Jordan RichardsonMCOM 2320Beto O'Rourke to run for President despite the loss in TexasLUBBOCK, Texas – On Mar. 14, former Representative for Texas’s 16th Congressional district, Robert Francis O’Rourke, announced he was entering the race for the 2020 election. O'Rourke was a heavy-handed candidate in the Texas Senate race but ultimately came up short against the incumbent, Ted Cruz. His presidential run is one that is extremely questionable. “The Democratic presidential field is already full of plausible candidates who have his strengths,” reported David Byler for The Washington Post. With names like Elizabeth Warren, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Vice-President Joe Biden, it would be a tough bid and arguably a long shot for Mr. O’Rourke. The Presidential candidate was backed by big-name celebrities in his senate race. Beyoncé, LeBron James and Ellen DeGeneres were among the few who poured praise to Robert during his senate campaign. "I think with the support that he had from the celebrities [in his senate race] it makes him extremely likable to become President," Texas Tech student majoring in communication studies, Alexa Fishman, said. A new young face may be exactly what the democratic party needs. With fresh ideas and a new outlook on policies, O’Rourke has continued to prove appealing to young voters. One thing that Robert O’Rourke and former President Obama have in common is that they are exceedingly talented at connecting with voters and raising campaign funds. In the first 24 hours since announcing his presidential campaign, Robert O'Rourke raised a staggering $6.1 million from supporters.“I think that it’s impressive that he has raised that much money but I don’t know if it will help him because of what he stands for,” said, Texas Tech student and republican, Morgan Cegelski.Robert’s policies include open borders, marijuana legalization and pro-choice when it comes to the topic of abortion. With many border states counting for the majority of votes, the open border policy may be the deciding factor for O’Rourke. “I’d take down the wall,” O’Rourke told the Houston Chronicle. Mr. O'Rourke stated that the border is already secure and that further investment would be a waste of taxpayer money time.He said to the Houston Chronicle that it would push migrant to, “cross the border illegally into more dangerous and desolate territory.”O’Rourke voted with the democratic party on bills 93.8 percent of the time. In 2014, he ranked 77 out of the 204 House members for voting consistently with the democratic party. The 2020 election is on the horizon and the candidates are beginning to stack up for both the democratic and republican side. “If O’Rourke is going to win this election he is going to have to present himself in a more professional fashion than Biden and Bernie Sanders,” expressed Cegelski. Voter turnout is going to be a critical part in this election. Stay active in watching for when we post early voting locations.
