Friendship Scenarios (student copy)
Your task, working in small groups, is to produce answers that provide a solution, help or advice for the following scenarios. As a class you will then discuss your answers.
1. Sarah says I am her best friend but when her other friends are around she ignores me. She doesn’t pay any attention to me unless we are alone. How can I stop her ignoring me?
2. Jimbo and I have been best mates since kindergarten. We started Secondary school a couple of years ago and over time I have made some new friends. Unfortunately my new friends think Jimbo is a dork and often make fun of him behind his back. How can I be friends with everyone without hurting anyone’s feelings?
3. I’ve made friends with a girl who is in my maths class and we’ve been hanging out a lot. At first I didn’t mind hanging out with her so much but now im starting to think that she might have a crush on me. What do I do? How do I ask without upsetting or hurting her feelings?
4. My girlfriend and I have just broken up and I am really upset about it. I don’t think I will ever get another girlfriend and I feel really worthless. My parents didn’t want me to have a girlfriend so they don’t care. I don’t know who to talk to. I don’t ever want this to happen again.
5. I don’t know what to do. My best friend has had a huge fight with our of friends and they’ve told me they’re not her friends any more. I still want to be friends with my best friend but I also don’t want to be dropped by the group.

- Ask why are you ignoring me.
- Is it something I am doing wrong or something I said.
- Sarah might respond or say “I don’t know what your talking about”. If this is a case you might need to think about whether she deserves you as a friend.
- Should you let someone treat you this way?
2. Jimbo and I have been best mates since kindergarten. We started Secondary school a couple of years ago and over time I have made some new friends. Unfortunately my new friends think Jimbo is a dork and often make fun of him behind his back. How can I be friends with everyone without hurting anyone’s feelings?
These guys don’t sound very nice, should you be friends with them still? A hard decision might need to be made by approaching your friends and saying “if your not going to be nice to Jimbo then I’m going to stop hanging around with you”. You could approach your friends and ask them if they trust you that he is a good person and would fit in well.
3. I’ve made friends with a girl who is in my maths class and we’ve been hanging out a lot. At first I didn’t mind hanging out with her so much but now im starting to think that she might have a crush on me. What do I do? How do I ask without upsetting or hurting her feelings?
- You need to firstly identify how you feel about this girl. If you have a crush on her? If you would still want to be friends with her if she does have a crush on you?
- You can then try and show your appreciation of your friendship with her and that friendships are the most important thing to have.
- This situation may also trigger feeling for her that you didn’t know that you had.
4. My girlfriend and I have just broken up and I am really upset about it. I don’t think I will ever get another girlfriend and I feel really worthless. My parents didn’t want me to have a girlfriend so they don’t care. I don’t know who to talk to. I don’t ever want this to happen again.
- The most important thing is that you are still young and there is going to be plenty of opportunity in the future to meet new people.
- Who do you feel that you can turn to if you do not have any support from your parents?
- Students will receive a picture of a hand. They will write down the kids help line in the middle of the hand and then write down the names of 5 people that they feel they can speak to about personal issues that are occurring in their life.
5. I don’t know what to do. My best friend has had a huge fight with our of friends and they’ve told me they’re not her friends any more. I still want to be friends with my best friend but I also don’t want to be dropped by the group.
Considering she is your best friend you could try to endeavour to find out why she is being dropped by the group. If the reason is a serious one or one that doesn’t meet the groups values then you need to decide whether you feel that you should be a friend to her or not. If the reason appears to be a bad one then you should value your friendship with the other members of the group. This is a hard scenario as this occurs all the time during adolescent year.
