THE TELEPHONE EXCHANGE IS OPEN EACH DAY FROM 8:00 A.M. TO 9:30 P.M. AFTER 9:30 P.M. TELEPHONE COMMUNICATION IS MAINTAINED BY DIALLING FROM:

A DIRECT LINE TO A DIRECT LINE OR

AN EXTENSION TO AN EXTENSION (ON CAMPUS ONLY)

1. TELEPHONES ARE CLASSIFIED AS:

(A) RESTRICTED

RESTRICTED TELEPHONES ARE THOSE RESTRICTED TO: - INTERNAL CALLS MADE BY DIALING THE FOUR DIGIT NUMBER BEGINNING WITH '2' or '3'; AND

- CALLS MADE TO THE HOSPITAL BY DIALING 7, THEN THE FOUR DIGIT NUMBER.

(B) DIRECT

CALLS ON THESE TELEPHONES ARE MADE BY DIALING ANY NUMBER WHICH IS ON THE PUBLIC EXCHANGE, AS IN THE CASE OF PRIVATE TELEPHONES.

4. BEFORE MAKING A CALL YOU SHOULD CONSULT THE DIRECTORY FOR THE TELEPHONE NUMBER OF THE PERSON YOU WISH TO CALL. IF THE PERSON'S NAME IS NOT LISTED, YOU MAY THEN DIAL '0', AND ASK THE OPERATOR FOR ASSISTANCE.

5. INTERNAL CALLS WHEN AN INTERNAL NUMBER IS REQUIRED YOU SHOULD TAKE UP THE RECEIVER, WAIT FOR THE DIAL TONE, AND THEN DIAL THE EXTENSION NUMBER REQUIRED.

6. OFF-CAMPUS CALLS - RESTRICTED TELEPHONES (a) Local Calls - Dial the Operator at '0' and provide the direct line number to be contacted. (b) Toll Calls (i) Long Distance - Dial the operator at 0 and provide the correct long distance information including the number required and the name of the caller to whom the call will be billed; (ii) International Calls - Use the same procedure as for long distance calls.

NOTES (i) All toll calls must be authorized :

(a) by heads of departments, in the case of calls made by staff from office extensions;

(b) by the relevant staff members, in the case of calls made from extensions in residences;

(c) by relevant student services personnel, in the case of calls made from halls of residence.

(ii) A student making toll calls from a hall of residence should first get permission from the Student Services Manager / Resident Advisor who will make the necessary time and charge arrangements with the switchboard Operator, giving the student's name.
