S-WB-H UNEMPLOYMENT RATE AT 6.4% IN DECEMBER

HARRISBURG (FEBRUARY 1) ? The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the Scranton--WilkesBarre--Hazleton Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) was 6.4 percent December, down one-half of a percentage point from November. The statewide unemployment rate decreased 0.3 percentage points to 5.4 percent over the month and the national rate also declined 0.3 percentage points, to 3.9 percent. The MSA's rate was 1.3 percentage points below its December 2020 level, the state's rate was down 1.7 percentage points, and the national rate fell 2.8 percentage points.

Seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs in the S-WB-H MSA rose 0.9 percent over the month (+2,200) to 253,200 in December. Over the year, jobs were up 3.1 percent (+7,600) in the MSA, while statewide jobs rose 3.6 percent.

Changes among published supersectors from November levels were mixed. Trade, transportation & utilities had the largest gain, up 1,600 jobs, while professional & business services saw the largest decline, down 1,000 jobs. Three supersectors were unchanged. Employment rose in both goods-producing and service-providing industries over the year as eight of ten supersectors experienced growth from December 2020.
