County Health Rankings

For the third consecutive year, the University of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation have jointly published the County Health Rankings -- -- which measure the health of every county in the United States.  The Rankings illustrate how factors such as education, income, access to healthy foods, and air quality - factors that influence health outside of the health care arena - play a major role with respect to how long and how well people live.  Congrats to Williamson County for being the healthiest county for the third in a row! CDC Obesity Epidemic video

This video explains the many factors that have contributed to the obesity epidemic, and showcases several community initiatives taking place to prevent and reduce obesity. Obesity is a national epidemic and a major contributor to some of the leading causes of death in the U.S. and Texas, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some types of cancer. We need to change our communities into places that strongly support healthy eating and active living. Some Texas obesity initiatives are highlighted in this video and recognized on a national level as potential solutions to this epidemic  View the video.

The Austin Mayor’s Fitness Council is hosting A Taste of Health: Austin Chef Showdown on May 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Mexican American Cultural Center. This is a free, family-friendly cook-off event for restaurants that have entered the Austin Mayor’s Fitness Council contest in December to create one dish that met specific health criteria.  The public voted online for their favorites and this event features the final 15 restaurants.

Come out in May to sample the foods from the 15 restaurants and see which ones are your favorites.  There will be live music, a preview screening from HBO's new series called Weight of the Nation, a kids play area, and other activities.
