Update: HMH COVID-19 Situational Analysis

The number of HMH inpatients who tested positive for COVID-19 or are awaiting COVID-19 test results has decreased 4.8% since yesterday. This statistic includes our long-term care facilities. The volume of COVID-19 patients at our hospitals decreased 6.8%. Although our total number of COVID-19 patients is declining, yesterday we did see a slight uptick in the number of patients on ventilators.

New: Weekend COVID Communications Schedule

Since we are seeing significant COVID-19 declines, the Command Center updates will be no longer be distributed on the weekends and will be sent Monday through Friday. A summary of weekend activity will be provided on Monday's. This is aligned with the Command Center's decision to discontinue all conference calls during weekend hours. Of course, if any significant and unforeseen announcements need to be made over the weekend, communications will be sent out. Thank you!

Reminder: Antibody & Diagnostic Testing for Team Members

As announced earlier today, to continue to create a healthy and safe environment for everyone, we will expand antibody and diagnostic testing to team members and physicians. We are piloting the program today in select departments and will begin the phased rollout on Monday, May 18, 2020. As you know, people may have the virus, yet do not experience symptoms and unknowingly spread the infection to others. In addition, people that test positive for COVID-19 antibodies may be at lower risk of future infection and transmission.

Many of you have requested this testing, and we are encouraging all team members to participate in this program to help reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19. It is important to note that team members in select extended close contact areas will be automatically enrolled in this program and required to be tested due to the fact that these team members have prolonged contact with patients in areas that do not allow proper social distancing to occur. Team members in Long Term Care facilities will follow testing requirements as mandated by New Jersey Department of Health.

Testing locations will be established at all HMH acute care hospitals. Team member scheduling will be rolled out in phases based upon those who work in the areas below, with the goal of providing this opportunity to all team members by mid-June.

Phase 1: May 15 - 22 o Transplant Units Bone Marrow (Pediatrics and Adults) Abdominal Organ o Invasive Procedures Cardiac Catherization Lab Endoscopy Interventional Radiology Operating Room o Post Anesthesia Care Units

Phase 2: May 22 ? 29 o Acute Care Hospitals (any remaining area other than Phase 1)

Phase 3: May 29 ? June 5 o Ambulatory Care Centers o EMS o Home Care o Hospice o Medical Group Practices o Urgent Care Centers

Phase 4: June 5 ? June 12 o Center for Discovery & Innovation o Long Term Care Facilities o School of Medicine o Network Services o HMH Trustees

Once testing has been rolled out to all team members, HMH will offer antibody testing to independent physicians as well as volunteer first aid members, municipal firefighters and police officers within the communities we serve.

Enrollment in the testing program will be coordinated by Central Registration and the results will be shared via MyChart. Team members that do not currently have a MyChart account can create one by clicking here. Additional MyChart FAQs can be found here. Team members can call (732) 9614282 to schedule an appointment for testing. If MyChart scheduling is available, team members can also utilize this function.

It is important to note, MyChart can take up to two or three days to activate, so we encourage you to set up your account in advance so that you will be able to view test results as soon as they are available.

To help answer questions and gain further understanding of this new process, here's a link to FAQs.

We hope you will join us in our mission to help minimize the spread of COVID and related illnesses for the safety of team members, physicians, patients, and our communities, and enroll in this testing program. We remain committed to delivering high quality care, providing a positive team member experience and ensuring an environment that is safe for everyone.

New: Team Member Spotlight - Forget the Cape, This Hero Wears Scrubs

Close your eyes and picture a superhero. When asking people this question, some of the first things that come to mind for many are a cape and someone fighting crime. Well, here at Hackensack Meridian Health, we know that our heroes wear scrubs and currently, are fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. One nurse in particular fits that description perfectly.

Caitlyn Sutter, a Registered Nurse at Bayshore Medical Center raised her hand volunteering to serve in the Intensive Care Unit at Hackensack University Medical Center, the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak. She thought it would be a great learning experience saying, "Hackensack University Medical Center has a great reputation for being one of the top hospitals in NJ, so to have the opportunity to work in the ICU there was something I got very excited about."

When Caitlyn was coming to the end of her two-week volunteer placement, in the midst of the hospital's highest COVID-19 patient census, she requested to extend her stay. So what made her want to stay at a time when many others would want to run?

"I knew that every hospital across the network was having staffing difficulties but Hackensack University Medical Center had the highest number of critically ill patients to be cared for," says Caitlyn. "So at the end of my original two-week stay, I thought that they could really still use my help. I had such a great experience during the two weeks, so it really wasn't a hard decision to stay, and I'm glad I did! Everyone has been super nice and it's been awesome working with such talented and humble nurses despite the circumstances."

What's more, Caitlyn is commuting all the way from the LBI area even though she was offered to stay in a hotel. She decided to just commute because she loves going home to see her dog after work ? who could blame her?

While Caitlyn says that she, like everyone else, gets scared at times with the obvious fear of getting sick and/or getting loved ones sick, she says with this pandemic there is the added fear of running out of PPE, not being able to get into a patient's room fast enough if something was to happen, and dealing with something we know very little about. But that hasn't stopped Caitlyn or her colleagues who won't back down for anything.

"Everyone across the network has been doing an amazing job caring for their patients," says Caitlyn. "The detrimental effects of this pandemic isn't something that anyone could've seen coming but it's pretty incredible to see the collaboration of team members during these difficult times. At the end of the day, we're doing everything we can to the best of our abilities, and will continue to do so. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families dealing with the uncertainty of their loved ones prognosis and my condolences go to those families who have since lost their loved ones."

Now, close your eyes again and picture a superhero ? do Caitlyn and the rest of our HMH team members come to mind?

It was an absolute delight when everyone arrived at work to see beautiful messages of thanks chalked on the sidewalk in front of the building. It provided just the thing the team needed lately ? a recognition of all of their willingness to keep coming to work or working from home to help our patients with the necessary equipment and supplies needed at home.

Right: Keep Getting Better! Our team is working hard to ensure our patients keep getting better and we keep getting better ourselves! Bob Garrett made stops at Southern Ocean Medical Center, Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Medical Center to show his support for everyone's hard work during these challenging times. Here he is pictured with the team at Southern Ocean!

They played host to their fellow team members at the Rehabilitation Department and treated them to a bit of their culture, traditional food from the Philippines and also free giveaways in the form of Spanish inspired fans. The Spanish influence is a major part of the Filipino heritage, the Philippines having been a colony of Spain for over 300 years. They also showcased the "Bayanihan" communal spirit of unity, work and cooperation to achieve a particular goal, illustrated by the photo of "Bayan" or community working individually and together to relocate a house for a family to move in. 'Pinoy-Ak' means "I am Filipino."
