Fr. Chad's Corner

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

TUMULTUOUS TIMES IN OUR CITIES

The events of these weeks and the past year have turned the attention of the world to our beloved Twin Cities. News stories and parodies on Saturday Night Live have often focused on the divisions and tensions between groups. As the world watches, there is an opportunity for us to stand as a Church amid the unrest and witness to the healing presence of Jesus Christ. The apostles were uncomfortable when the Risen Christ appeared with his wounds; his wounds served as a sign of their personal sins and the sins of the whole world for which Jesus was crucified. This discomfort and tension are still palpable in the Church today, yet Jesus still says, "Peace be with you!"

Let's remember that there is more that unites us than divides us. Disagreements and hard conversations are not things to be completely avoided, because growth and healing can come from both. I am happy that part of our Fund-A-Need for this year's Spring Dinner will support a partnership with St. Peter Claver Catholic Church and School in St. Paul. This partnership can bring greater hope to our cities and our Church in the days to come. As the world watches, may they see Jesus Christ and the witness of his wounded body, the Church!

God love you!

Fr. Chad VanHoose

SUNDAY'S GOSPEL:

John 10:11-18 Jesus says that he is the good shepherd who knows his sheep.

SCRIPTURE FOCUS:

The fourth Sunday of Easter is also called Good Shepherd Sunday. In each of the three lectionary cycles, our Gospel is taken from the 10th chapter of the Gospel of John. This chapter of John's Gospel follows Jesus' healing of the man born blind and the rejection of this miracle by the Jewish leaders who question Jesus' authority to heal. Jesus responds to this challenge by calling himself the Good Shepherd. He is criticizing the leadership of the Pharisees and the other Jewish leaders. The Pharisees and other Jewish leaders are so angry that they attempt to stone and arrest Jesus (see John 10:31,39). This controversy with the religious leaders continues until Jesus' death.

In today's Gospel, Jesus describes his relationship with his followers as similar to the relationship between a good shepherd and his sheep. As a good shepherd will risk and lay down his life in order to protect his sheep, Jesus willingly sacrifices himself for the sake of his sheep. Jesus contrasts the actions of the good shepherd with the actions of the hired shepherd who abandons the sheep in the face of danger. In the verses following Jesus' teaching, we learn that the Pharisees and the other religious leaders understand that Jesus is referring to them when he describes the hired shepherds.

The concern of a good shepherd for his sheep is part of the shepherd's job. Jesus says, however, that the actions of the good shepherd are based upon the relationship that develops between the shepherd and the sheep. This is at the heart of the difference between the good shepherd and the hired shepherd. The good shepherd knows the sheep and therefore acts out of love. For the Good Shepherd, this is never simply part of a job; this love-in-action is integral to his identity.

Congrats to our First Communicants!

May you be filled with God's grace and blessings as you receive HIM in the Blessed Sacrament!

Happy Fourth Sunday of Easter!

#FirstCommunion #PengWINNERS

Last weekend, our 2nd graders received their first communion! It was a beautiful series of Masses where our children did as the Lord proclaimed in Chapter 6 of John's Gospel when He said "I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."

St. Jude's was filled with laughter and smiles (I could even tell through the masks) as pictures were taken after Mass and the children looked with pride at the candles they designed that were lit for them during Mass. As Father Chad mentioned, "the only thing better than your first communion, is your second...and third...and so on." How blessed are we to have the Lord give his body and blood

through the bread and wine! Let us not forget that every time we receive our blessed Lord in the Eucharist it is as special as our children receiving their own first communion.

Inspirational Quote of the Day: "If angels could be jealous of men, they would be

so for one reason: Holy Communion." --St. Maximilian Kolbe

Ministry Musings

Our Community

L S, D F @c.C

On my latest venture down the backroads of Iowa, my husband looked around at the deserted roads and yetto-planted fields and smiled, "We've got Iowa all to ourselves." It made me wonder if shepherds ever thought that, as they were watching their flocks by the rising sun of the morning sky. "We've got you all to ourselves." And just exactly what that means.

You see, shepherds have a ton of responsibility. They need to provide food for the journey, keep a watchful eye out for the wolves, and take care not to lose any along the way. I can see why Jesus chose this particular profession to identify with. He is the good Shepherd who provides us with food for our journey, keeps a watchful eye on us, and has those wandering souls on his mind. He has us all to Himself.

But what of us, the sheep? I lived on a farm, and although we didn't have sheep, I know animals, and I'm not too pleased with the comparison. Animals are stubborn, irrational, and picky eaters - well, let's go with `selective' for that one. They are fairly self-centered, have distinct personalities, and aren't self-sufficient. They aren't willingly obedient, either.

Well... upon reflection, I guess the analogy works. Quite well, actually.

Because sheep need a shepherd. A good Shepherd. Jesusthe-good-Shepherd. The one whose voice we hear and follow.

The one who has us all to Himself. #amen
