Timberframe specialists:
Trillium Dell Timberworks, Knoxville, Illinois.
Tim Narkiewicz and Rick Collins will describe the work their company does. They will help you evaluate the needs of your barn and help you prioritize the repairs. What repairs can you do and what will need a professional?
Kansas Historic Resources Inventory (KHRI)
Caitlin Meives will bring the ‘how to’ of submitting new surveys or updating existing survey forms. This new and innovative system will make it possible for you to make a record of your historic property on the Kansas Historical Society data base. Caitlin will also bring us an update of the recently discovered Traditional Farmers Project of the mid-‘80s when Sen. Sam Brownback was Kansas Sec. of Agriculture.
Barn Again Twice
The Waitsman barn near DeSoto was in poor condition and slated for demolition several years ago. With the help of many volunteers, Darrel Zimmerman dismantled the barn and moved it to his farm at Kill Creek Road and K-10. Last year, a straight line wind nearly destroyed it. Queen posts were pulled out of their mortises and the building could no longer be used for the groups who came for educational farm experiences. Hear about the second resurrection of the Zimmerman barn.
Kansas Land Trust
A barn or farmhouse without acreage is just a barn or house in the country. Are you concerned about what will happen to your acreage? How can a conservation easement help to carry out your wishes? Jerry Jost of the Kansas Land Trust will share ideas about easements as well as other conservancy issues.
How Can That Old Barn Earn Its Keep
A panel of farmers will share how they are using barns to raise heritage animals. How viable are the niche markets and does the great increase in Farmers Market venues hold promise for those with old buildings and smaller acreages?
Sesquicentennial Sunflower Project
Artist William Hagman has designed a participatory art project for all attendees to take part in. Learn more details when you arrive in Barnes.
Vintage Tractors
There will be 2 collections of vintage tractors available for your enjoyment after the last session and before dinner on Friday.
The Byre and Bluff barns of Doniphan County
Andy Clements will present an overview of the 18 National Register listed barns and others in Doniphan County. This listing was accomplished in the mid-1980’s. Some barns have changed owners. Others are in need of repair. These barns will be focus this fall of a cooperative effort to educate current owners on the benefits of the listing, a demonstration of barn repair and maintenance and an actual tour in June of 2010 when the National Barn Alliance conference is held there and in Atchison on the beautiful ‘east coast’ of Kansas.
Prizes
The Kansas Historical Society publication on barns will be awarded to the first 20 to register. KU professor of geography James Shortridge wrote about the unique round barns including the 2 we will be touring. Another article is by Cathy Ambler, formerly with the State Historic Preservation Office, telling about a Pennsylvania style barn right here in Kansas.
Other barn related items will be given away during the educational sessions.
