD

The Perfect Attendance Award will be given to those students that are enrolled prior to September 15th and attend Sunset Lakes Elementary until May 15th.

If a SBBC child arrives at Sunset Lakes Elementary mid school year, he/she will be eligible to receive the award. Students that attend school at a non Broward County School (this includes private schools) will not be eligible. In addition, a student cannot receive more than 5 tardies in a school year.

As stated in the Code of Student Conduct. A pattern of non-attendance may be established by an accumulation of tardiness, absences (excused and unexcused), and early sign outs that exceed 5 days in a marking period or 10 days in 2 marking periods. Students who have excessive tardy’s may not be eligible for perfect attendance, if the tardiness accumulates to more than a day. A day equals 360 minutes it is therefore consider a day out of instructional time (this also includes early sign out of students) and therefore a student will not be eligible for perfect attendance.

DISCIPLINE

SCHOOL-WIDE DISCIPLINE PLAN

In order to maintain a safe and orderly learning environment, Sunset Lakes Elementary upholds the Code of Student Conduct approved by the School Board of Broward County. The Student Code of Conduct can be found at . Please refer to this document whenever necessary. This plan sets clear rules, consequences and responsibilities. Parents are required to sign a form indicating that they have read and understand the Code of Student Conduct. Students are taught the rules of conduct at the beginning of the year. The conduct code is reinforced daily and reviewed quarterly.

Students who do not follow the code of conduct will receive a referral to the school administration. The Broward County School Discipline Matrix will be used to prescribe preventative interventions and/or consequences. Parents will be notified if this occurs.

CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE PLAN

Each grade level has established age appropriate classroom consequences for students who do not follow the class rules. Students and parents are notified of the class rules at the beginning of the year. Questions regarding classroom behavior should be directed to the classroom teacher.

STUDENT DRESS CODE

UNIFORMS

Uniforms are mandatory. (School Board Policy #5309) Students must wear:

Boys & Girls

o Polo-style shirt in plain red, white or navy blue. (No emblems except for the school logo)

o Dress shorts in navy blue or khaki

o Pants in navy blue or khaki

Girls:

o Plain navy blue dress shorts or skorts, skirts or jumpers. (may not be shorter than two inches above the knee)

All students must also wear the school identification badge. The identification badge is used not only for identification, but also for purchasing lunch and checking out library books. The badge will be issued during the first quarter of school. Uniforms must be clean and in good condition.

Parents may donate used uniforms in good condition by bringing them to the front office.

BACKPACKS AND PERSONAL POSSESSIONS

In order to ensure the safety of all students, no rolling backpacks or metal lunch boxes will be allowed in school. Student backpacks should fit the size of the child. Oversized backpacks filled with many items become too heavy for the child to carry. Backpacks and other personal items such as jackets should be labeled with the child’s name. No toys, radios, digital electronic watches, or electronic games are allowed at school. If students are in possession of these items, they will be confiscated and parents will be required to retrieve them from administration. The school is not responsible for lost or damaged items.

Students will NOT be required to take home more than ONE textbook at a time. Backpack items should be kept a minimum.

PARTIES

CLASSROOM CELEBRATIONS

Since maximum instructional time is necessary for student achievement, classroom parties will be limited to two per year. This will include a winter holiday celebration and an end-of-the-year celebration. Homeroom parents will assist in planning the class parties.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

Due to food allergies and/or possible schedule conflicts, the teacher must be notified in advance if cupcakes are going to bring to school.

Student may bring in store bought cupcakes only to share during the last hour of the school’s day or at lunch. Balloons, clowns, music, gifts, etc. are prohibited.

TELEPHONE USE

SCHOOL TELEPHONE

The school telephone is a business phone. Please handle all pick-up or other arrangements with your child before he/she comes to school. Please do not call the school office and ask for a message to be relayed to a student unless it is an extreme emergency. The principal or principal's secretary must approve telephone use by students.

CELLULAR TELEPHONES

Cellular telephones are allowed in school, however they must be kept off and out of sight and in a child’s book bag during school hours. Students are not permitted to use cellular telephones during school hours unless otherwise directed by a staff member. Students who choose to take the cellular telephone out of the backpack during school hours will receive a referral to the office and the parent will be called to pick up the confiscated cellular telephone from administration. The school is not responsible for loss or damage to a student cellular telephone.

MEDICATION AND ILLNESS

PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION

Medication can be administered to children during the school day. Students who are in need of medication must have a doctor’s prescription. The parent must have a Medication Authorization Form completed by the child’s doctor in order for medicine to be administered at school. The medication must be brought to school by the parent; it will not be accepted from children. All medication is stored and administered in the clinic unless otherwise indicated by the doctor. The bottle containing the medication must have the child’s name, the exact dosage, and the time it is to be given. Dosage will not be altered without written instructions from the physician.

OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATION

Over-the-counter medication is prohibited at school. This includes but is not limited to: cough drops, nasal spray, cough syrup, pain pills, etc. We cannot administer medication unless the doctor has prescribed it and a Medication Authorization Form is on file.

SCHOOL CLINIC

Sunset Lakes Elementary has an area designated as the school clinic. Students who feel ill may request to come to the clinic. They will be allowed to rest for 15 minutes and the school nurse will take their temperature. Parents will be called. Children must return to class unless the parent is picking them up. Parents must pick up children who are ill or injured. In an emergency, 911 will be called.

HEAD LICE

Due to the weather in Florida, students may get head lice. Head lice infests hair on the head, which causes itching and irritation of the scalp. Nits (eggs) are small and attached to the hair shaft near the scalp. Students with head lice will not be allowed to stay in school. Children must be treated and be free of live eggs before returning to school. When a child is known to have head lice, other children in the class will be checked for head lice to ensure that they do not spread and parents will be notified.

PINK EYE AND RINGWORM

Both Pink Eye (acute contagious conjunctivitis) and Ringworm are highly contagious conditions. Pink Eye causes itchy, irritated eyes, swollen lids, light sensitivity, excessive tearing, redness, pus or discharge. Students with evidence of Pink Eye cannot attend school until they have been diagnosed and treated by a physician.

Ringworm is a fungal disease of the scalp or skin characteristically appearing as a flat red ring-shaped sore. Any student presenting these symptoms will be sent home from school and cannot attend school until they have been diagnosed and treated by a physician.

CHILDHOOD DISEASES

Children with childhood diseases such as Chicken Pox, Measles, or Mumps cannot attend school until a physician has released them. Parents must notify the school when their child has contracted one of these diseases.

CURRICULUM

FLORIDA STANDARDS

All students will receive planned instruction that is aligned with the New Florida Standards. The standards and their benchmarks are the basis for all classroom instruction. Parents may view the standards for specific grade levels on the State website by visiting Student progress is a measure of how well a child has mastered the grade level skills.

All students are instructed in English Language Arts (reading, writing, and language arts), mathematics, science and social studies. Progress for these subjects are reported to parents via interim reports, parent/teacher conferences, and quarterly report cards. Students also participate in art, music, physical education instruction, computer science in the Media Center where students can also check out books.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Exceptional Student Education (ESE) programs include Pre-Kindergarten, Gifted Education, students with Autism, Varying Exceptionalities, and Speech and Language therapy. Educating English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs are also provided.

TEXTBOOKS AND OTHER INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL

Textbooks along with other resources are used as part of the instructional plan. Some textbooks used in class are available on-line and can be accessed by a link from our school website or through . Student must know their student ID number and birth date to access BEEP. Other textbooks can be taken home but must be returned to school daily. Students are responsible for all textbooks and library books issued to them. The student will be held financially responsible for lost or damaged textbooks and library books.

BLENDED LEARNING

Students in grades 3-5 will participate in Blended Learning. This approach combines learning and computer-based instruction. For more information, please contact your child’

HOMEWORK

School Board policy recommends homework appropriate for the age and level of the child. Homework is an opportunity for students to practice what they have learned. Parents are encouraged to check the work once the child has completed the assignment, and assist them if there is a problem. Homework will not receive a recorded grade. However, homework will be used to assist teachers in identifying student strengths as well as areas of concern. Multi-step projects that receive a grade will be completed in class. The teacher may assign a homework research project.

FIELD TRIPS

Teachers may plan field trips specifically designed to enhance the curriculum. Students are encouraged to attend the trip and will receive instruction related to the learning that occurs on the excursion. Students with unsafe behavior will not be tolerated on a trip. Students receiving multiple referrals may be removed from the trip, as this is an indicator that there may be safety concerns if the child goes on the trip. Parents are prohibited from following the bus or meeting a child at the destination.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING STUDENT PROGRESS

The State of Florida has implemented the New Florida Standards will be used as our guiding curriculum. These standards are assessed in grades 3-5 on the New Florida Standards Assessment Test. In addition to New Florida Standards Assessment, fifth grade students will participate in FCAT Science 2.0 testing at the same time of year.

PLEASE BE SURE YOUR CHILD IS IN ATTENDANCE FOR THESE VERY IMPORTANT ASSESSMENTS.

QUARTERLY TESTS AND GRADES

Quarterly assessments are administered to all students in grades K-5. The quarterly assessments plus the daily grades make up the report card grade. The quarterly report card grade is an indication of the success your child has had mastering the skills that were taught during that quarter. Parents can review all standardized assessment results during a parent/teacher conference, Virtual Counselor, and NEW this year parents with students in grades 3-12 can view grades using PINNACLE. Virtual Counselor can be accessed through our school website or .

REPORT CARDS AND CONFERENCES

The report card used at Sunset Lakes Elementary is a graded report card for students in grades 3-5 and is the standard report card used by the Broward County Public Schools. Students in grade K-2 do not receive grades, but receive report cards indicating student progress. Report cards are issued at the end of each quarter. Teacher/Parent conferences will be held at least twice a year. Conferences may be face-to-face or held on the phone.

For students in need of assistance, face-to-face parent conferences are required. Face-to-face conferences are held after school (2:00-3:00 PM) or in the morning 7:30 -7:50 AM. It is extremely important for parents to attend these conferences. Additional conferences may be requested at any time by written request.

INTERIM REPORTS

Interim progress reports are sent to students during the first and second quarters. Students not meeting criteria for promotion will receive an interim during the third and fourth quarter. Interims come out at the mid-point between each report card. These reports show a student’s progress, needs, and behavior. The intent of the report is to give parents and students an opportunity to review and make changes to progress before the report card is issued. Progress reports are to be signed and returned to school within three days. Progress reports are an excellent form of home/school communication and parents are encouraged to write comments on them.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Sunset Lakes Elementary is a school where school & community works together to provide a top quality education for children. Parents are an integral part of this formula. Step forward and get involved with one of the following organizations:

PTSA (Parent, Teacher, Student Association):

As a volunteer organization, PTSA plans and organizes fundraisers to provide additional programs and materials to enhance the students’ experience at school. PTSA also organizes volunteers to assist in programs, mentoring, and other aspects of the daily business of the school. Through the efforts of the PTSA, Sunset Lakes is able to offer after school clubs, awards programs, activities such as Field Day and Family Fun Day, as well as provide one-on-one and small group tutoring and mentoring to students.

SAC (School Advisory Council)

The SAC community, mandated by state law, is comprised of parents, teachers, administrators, community business partners and other stakeholders. The committee meets at least once a month to review student achievement, safety, school discipline and the school budget as a way to collect data and set goals for school improvement and increased student achievement.

SAF (School Advisory Forum)

The SAF represents all stakeholders at the school. The Board members generally meet monthly and provide periodic meetings for the general public. The responsibility of the SAF is to act as an advisory group to the principal. SAF committees often assist in identifying priorities and educational needs. They work with the principal to solve school-wide problems, increase community support, review the school budget, and heighten the awareness of all stakeholders. SAF is an integral part of the boundary process and other issues that may affect the entire district. The school SAF chairperson is also a voting member of the area Advisory Forum.
