Katie Young Signs with Georgetown College

Lady Patriots Reaching Milestones

Starts Season 17-2

3-0 in District

The ACS Lady Patriots continue to reach milestones. Midway through the 40th season of Lady Patriot basketball, this year’s team not only continues to win games but rewrite the record books.

AC-S is off to a 17-2 start---their best record through 19 games since the 1983 team began 18-1. The squad opened the season with 10 consecutive wins (South Warren, Cobourg West Canada, Barren County, Edmonson County, Cumberland County, Warren East, Franklin-Simpson, Hazard, Webster County and Assumption) before losing in the semi-finals of the Republic Bank Holiday Classic. The lost came to Anderson County (77-66)---the pre-season number one ranked team in the state. An exhausted team—playing their second game of the day and fifth in four days----dropped a 74-59 decision to Simon Kenton.

In the string of wins a new record was established and a milestone reached. On December 12. Morgan Rich set a new school records for points in a game. Rich scored 45 as the Lady Patriots outlasted Edmonson County 76-62. Her 45 point performance surpassed the previous record of 42---held by Cammie Campbell since 2002. Two nights later, December 14, AC-S defeated Warren East 57-20 to record the program’s 700th win since girls basketball began in November of 1974.

After Christmas, ACS hosted the six team South Central Bank-Halton Classic. Wins over Warren East and Johnson Central set the stage for a championship game rematch with Simon Kenton. The results were different as the Lady Patriots won 57-51 over a Lady pioneer team ranked third in the state in one statewide ranking model. The championship of the SCBHC also marked the first time that ACS had won the SCBHC or the tournament’s forerunner---the Lady invitational of the South.

ACS entered 2014 with a 13-2 record but the schedule would not get any easier. On January 7, ACS defeated district rival and top 15 team Glasgow 60-46 at Patriot Gym. Three nights later, the Lady Patriots survived a stiff challenge from top-15 ranked Monroe County, 53-50. AC-S upended Portland (77-47) last Saturday and Logan County (71-44) on Tuesday. Allen County-Scottsville senior outfielder Katie Young will be playing college softball at Georgetown College. Young signed her letter-of-intent Thursday afternoon at the Allen County-Scottsville High School library.

“I love their campus and that it’s a small school,” Young said. “I love their coach. I have already met the team and they are really welcoming.”

Young is very familiar with the Lady Tiger program; her older sister, Sandy, is a sophomore on the squad. (Continued on page 3)

Patriots Losing Series of Heartbreakers

The Patriot basketball team cannot seem to the catch a break midway through the season. ACS stands 6-11 on the season but what the record doesn’t reflect is the number of close games in which the Patriots have been close to wins. Eight of AC-S’s 11 losses have been by six points or less.

The run of “close but not close enough” to victory began in December when Barren County defeated ACS 61-59 on a last second shot. Warren East edged the Patriots 69-64 and Butler County spoiled the Patriots’ Christmas with a 61-59 win December 23.

The Patriots’ luck changed immediately following Christmas. AC-S defeated Crittenden County 57-55 on a last second shot by Jake Sikes in the first round of the McLean County Holiday Classic. The following night, AC-S upset the hosts to move into the title game. Louisville Waggoner downed ACS to take the tournament title. ACS’s bad luck followed to the new year. Butler edged ACS 74-70 in the Panther Classic as did the host school January 4. Then came district play.

Glasgow and ACS went into overtime on January 7. The Scotties would win the highly contested game on a buzzer-beater, 57-54. Three nights later, Monroe County scored the final 10 points of the game to overcome a 61-57 deficit and take the win 67-61. The following night, Adair County mounted a fourth-quarter comeback to win 55-50. Tuesday, AC-S lost in double overtime to Logan County, 83-80. (Continued on page two)

Lady Patriot coach Brad Bonds was recognized on January 10 for reaching a coaching milestone. Late last season, Bonds won his 100th game as an ACS coach. Bonds joined David Young and Garry DeWitt as the Lady Patriots coaches that have won 100 or more games.

The Patriots will look to snap their losing skid in the coming days but the schedule will not be easy. AC-S has upcoming games at Glasgow, at Barren County, and at Bowling green. AC-S will also travel to Caverna and host Clinton County on January 31. Barren County, Bowling Green and Clinton County are ranked among the top five teams in the region.

In February, AC-S hosts Hart County, Metcalfe County, and Russell County. The Patriots will travel to Monroe County, Todd Central, Greenwood, Franklin-Simpson and Warren Central. The month will also iron out the very completive District 15 picture to prepare the seeds for the district tournament in late February at Glasgow.

The tough series of setbacks are overshadowing outstanding seasons for three Patriots---players who are averaging in double figures at the midway point. Junior Dyllan Harper is currently scoring about 16 points per game. Harper is also hauling down nine rebounds a night. Harper had 19 rebounds against Logan County, 15 rebounds against Russellville and Adair County and 14 against South Warren.

Junior Jake Sikes is averaging 13.3 points per game---including a season-high 26 points against Pleasure Ridge Park. Backcourt mate Jared Walden is also in double figures at 11.9 points per game. The senior scored a season and career high 30 points against Logan County and had 22 points against Monroe County.

Perhaps the biggest surprise has been the play of junior Thomas Spencer. The sharp-shooting guard is scoring 10.4 points per game but is becoming known for his three-point shooting. Four times this year, Spencer has made four three’s in a game. Spencer set a career high with a 23-point game against Cumberland County.

The coming days and weeks will bring challenges. AC-S has a return game with Glasgow at Scottie Gym Friday night (January 17) as well as match-ups with powers Bell County (January 25 at the Berea College Showcase) and Bowling Green (January 28). Bell County features a potential Miss Basketball candidate and Bowling Green is still ranked among the top 20 in the state. Barren County (January 24) and Clinton County (January 31) are also on the schedule.

February’s slate includes a critical district game at Monroe County and regular season match-ups with Hart County, Greenwood, Metcalfe County, Warren Central and Russell County.

The second half of the year begins with Rich and her teammate Savannah Gregory having outstanding seasons. Rich is averaging around 21 points and seven rebounds a game while Gregory chips in just under 13 points per game and around six rebounds.

Rich is also fast approaching the school record for most points in a career. The girls current record is held by former Lady Patriot Stacy Felchner who amassed 1,750 points. Rich has 1,650 points and, barring injury or illness, is on pace to surpass Felchner by the end of the month.

Swim Team Competes at Best of the West

Prep for Regionals

A new school record was among the highlights Saturday as the Allen County-Scottsville High School swim team participated in the Best of the West meet at Bowling Green High School. The girl's team placed 12th with 26 points and the boy's team tied for 10th with 26 points. Overall, AC-S was 12th in the event.

Lady Patriot Vanessa Durocher broke the school record in the 200-yard individual medley (IM), finishing eighth with a time of 2:34.06. She also placed sixth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:01.58.

Additional highlights of the day for the Lady Patriots were solid finishes and personal best times. The girl's 400-yard free relay team of Durocher, Chyanne Funnel, Kristine Gillenwater and Lindsey Blair placed eighth with a time of 4:38.67. Best times were achieved by Shayna Cockrill in the 200 freestyle, Gillenwater, Courtney Hall, and Rachel Marsh in the 50 free, and Hannah Salman in the 200 IM.

The boy's 200 medley relay with Chance Hill, Seth Jones, Anthony Hardin and Jesse James scored a 12th place finish with a best time of 2:18.45. Jones placed eighth in the 200 IM with a best time of 2:31.28, and was fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:11.67. Travis Moser scored 12th place points in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:17.60

The Patriot 400 free relay team of Jones, Moser, James and Wade Weisbrodt placed ninth with a best time of 4:33.02. Individual personal best times in the 50 free were achieved by James, William Anglea, Colton Lauterjung, and Jacob Green. Additional best times included Weisbrodt in the 100 freestyle, Hunter Mitchell, Lake Doss and Hayden Petty in the 100 breaststroke and Matthew Morgan in the 100 backstroke.

The team travels to the University of Louisville Saturday for the Rock the Block Sprint meet.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association has announced that Allen County-Scottsville High School will host the 2014 Fourth Region Girls Basketball tournament.

First round games will be played on Monday and Tuesday, March 3 and 4. Semifinal action will be on Friday, March 7 with the championship scheduled for Saturday, March 8.

This will mark the ninth time that ACSH has hosted the girls regional tournament. Additional regional tournament information will be forthcoming in the February issue of The Patriot Blitz.

As a result, Young knows quite a bit about her future team.

“They are really competitive,” Young added. “They also have a good team atmosphere. They have team bonding activities like we do in high school. They are a close team on and off the field. I know what to expect since Sandy plays there. I’ve been to their games and practices. I kind of know what to expect with their conditioning.”

The Georgetown Lady Tiger softball program is a NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) member and plays in the Mid-South Conference. Georgetown was 32-14 last year under veteran coach Thomas Thornton.

The opportunity to play the game she loves beyond high school is a dream come true.

“I have always wanted to play college softball and go as far as I could,” Young admitted. “I started when I was four years old at Fred Hale Park and I’m looking forward to continuing to play.”

Young developed her skills on the local diamonds as well as on travel ball teams summer-after- summer. Her hard work ethic helped her earn a spot on the AC-S squad as a freshman and she helped lead the Lady Patriots to the 2011 Kentucky High School Athletic Association state softball championship. Her grand slam in the championship game of the winner’s bracket propelled AC-S to a 9-4 win over Louisville Ballard. AC-S defeated Ballard again later in the day to cap off a 41-4-1 state title season.

“It was a difficult situation for a freshman to come in and play at the end of the season like she did,” former AC-S coach Rick Roberts recalled, “She actually batted about .210 during the state tournament but did have a significant hit or two. She became a starter for us the following year as a sophomore and had a great year, Last year, she showed great leadership and will again this year I’m sure.”

Young was a part of the Patriot fast pitch program which went 35-5 in 2012 and finished the season as the Region 4 runner-up. Last year, AC-S won the District 15 championship before being eliminated in the first round of the Region 4 tournament to finish the year 18-11. She was a 2013 All-District selection.

Softball is not Young’s only sport. She is a former member of the AC-S cross country team and currently a starting guard for the Lady Patriot basketball team.

“Katie has worked really hard to be at the place she is today,” noted coach Brad Bonds, Young’s current basketball coach and her softball coach for a time when Young was playing travel ball as a child. “Katie wears passion all over her. Her determination and the passion she wears on a daily basis makes her the person she is. For Georgetown College, immediately their softball team becomes better because of her dedication and her talent level. The Georgetown family also becomes better because of her determination, her passion, her character and her integrity.”

The outfielder for the Lady Patriots is expecting to play a similar role for Georgetown but is open to playing at whatever position is best.

“There current centerfielder is a senior so she will be graduating,” Young said. “Coach Thornton told me that I will probably be in the outfield but I know with Sandy he tested her out at every position so he may switch me around.”

Georgetown coach Thomas Thornton is thrilled to add a second member of the Young family to his roster.

“The first thing that stands out is the quality of the player and the quality of the kid,” Thornton said. “With her older sister playing for us, we already know the family. When we recruit we just don’t recruit athletic ability, we also recruit attitude. She has a good attitude. She is also an athlete that can play multiple positions. She brings vast experience having been on a state championship team. She just fits the mold of our team.”

AC-S softball coach Ernie Stafford coached Young years ago in travel ball and was an assistant coach last season with the Lady Patriots. He feels as if Georgetown is getting an outstanding young athlete.

“Katie is a gritty, hard-working young lady,” Stafford said. “She is one that makes your team better. She also makes those around her better.”

Young is the daughter of Joe and Lynn Young. Her career plans are to major in graphic design with a business marketing minor. Her future plans are to open her own business designing business cards and materials.

Young is the 26th Lady Patriot softball player to ink to play collegiate softball since 1995.
