Purpose of the Job:

Reporting to the Head of School for Mental Health Needs, develop and manage high quality provision and learning opportunities for all young people placed in the Mental Health Needs Educational Service. Liaising with a designated hub line manager, teachers and support staff and assist in all aspects of the work within the Hub to promote a healthy and supportive working environment. (Refer to Teacher Standards)

To lead and coordinate the delivery of Science across the county.

To deputise for the Head of School for Mental Health Needs, as requested, under the direction of the Executive Head of the Health Needs Education Service.

Main duties and responsibilities:

This post is subject to the current Conditions of Service for School Teachers in England and Wales and is in accordance with range of duties set out in that document relevant to the post holder’s title and salary grade

1) Relationships

1. The postholder is responsible to the Head of School and Executive Headteacher

2. The postholder will line manage designated staff at one of the six Mental Health Hubs

3. The postholder acts in consultation with professional colleagues including Headteachers from receiving schools in agreeing effective means of curriculum delivery and ensuring pupil wellbeing.

4. The postholder will liaise with Education and Young People’s Services, Families, Social Care and Health and represent the views and policies of the Health Needs Education Service to ensure that individual pupil needs are met.

2) Particular Responsibilities

1. Have accountability for leading, managing and developing the Science curriculum across the county wide service.

2. Responsible for attainment and progress in Science for all students enrolled in the service, in line with agreed targets.

3. Responsible for all attainment and progress of students in the hub, in line with agreed targets.

4. To develop and enhance the teaching practice of others so that they teach lessons that are typically good.

5. To assume an appropriate share of classroom teaching consistent with their particular responsibilities.

6. To teach groups of pupils (mixed ages and mixed ability), according to their individual educational needs.

7. To have accountability for leading, managing and developing subject/curriculum area or pupil development across curriculum.

8. To promote the use of ICT as a teaching and learning tool.

9. To monitor, record and oversee the use and storage of resources within the Hub.

10. To direct, supervise and support the work of Teaching Assistants of the Hub.

11. To maintain discipline in accordance with the Service’s behavioural policy.

12. To liaise with schools/colleges regarding provision on reintegration programmes.

13. To assist pupils in making informed choices regarding future careers or transfer to FE College

14. To attend, in-service training courses as are consistent with the responsibilities of the position.

15. To deliver or facilitate staff development programmes.

16. To act as a Performance Management Reviewer for designated members of staff and to make recommendations on pay progression to the Head of School

17. To assist the Head of School in monitoring standards of Teaching and Learning across the service

18. To contribute to and promote, without prejudice, the agreed policies of the service.

19. Co-ordination of the curriculum and timetables within the Hub.

20. Overseeing efficient lines of communication between teaching staff, Subject Coordinators and the Administrative Officer in the entry and administration of public examinations, in liaison with mainstream schools/colleges.

21. To assist in tracking and monitoring pupil progress within the Hub.

22. To assist in the quality assurance of the service as defined by the Executive Head Teacher.

3) Generic Responsibilities:

1. To create and manage a caring, supportive, purposeful and stimulating environment which is conducive to children’s learning.

2. To plan and prepare lessons in order to deliver the National Curriculum and other subjects ensuring breadth and balance in all subjects.

3. To identify clear teaching objectives and learning outcomes, with appropriate challenge and high expectations.

4. To teach lessons that are judged to be at least typically good

5. To maintain good order and discipline among the pupils, safeguarding their health and safety.

6. To organise and manage groups or individual pupils ensuring differentiation of learning needs, reflecting all abilities.

7. To plan opportunities to develop the social, moral, emotional and cultural aspects of pupils’ learning.

8. To maintain a regular system of monitoring, assessment, record-keeping and reporting of children’s progress.

9. To ensure effective use of support staff within the classroom

10. To participate in staff meetings as required.

11. To ensure that school policies are reflected in daily practice.

12. To communicate and consult with parents over all aspects of their children’s education – academic, social and emotional.

13. To liaise with outside agencies when appropriate.

14. To support the Executive Head Teacher in promoting the ethos of the service.

15. To promote the welfare of children and to support the school in safeguarding children though relevant policies and procedures.

16. To promote equality as an integral part of the role and to treat everyone with fairness and dignity.

17. To role model professional standards, as detailed in The Service Charter and Teacher Standards.

18. To recognise health and safety is a responsibility of every employee, to take reasonable care of self and others and to comply with the Service Health and Safety policy and any service-specific procedures / rules that apply to this role.

19. To support, promote and positively publicise the service.

20. To work collaboratively and supportively with all employees of the service.

An annual review of this job description and allocation of particular responsibilities will take place as part of the Performance Management Process.
