a) Initiative: Job Fairs

KWBU participated in 1 job fair during this reporting period - the Non-Profit Job Fair at Baylor University on April 9, 2008. KWBU was represented by Glenda Moss, Business Manager.

(b) Initiative: TV Work-Study with Baylor University

The station sponsors Baylor University work-study students who are paid for working up to 20 hours per week in various KWBU departments. Student Steph Schrader has worked for KWBU-TV’s production of “Inside Baylor Sports” from 9/08 - present, where she gets “hands on” experience in sports production and editing under the supervision of Senior Producer Robert Shiekh. Miss Schrader works approximately 3 hours per week.

Work-study student Brady Johnson will begin working under the supervision of KWBU-TV Production Supervisor Joani Livingston on March 18, 2009. Mr. Johnson will be able to learn the entire production process - from idea conception, to production, through post-production, to distribution, including shooting, writing and editing. Mr. Johnson will work approximately 10 hours per week.

c) Initiative: Internship program with Baylor University

KWBU TV & FM has worked with Baylor University professors as well as posting announcements on the Baylor Information Network to make students aware of the opportunities available for internships.

KWBU-TV Production has had interns working with Production Supervisor Joani Livingston during the past year. Sarah Sweeney worked approximately 20 hours per week from June 2008 through August 2008. Katy Emerson began her internship in January 2009 and will work at least through summer 2009. These students have the opportunity of learning the production process from idea conception, to production, through post-production, to distribution – including shooting, writing and editing under the supervision of Ms. Livingston and the KWBU Production staff.

KWBU-FM had one intern during the reporting period – Alison MacFarlane. Alison began her internship with KWBU-FM on 7/27/08 and is currently receiving instruction on how to create logs and other operations tasks as well as how to construct stories and computer editing. She will also be working on creating segments for KWBU’s “Dot Org” segments – short features on local area non-profit organizations. She is working under the supervision of Derek Smith, KWBU-FM News and Public Affairs Director.

(d) Initiative: Participation in events sponsored by educational institutions

On April 16, 2008, Baylor University Professor Mary Darden brought her “Writing for Media Markets” class to the KWBU-FM studios for a tour of the station and a discussion of radio in general, KWBU, NPR, writing, and various media careers/opportunities available.

On May 12, 2008 a group of young people from Speak Up, Speak Out took a tour of the KWBU-FM studio – Brodie Bashaw, KWBU-FM Station Manager discussed careers in radio – DJs, operations, engineering, etc. – and the difference between commercial and public radio.

(e) Initiative: Listing of Upper-Level Category Positions in Job Banks With Substantial Participation of Women and Minorities
