THE MILLER METHOD®

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

and

The Miller Method® (MM)

Contrasting approaches for the youngest and/or most challenged children with ASD

Day 1: Overviews of both models with a special emphasis on how their contrasting theories relate to different kinds of intervention.

Day 2: Live demonstrations. Drs. Leaf and Miller alternately work with the same two children.

Day 3: Dr. Miller and his associate, Carol Hilliard, discuss varied MM strategies, including its application in the classroom. Later, there will be a comparison of outcomes achieved by the two methods.

Course Objectives & Learning Outcomes

• Identify the similarities and differences between ABA and MM for children with ASD.

• List the different ways in which ABA and MM establish new learning with children with ASD.

• Describe the relevance of reinforcement theory for treating children with ASD.

• Explain the relevance of MM (cognitive-developmental systems theory) for treating children with ASD.

• Differentiate between ABA and MM in developing communication with nonverbal children with ASD.

• Differentiate the ABA reasoning for extinguishing aberrant behavior vs. the MM rationale for attempting to transform such behavior.

• Distinguish between ABA and the MM with regard to the development of motor planning, problem solving and tool use.

• Distinguish between ABA and the MM with regard to noncompliant behavior.

• Consider the possible relevance of “mirror neuron systems” for treatment by ABA and MM.

About Dr. Arnold Miller

Psychologist Dr. Arnold Miller visits the West Coast to share with our diverse group of professionals and families his groundbreaking cognitive-developmental systems program for children with autism. Dr. Miller – building on the work of eminent developmental psychologists Heinz Werner, Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky – created this method during 45 years of clinical practice with hundreds of children on the Autism Spectrum. Its success has been documented in his two books, various articles, and in PBS documentaries such as Edge of Awareness and Come Back Jack. Families and schools using the approach include the Crossroads School, New Jersey, the New York City Public Schools as well as schools in Israel and the Kingdom of Bahrain.

What makes the Miller Method unique?

The method builds function - like no other - from even the most aberrant behaviors a child produces. Using a variety of strategies, including elevating the child, the method teaches professionals and parents how to transform scattered or repetitive behavior into meaningful contact with the world and how to enter the object “systems” that capture the child to develop interaction and functional language. Director Rania Alkhalifa of the Alia Center in Bahrain expressed it this way in a recent Spotlight article in the Autism Spectrum Quarterly: “It is clear to me that the Miller Method® is able to move many previously unresponsive (Autistic) children toward greater awareness of themselves, their surroundings, and other people…and toward functional communication.”

About Dr. Ronald Leaf

Ronald Leaf, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist who has over thirty-five years of experience in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Dr. Leaf began his career working with Ivar Lovaas while receiving his undergraduate degree at UCLA. Subsequently, he received his doctorate under the direction of Dr. Lovaas. During his years at UCLA he served as Clinic Supervisor, Research Psychologist, Interim Director of the Autism Project and Lecturer. He was extensively involved in several research investigations, contributed to the Me Book and is a co-author of the Me Book Videotapes, a series of instructional tapes for teaching autistic children. Dr. Leaf has consulted to families, schools, day programs and residential facilities on a national and international basis. Dr. Leaf is the Executive Director of Behavior Therapy and Learning Center, a mental health agency that consults with parents, care-providers and school personnel. Dr. Leaf is a Co-Director of Autism Partnership. Dr. Leaf is the co-author of the books A Work in Progress, Time for School, and It Has to Be Said!

What makes ABA unique?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a psychological approach that has proved to be extremely effective in the treatment of a variety of issues including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Over forty years of scientific research as well as professional and state committees have concluded that ABA is considered “best practice” in the treatment of ASD. ABA is simply outstanding teaching: providing strong motivation for children, breaking skills into teachable parts, systematic instruction and focus on all aspects of the child.
